DISCOURSE-DRIVEN MEANING CONSTRUCTION IN NEOSEMANTIC NOUN-TO-VERB CONVERSIONS [MEANING CONSTRUCTION IN NOUN-TO-VERB CONVERSIONS]

Neosemantic noun-to-verb conversions such as beer → to beer, door → to door, pink → to pink, etc., constitute a particularly interesting field of study for Cognitive Linguistics in that they call for a discourse-guided and context-based analysis of meaning construction. The present article takes a closer look at the cognitive motivation for the conversion process involved in the noun-verb alterations with a view to explaining the semantics of some conversion formations in relation to the user-centred discourse context. The analysis developed in this article draws from the combined insights of Fauconnier and Turner’s (2002) Conceptual Integration Theory and Langacker’s (2005, 2008) Current Discourse Space

Are Aquinas and Whitehead Metaphorical and Analogical All the Way Down?

    Get PDF
The paper argues from the perspective of a significant strand of interpretation of Aquinas and from insights in cognitive linguistics that a fruitful dialogue between Whitehead and Thomism needs to take into account that metaphysics and talk about God are metaphorical and analogical all the way down. Cognitive linguistics provides an explanatory scheme for explaining how Aquinas’s tectonic use of analogy shifts the ground of our conventional fields of meanings to create space to conceptualize what otherwise would be beyond grasp and to make inferences possible that otherwise would be unthinkable. The essay concludes with a question, admittedly from a particular trajectory of Thomism and cognitive linguistics, about whether Whitehead’s conception of God adequately accounts for the radically metaphorical “imaginative leap” entailed in the Christian conception of God

The paper examines the use of creative figurative language in American political discourse. In particular, the paper focuses on the use of the expression to play the race card and the creative figurative language motivated by the use of this expression in the contemporary American political discourse. The aim of this paper is to show that conventional metaphors can be creatively stretched through conceptual blending, producing instances of creative figurative language which contributes to achieving different discourse goals and discourse coherence. Specifically, applying conceptual integration theory, the paper analyzes innovative conceptual blends, motivated by the conventional CARD GAME metaphor, which are used to achieve different discourse goals. In addition, such creative metaphorical blends also provide discourse coherence at the intertextual level.

A marriage of convenience or an amicable divorce: Metaphorical blends in the debates on Brexit

The paper investigates the interaction of conceptual blending and conceptual metaphor in producing figurative creativity in discourse. The phenomenon of figurative creativity is defined by Kövecses (2005) as creativity arising through the cognitive mechanisms of metonymy, metaphor, and blending. Specifically, the paper examines the use of creative figurative language in the British public discourse on the topic on Brexit. The aim of this paper is to show that conventional metaphors can be creatively stretched through conceptual blending, producing instances of creative figurative language. Specifically, applying blending theory, we will analyse innovative conceptual blends, motivated by the conventional MARRIAGE/DIVORCE metaphor. In addition, the paper also examines the way in which creative figurative language produced in metaphorical blends provides discourse coherence at intertextual and intratextual levels

Conceiving God: Literal and Figurative Prompt for a More Tectonic Distinction

    Get PDF
John Sanders’ Theology in the Flesh, the first comprehensive overview of the toolkit that contemporary cognitive linguistics offers for theological appropriation, despite its remarkable success, gives rather minimal attention to blending theory, one of the discipline’s most formidable tools. This paper draws on blending theory to offer an alternative to Sanders’ chapter on conceiving God. Central to the proposal is claim that God-talk, like many of the advances in science, technology, and art, entails a kind of tectonic understanding and conceptual mapping that is neither literal nor figurative

TEORIJA KONCEPTUALNE INTEGRACIJE - KLJUČ ZA UNUTRAŠNJU KOGNITIVNU KOREOGRAFIJU MODIFICIRANIH IDIOMATSKIH IZRAZA

The paper represents an attempt to reveal the internal choreography of idiom modification. It is argued that modified idiomatic expressions can be explained using the postulates of the Conceptual Integration Theory. Optimality principles and vital relations, proposed by Fauconnier and Turner, clarify and regulate the relations within the conceptual integration network. The main aim of this paper is to analyze the extent to which vital relations and optimality principles at work in conceptual integration can account for mechanisms of idiom modification.U središtu je pozornosti ovog rada otkrivanje unutrašnje kognitivne koreografije modificiranih idiomatskih izraza. Smatra se da se modificirani idiomatski izrazi mogu objasniti teorijom konceptualne integracije čiji su tvorci Fauconnier i Turner. Principi optimalnosti i vitalni odnosi, ravnaju odnosima unutar integracijskih mreža. Glavni je cilj ovog rada utvrditi u kojoj mjeri vitalni odnosi zajedno s principima optimalnosti mogu pojasniti mehanizme modifikacije idioma
