Compatible finite element spaces for geophysical fluid dynamics
Compatible finite elements provide a framework for preserving important structures in equations of geophysical uid dynamics, and are becoming important in their use for building atmosphere and ocean models. We survey the application of compatible finite element spaces to geophysical uid dynamics, including the application to the nonlinear rotating shallow water equations, and the three-dimensional compressible Euler equations. We summarise analytic results about dispersion relations and conservation properties, and present new results on approximation properties in three dimensions on the sphere, and on hydrostatic balance properties
Integrable Systems and Factorization Problems
The present lectures were prepared for the Faro International Summer School
on Factorization and Integrable Systems in September 2000. They were intended
for participants with the background in Analysis and Operator Theory but
without special knowledge of Geometry and Lie Groups. In order to make the main
ideas reasonably clear, I tried to use only matrix algebras such as
and its natural subalgebras; Lie groups used are either GL(n)
and its subgroups, or loop groups consisting of matrix-valued functions on the
circle (possibly admitting an extension to parts of the Riemann sphere). I hope
this makes the environment sufficiently easy to live in for an analyst. The
main goal is to explain how the factorization problems (typically, the matrix
Riemann problem) generate the entire small world of Integrable Systems along
with the geometry of the phase space, Hamiltonian structure, Lax
representations, integrals of motion and explicit solutions. The key tool will
be the \emph{% classical r-matrix} (an object whose other guise is the
well-known Hilbert transform). I do not give technical details, unless they may
be exposed in a few lines; on the other hand, all motivations are given in full
scale whenever possible.Comment: LaTeX 2.09, 69 pages. Introductory lectures on Integrable systems,

Algebraic Topology
The chapter provides an introduction to the basic concepts of Algebraic
Topology with an emphasis on motivation from applications in the physical
sciences. It finishes with a brief review of computational work in algebraic
topology, including persistent homology.Comment: This manuscript will be published as Chapter 5 in Wiley's textbook

Entropy of random coverings and 4D quantum gravity
We discuss the counting of minimal geodesic ball coverings of -dimensional
riemannian manifolds of bounded geometry, fixed Euler characteristic and
Reidemeister torsion in a given representation of the fundamental group. This
counting bears relevance to the analysis of the continuum limit of discrete
models of quantum gravity. We establish the conditions under which the number
of coverings grows exponentially with the volume, thus allowing for the search
of a continuum limit of the corresponding discretized models. The resulting
entropy estimates depend on representations of the fundamental group of the
manifold through the corresponding Reidemeister torsion. We discuss the sum
over inequivalent representations both in the two-dimensional and in the
four-dimensional case. Explicit entropy functions as well as significant bounds
on the associated critical exponents are obtained in both cases.Comment: 54 pages, latex, no figure
