Behavioral synthesis from VHDL using structured modeling
This dissertation describes work in behavioral synthesis involving the development of a VHDL Synthesis System VSS which accepts a VHDL behavioral input specification and performs technology independent synthesis to generate a circuit netlist of generic components. The VHDL language is used for input and output descriptions. An intermediate representation which incorporates signal typing and component attributes simplifies compilation and facilitates design optimization.A Structured Modeling methodology has been developed to suggest standard VHDL modeling practices for synthesis. Structured modeling provides recommendations for the use of available VHDL description styles so that optimal designs will be synthesized.A design composed of generic components is synthesized from the input description through a process of Graph Compilation, Graph Criticism, and Design Compilation. Experiments were performed to demonstrate the effects of different modeling styles on the quality of the design produced by VSS. Several alternative VHDL models were examined for each benchmark, illustrating the improvements in design quality achieved when Structured Modeling guidelines were followed

Layout-driven allocation for high level synthesis
We propose a hypergraph model and a new algorithm for hardware allocation. The use of a hypergraph model facilitates the identification of sharable resources and the calculation of interconnect costs. Using the hyper graph model, the algorithm performs interconnect optimization by taking into account interdependent relationships between three allocation subtasks: register, operation, and interconnect allocations simultaneously. Previous algorithms considered these three tasks serially. Another novel contribution of our algorithm is the exploration of design space by trading off storage units and interconnects. We also demonstrate that traditional cost functions using the number of registers and the number of mux-inputs can not guarantee the minimal area. To rectify the problem, we introduce a new layout area cost function and compare it to the traditional cost functions. Our experiments show that our algorithm is superior to previously published algorithms under traditional cost functions

VSS : a VHDL synthesis system
This report describes a register transfer synthesis system that allows a designer to interact with the design process. The designer can modify the compiled design by changing the input description, selecting optimization and mapping strategies, or graphically changing the generated design schematic. The VHDL language is used for input and output descriptions. An intermediate representation which incorporates signal typing and component attributes simplifies compilation and facilitates design optimization. The compilation process consists of two phases. First, a design composed of generic components is synthesized from the input description. Second, this design is translated into components from a particular library by a mapper and optimized by a logic optimizer. Redesign to new technologies can be accomplished by changing only the component library

A survey of behavioral-level partitioning systems
Many approaches have been developed to partition a system's behavioral description before a structural implementation is synthesized. We highlight the foundations and motivations for behavioral partitioning. We survey behavioral partitioning approaches, discussing abstraction levels, goals, major steps, and key assumptions in each

EXTEND-L : an input language for extensible register transfer compilation
This report discusses the model and input language for EXTEND, a synthesis system that permits extensible register transfer synthesis. EXTEND-L fills the need for a language that bridges the gap between existing behavioral input descriptions, which are too abstract, and structural schematics, which cannot capture the high-level behavior. The report first discusses previous work in behavioral synthesis and summarizes the deficiencies of these behavioral specifications. The report then describes the proposed langauge in detail, and concludes with a few examples that show its utility

Constant-time cost evaluation for behavioral partitioning
Given a system behavioral specification, partitioning can be used to distribute among chips the processes, procedures, and storage elements that comprise the specification. We introduce a technique for constant-time recomputation of pin, area, and execution-time estimates for a behavioral partitioning move. The technique permits fast, accurate estimations of a large number of partitionings, thus enabling better results than approaches which attain tractable computation time by using gross estimates or less thorough partitioning algorithms. The key to our technique is the isolation and extraction before partitioning of the basic design attributes needed for estimation, and the updating of this information in constant-time for each move. The estimation models are almost as detailed as those presented in previous estimation approaches not intended for constant-time update. The results we provide indicate the speed and practicality of our estimation approach in conjunction with sophisticated partitioning algorithms

Chippe : a system for constraint driven behavioral synthesis
This report describes the Chippe system, gives some background previous work and describes several sample design runs of the system. Also presented are the sources of the design tradeoffs used by Chippe, and overview of the internal design model, and experiences using the system
A Design Methodology for Space-Time Adapter
This paper presents a solution to efficiently explore the design space of
communication adapters. In most digital signal processing (DSP) applications,
the overall architecture of the system is significantly affected by
communication architecture, so the designers need specifically optimized
adapters. By explicitly modeling these communications within an effective
graph-theoretic model and analysis framework, we automatically generate an
optimized architecture, named Space-Time AdapteR (STAR). Our design flow inputs
a C description of Input/Output data scheduling, and user requirements
(throughput, latency, parallelism...), and formalizes communication constraints
through a Resource Constraints Graph (RCG). The RCG properties enable an
efficient architecture space exploration in order to synthesize a STAR
component. The proposed approach has been tested to design an industrial data
mixing block example: an Ultra-Wideband interleaver.Comment: ISBN : 978-1-59593-606-
