    mFish Alpha Pilot: Building a Roadmap for Effective Mobile Technology to Sustain Fisheries and Improve Fisher Livelihoods.

    In June 2014 at the Our Ocean Conference in Washington, DC, United States Secretary of State John Kerry announced the ambitious goal of ending overfishing by 2020. To support that goal, the Secretary's Office of Global Partnerships launched mFish, a public-private partnership to harness the power of mobile technology to improve fisher livelihoods and increase the sustainability of fisheries around the world. The US Department of State provided a grant to 50in10 to create a pilot of mFish that would allow for the identification of behaviors and incentives that might drive more fishers to adopt novel technology. In May 2015 50in10 and Future of Fish designed a pilot to evaluate how to improve adoption of a new mobile technology platform aimed at improving fisheries data capture and fisher livelihoods.     Toward Universal Broadband in Rural Alaska

    The TERRA-Southwest project is extending broadband service to 65 communities in the Bristol Bay, Bethel and Yukon-Kuskokwim regions. A stimulus project funded by a combination of grants and loans from the Rural Utilities Service (RUS), TERRA-Southwest has installed a middle-mile network using optical fiber and terrestrial microwave. Last-mile service will be through fixed wireless or interconnection with local telephone networks. The State of Alaska, through its designee Connect Alaska, also received federal stimulus funding from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) for tasks that include support for an Alaska Broadband Task Force “to both formalize a strategic broadband plan for the state of Alaska and coordinate broadband activities across relevant agencies and organizations.” Thus, a study of the impact of the TERRA project in southwest Alaska is both relevant and timely. This first phase provides baseline data on current access to and use of ICTs and Internet connectivity in rural Alaska, and some insights about perceived benefits and potential barriers to adoption of broadband. It is also intended to provide guidance to the State Broadband Task Force in determining how the extension of broadband throughout the state could contribute to education, social services, and economic activities that would enhance Alaska’s future. Results of the research could also be used proactively to develop strategies to encourage broadband adoption, and to identify applications and support needed by users with limited ICT skills.Connect Alaska.     Leading in Service Innovation: Three perspectives on service value delivery in a European context

    This paper explores the relationships between the shaping of “service value propositions” according to three dimensions: “intangible mix”, “physical support”, and “time”, and the strengthening of Innovative Capability in service organizations. After the first introductory section, we describe a series of related innovative moves experienced in the European context by leading companies. We analyze how JCDecaux addresses service recipients simultaneously as citizens and consumers, focusing especially on the Cyclocity project. With CS2 Lawyers in the UK, we envision how automation and technology adoption in professional services may lead to significant productivity improvement for the good of society. Finally, we study how SNCF in France has succeeded in implementing a permanently strengthening value proposition in public service through the recent launching of the IDTGV initiative. In these situations, the service companies have clearly addressed their market considering three different forms of interrelated, yet distinct, targets: “ultimate beneficiaries”, “paying bodies”, and entities or individuals who somehow “prescribe” the consumption of services.     Propósito: A presente investigação participa da discussão da adaptabilidade no estudo da Gestão da Cadeia de Abastecimento e relacionamentos colaborativos entre fornecedores e clientes quer externos ou internos no contexto da indústria de telefones celulares. Metodologia de investigação: Após a revisão da literatura relevante sobre as consequências do acoplamento rígido e ágil na cadeia de abastecimento elaborou-se a seguinte pergunta de investigação: como adaptar a procura na rede de abastecimento de forma a permitir utilizar os recursos disponíveis e maximizar a disponibilidade de produto nos diferentes canais de produção da indústria de telefones celulares? Recorreu-se ao método do Estudo de Caso com carácter exploratório para conduzir o presente estudo. Resultados obtidos: O estudo evidenciou com base em observações dum caso empresarial que é possível aos gestores fazerem modificações no sentido de criar adaptabilidade e desacoplar os sistemas trazendo-os de uma característica de rigidez a uma condição de flexibilidade. Limitações: A investigação em questão limitou-se a observar num unico caso os acontecimentos em questão sob a óptica qualitativa baseada na experiência do pesquisador. A utilização de um maior número de evidencias poderia contribuir para evidenciar melhor as questões intrínsecas do caso. A impossibilidade do pesquisador de revelar todos os dados empresariais por motivos de confidencialidade causou algum impacto na exemplificação do pretendido. Implicações praticas: Os resultados podem contribuir para que os gestores na área de Cadeia de Abastecimento possam encontrar referências para resolver problemas similares em suas respectivas áreas ou tão somente provocar a discussão interna dos temas abordadosPurpose – The present research participates in discussions in the adaptability on the study of Supply Chain Management and Buyer-Supplier collaborative internal or external relationships in the context of the mobile phones Industry Design/methodology/approach – After the review of the relevant literature on tight and loose coupling in Supply Chain Management, the following research questions was raised: “How to adapt the demand supply network in order to utilize the resources available and maximize product availability in different channels of the mobile phones industry?” As research methodology, it was utilized the current Thesis the Single exploratory Case Study, with explanatory characteristics Findings – The study has generated evidences that is possible for managers to modify and adapted the supply chain processes in order to bring them from a tight to a loose coupling characteristic. Research limitations/implications – The research was limited in observing the events in a single case under the qualitative aspect based in the experiences of the researcher. The utilization of a higher number of evidences could certainly have contributed in creating further insights about the case. Elements of data confidentiality and the lack of possibility of the researcher to reveal some aspects involved in the case also contributed to limit the description of certain examples of the case, which could not be made to the full extent. Practical implications – The results encourage managers to use to find references to solve similar problems in their respective areas and also can foster internal discussions on the topics referred in this stud

    An inclusive, digitally-enabled agricultural transformation could help achieve meaningful livelihood improvements for Africa’s smallholder farmers and pastoralists. It could drive greater engagement in agriculture from women and youth and create employment opportunities along the value chain. At CTA we staked a claim on this power of digitalisation to more systematically transform agriculture early on. Digitalisation, focusing on not individual ICTs but the application of these technologies to entire value chains, is a theme that cuts across all of our work. In youth entrepreneurship, we are fostering a new breed of young ICT ‘agripreneurs’. In climate-smart agriculture multiple projects provide information that can help towards building resilience for smallholder farmers. And in women empowerment we are supporting digital platforms to drive greater inclusion for women entrepreneurs in agricultural value chains

    Multi Agent Systems in Logistics: A Literature and State-of-the-art Review

    Based on a literature survey, we aim to answer our main question: “How should we plan and execute logistics in supply chains that aim to meet today’s requirements, and how can we support such planning and execution using IT?†Today’s requirements in supply chains include inter-organizational collaboration and more responsive and tailored supply to meet specific demand. Enterprise systems fall short in meeting these requirements The focus of planning and execution systems should move towards an inter-enterprise and event-driven mode. Inter-organizational systems may support planning going from supporting information exchange and henceforth enable synchronized planning within the organizations towards the capability to do network planning based on available information throughout the network. We provide a framework for planning systems, constituting a rich landscape of possible configurations, where the centralized and fully decentralized approaches are two extremes. We define and discuss agent based systems and in particular multi agent systems (MAS). We emphasize the issue of the role of MAS coordination architectures, and then explain that transportation is, next to production, an important domain in which MAS can and actually are applied. However, implementation is not widespread and some implementation issues are explored. In this manner, we conclude that planning problems in transportation have characteristics that comply with the specific capabilities of agent systems. In particular, these systems are capable to deal with inter-organizational and event-driven planning settings, hence meeting today’s requirements in supply chain planning and execution.supply chain;MAS;multi agent systems

    Revenue management for multiple product recovery options : a triangulation approach

    In recent times large numbers of end-of-use/end-of-life returns have been the result of the increasing pressure from environmental legislations, particularly the directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) in the European Union. These returns incur acquisition costs and take-back operation costs regarded as a sunk cost by many industries. Thus, returned/recovered product valuation and marketing issues become crucial factors for survival and profitability of many firms in various sectors in today’s competitive world. The research undertaken is relevant as pricing and revenue management for recovered products. Indeed, this theme is considered as a niche research and the fifth phase (prices and markets) of the evolution of closed loop supply chain research. Hence, it has been noted as one of the most critical research areas in quantitative modelling for reverse logistics and closed loop supply chain management studies. The research area is in its early stage because it can be seen that only a handful of articles have been published in peer reviewed international journals, exploring a pricing and marketing decision of recovered products. Hence, there are significant opportunities to conduct pricing and revenue management research in reverse logistics, particularly with regard to multiple recovery options.The primary objective of this research work is to formulate three pricing models by using a non-linear programming approach to determine optimal profit-maximising acquisition prices and selling prices, together with UK-based case studies in the mobile phone and computer recycling businesses. Moreover, this research aims to formulate two simulation models based on these case companies by investigating the impact of the uncertainty element in terms of return quantity and reprocessing time on firm’s profit. The triangulation approach is employed, specifically the multilevel model comprising case studies, questionnaire survey, and empirical quantitative models in order to address the principal research questions i.e. “What are optimal acquisition prices of received mobile phones and optimal selling prices of reprocessed handsets?”, “What are optimal selling prices of reprocessed computers?”, and based on the total profit, “What if the model's parameters change?”The contribution of this research covers the generation of pricing and simulation models that are suitable for the recycled mobile phone and computer sector. The literature review discovers that the research on this subject lacks considerations of multiple recovery options, return rate and demand rate as exponential functions, recovery capacity limitation, product substitution policy, the element of uncertainty in terms of return quantity and reprocessing time, and multiple time periods. Hence, this research fulfils six main research gaps in academic literature as follows. First, this study takes multiple recovery options into account. Second, return and demand rate are modelled as an exponential function. Third, pricing and simulation models cope with a limit to recovery capacity. Fourth, models with product substitution policy are investigated. Fifth, the element of uncertainty in terms of return quantity and reprocessing time is added into proposed models. Finally, this study proposes models with multiple time periods.The results from this research work support current pricing and revenue management research and most importantly, the results generated from these proposed models can enhance managers’ decision making in recovery operations and reverse logistics

    A Decision Making Framework for Reverse Logistics Network Design

    The main objective of this research is to answer the following research question “How should a company design their reverse logistics network in a more efficient or responsive way?” In this research, a conceptual framework has been developed based on several key factors for network design. Through the analysis of each key factor affecting network design decision, we have built a conceptual framework for reverse logistics network for companies to decide on whether to centralize versus decentralize their reverse logistics operations, and whether to outsource or insource some of their operations? Some existing studies are able to fit well in our proposed framework, giving us better insights to decision making in reverse logistics network design. The proposed conceptual framework is helpful for the companies or organizations to make better decisions when designing their reverse logistics operations to achieve a lean or responsive network
