Considering the widespread adoption of smartphones in mobile communications and the well-established resource sharing use in the networking community, we present a novel mechanism to achieve anonymity in the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM). We propose a Voice over Internet Protocol infrastructure using the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) where a smartphone registers on a SIP registrar and can start GSM conversation through another smartphone acting as a GSM gateway, by using a SIP intermediate without an extra cost. The testbed that we developed for empirical evaluation revealed no significant quality of service degradation

In the history of the English language certain developments have left significant linguistic marks on the language. As new developments and cultural forms occur, new words and styles of expression evolve with them and spread. This is true of the new linguistic style that is associated with the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) revolution in Nigeria since 2001. GSM has brought with it a variety of English that is situationally distinctive and context sensitive (Awonusi, 2004:45)

Electronic voting systems have the potential to improve traditional voting procedures by providing added convenience and flexibility to the voter. Numerous electronic voting schemes have been proposed in the past, but most of them have failed to provide voter authentication in an efficient and transparent way. On the other hand, GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) is the most widely used mobile networking standard. There are more than one billion GSM users worldwide that represent a large user potential, not just for mobile telephony, but also for other mobile applications that exploit the mature GSM infrastructure. In this paper, an electronic voting scheme using GSM mobile technology is presented. By integrating an electronic voting scheme with the GSM infrastructure, we are able to exploit existing GSM authentication mechanisms and provide enhanced voter authentication and mobility while maintaining voter privacy

Includes bibliographical references (leaves 130-131)Direction Finding (OF) is a process that involves estimating the directions of the arrival for propagating wavefronts impinging on an antenna array from arbitrary directions relative to that antenna array. By understanding how the signals captured relate to the geometry of the OF antenna, one can separate out these signals spatially, and provide their directions of arrival with some degree of certainty. GSM, the Global System for Mobile Communications is a mobile digital communications system which has rapidly gained acceptance on a global scale since the early 1990s. Because the communications standard is made use of throughout the world today, it would be desirable to investigate the feasibility of the detection and tracking of such signals as an extension for OF platforms that are used by monitoring authorities such as the police or service providers. This thesis presents and discusses the implications of detecting and tracking GSM mobile handsets. Because the thesis was commissioned by a company that already manufactures broadband surveillance equipment with a particular OF implementation, the thesis approaches the problem with their specific implementation in mind assessing its competency in detecting and tracking GSM mobile phones. To understand the nature of GSM, a simulator was developed to convey information about the structure of the datasets that would be recorded in the field, and is compared to datasets captured with the OF equipment. Conclusions are drawn from the recordings, and recommendations for future work in this field are discussed
