    Efficient audio signal processing for embedded systems

    We investigated two design strategies that would allow us to efficiently process audio signals on embedded systems such as mobile phones and portable electronics. In the first strategy, we exploit properties of the human auditory system to process audio signals. We designed a sound enhancement algorithm to make piezoelectric loudspeakers sound "richer" and "fuller," using a combination of bass extension and dynamic range compression. We also developed an audio energy reduction algorithm for loudspeaker power management by suppressing signal energy below the masking threshold. In the second strategy, we use low-power analog circuits to process the signal before digitizing it. We designed an analog front-end for sound detection and implemented it on a field programmable analog array (FPAA). The sound classifier front-end can be used in a wide range of applications because programmable floating-gate transistors are employed to store classifier weights. Moreover, we incorporated a feature selection algorithm to simplify the analog front-end. A machine learning algorithm AdaBoost is used to select the most relevant features for a particular sound detection application.     Real time end-to-end glass break detection system using LSTM deep recurrent neural network

    Presently, glass windows in commercial and residential buildings are very popular. While glass has its benefits, it is also disposed to security risks. Almost all glass break detectors use a pre-determined frequency of breaking glass sound and vibration threshold signals of a pane to determine whether or not breakage has occurred. However, sounds such as thunder sounds, shouting, gunshot, hitting objects are similar in frequency and threshold value to glass breaking sounds events, and may consequently cause false positives in detection in the alarm system. The aim of this paper is to propose a new design for a glass break detection system using LSTM deep recurrent neural networks in an end to-end approach to reduce false positive alarm of state of the art glass break detectors. We utilized raw wave audio data to detect a glass break detection event in End-to-End learning approach. The key benefit of End-to-End learning is avoiding the need of hand-crafted audio features. To address the issue of a vanishing gradient and exploding gradient problem in conventional recurrent neural networks, this paper proposed deep long short term memory (LSTM) recurrent neural network to handle the sequence of the input audio data. As a real time detection result, the proposed glass break detection approach has a clear advantage over the conventional glass break detection system, as it yields significantly higher precision accuracy (99.999988 %) and suffers less from environmental noise that might cause a false alarm

These projects were selected competitively from among proposals submitted to NASA in response to the 1991 SBIR Program Solicitation. The basic document consists of edited, non-proprietary abstracts of the winning proposals submitted by small businesses. The abstracts are presented under the 15 technical topics within which Phase 1 proposals were solicited. Each project was assigned a sequential identifying number from 001 to 301, in order of its appearance in the body of the report. Appendixes to provide additional information about the SBIR program and permit cross-reference of the 1991 Phase 1 projects by company name, location by state, principal investigator, NASA Field Center responsible for management of each project, and NASA contract number are included

    Floating-Gate Design and Linearization for Reconfigurable Analog Signal Processing

    Analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits have found a place in modern electronics design as a viable alternative to digital pre-processing. With metrics that boast high accuracy and low power consumption, analog pre-processing has opened the door to low-power state-monitoring systems when it is utilized in place of a power-hungry digital signal-processing stage. However, the complicated design process required by analog and mixed-signal systems has been a barrier to broader applications. The implementation of floating-gate transistors has begun to pave the way for a more reasonable approach to analog design. Floating-gate technology has widespread use in the digital domain. Analog and mixed-signal use of floating-gate transistors has only become a rising field of study in recent years. Analog floating gates allow for low-power implementation of mixed-signal systems, such as the field-programmable analog array, while simultaneously opening the door to complex signal-processing techniques. The field-programmable analog array, which leverages floating-gate technologies, is demonstrated as a reliable replacement to signal-processing tasks previously only solved by custom design. Living in an analog world demands the constant use and refinement of analog signal processing for the purpose of interfacing with digital systems. This work offers a comprehensive look at utilizing floating-gate transistors as the core element for analog signal-processing tasks. This work demonstrates the floating gate\u27s merit in large reconfigurable array-driven systems and in smaller-scale implementations, such as linearization techniques for oscillators and analog-to-digital converters. A study on analog floating-gate reliability is complemented with a temperature compensation scheme for implementing these systems in ever-changing, realistic environments

    A Silent-Speech Interface using Electro-Optical Stomatography

Viele potenzielle Nutzer werden jedoch ausgeschlossen: Nämlich alle Sprecher, die nur schwer oder sogar gar nicht Sprache produzieren können. Silent-Speech Interfaces bieten einen Weg, mit Maschinen durch ein bequemes sprachgesteuertes Interface zu kommunizieren ohne dafür akustische Sprache zu benötigen. Sie können außerdem prinzipiell eine Ersatzstimme stellen, indem sie die intendierten Äußerungen, die der Nutzer nur still artikuliert, künstlich synthetisieren. Diese Dissertation stellt ein neues Silent-Speech Interface vor, das auf einem neu entwickelten Messsystem namens Elektro-Optischer Stomatografie und einem neuartigen parametrischen Vokaltraktmodell basiert, das die Echtzeitsynthese von Sprache basierend auf den gemessenen Daten ermöglicht. Mit der Hardware wurden Studien zur Einzelworterkennung durchgeführt, die den Stand der Technik in der intra- und inter-individuellen Genauigkeit erreichten und übertrafen. Darüber hinaus wurde eine Studie abgeschlossen, in der die Hardware zur Steuerung des Vokaltraktmodells in einer direkten Artikulation-zu-Sprache-Synthese verwendet wurde. Während die Verständlichkeit der Synthese von Vokalen sehr hoch eingeschätzt wurde, ist die Verständlichkeit von Konsonanten und kontinuierlicher Sprache sehr schlecht. Many potential users are, however, excluded: Namely, all speakers who cannot easily or even at all produce speech. Silent-Speech Interfaces offer a way to communicate with a machine by a convenient speech recognition interface without the need for acoustic speech. They also can potentially provide a full replacement voice by synthesizing the intended utterances that are only silently articulated by the user. To that end, the speech movements need to be captured and mapped to either text or acoustic speech. This dissertation proposes a new Silent-Speech Interface based on a newly developed measurement technology called Electro-Optical Stomatography and a novel parametric vocal tract model to facilitate real-time speech synthesis based on the measured data. The hardware was used to conduct command word recognition studies reaching state-of-the-art intra- and inter-individual performance. Furthermore, a study on using the hardware to control the vocal tract model in a direct articulation-to-speech synthesis loop was also completed. While the intelligibility of synthesized vowels was high, the intelligibility of consonants and connected speech was quite poor.     PROCESS AWARE ANALOG-CENTRIC SINGLE LEAD ECG ACQUISITION AND CLASSIFICATION CMOS FRONTEND

    The primary objective of this research work is the development of a low power single-lead ECG analog front-end (AFE) architecture which includes acquisition, digitization, process aware efficient gain and frequency control mechanism and a low complexity classifier for the detecting asystole, extreme bardycardia and tachycardia. Recent research on ECG recording systems focuses on the design of a compact single-lead wearable/portable devices with ultra-low-power consumption and in-built hardware for diagnosis and prognosis. Since, the amplitude of the ECG signal varies from hundreds of µV to a few mV, and has a bandwidth of DC to 250 Hz, conventional front-ends use an instrument amplifier followed by a programmable gain amplifier (PGA) to amplify the input ECG signal appropriately. This work presents an mixed signal ECG fronted with an ultra-low power two-stage capacitive-coupled signal conditioning circuit (or an AFE), providing programmable amplification along with tunable 2nd order high pass and lowpass filter characteristics. In the contemporary state-of-the-art ECG recording systems, the gain of the amplifier is controlled by external digital control pins which are in turn dynamically controlled through a DSP. Therefore, an efficient automatic gain control mechanism with minimal area overhead and consuming power in the order of nano watts only. The AGC turns the subsequent ADC on only after output of the PGA (or input of the ADC) reaches a level for which the ADC achieves maximum signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR), hence saving considerable startup power and avoiding the use of DSP. Further, in any practical filter design, the low pass cut-off frequency is prone to deviate from its nominal value across process and temperature variations. Therefore, post-fabrication calibration is essential, before the signal is fed to an ADC, to minimize this deviation, prevent signal degradation due to aliasing of higher frequencies into the bandwidth for classification of ECG signals, to switch to low resolution processing, hence saving power and enhances battery lifetime. Another short-coming noticed in the literature published so far is that the classification algorithm is implemented in digital domain, which turns out to be a power hungry approach. Moreover, Although analog domain implementations of QRS complexes detection schemes have been reported, they employ an external micro-controller to determine the threshold voltage. In this regard, finally a power-efficient low complexity CMOS fully analog classifier architecture and a heart rate estimator is added to the above scheme. It reduces the overall system power consumption by reducing the computational burden on the DSP. The complete proposed scheme consists of (i) an ultra-low power QRS complex detection circuit using an autonomous dynamic threshold voltage, hence discarding the need of any external microcontroller/DSP and calibration (ii) a power efficient analog classifier for the detection of three critical alarm types viz. asystole, extreme bradycardia and tachycardia. Additionally, a heart rate estimator that provides the number of QRS complexes within a period of one minute for cardiac rhythm (CR) and heart rate variability (HRV) analysis. The complete proposed architecture is implemented in UMC 0.18 µm CMOS technology with 1.8 V supply. The functionality of each of the individual blocks are successfully validated using postextraction process corner simulations and through real ECG test signals taken from the PhysioNet database.
