Lessons Learned from a Decade of Providing Interactive, On-Demand High Performance Computing to Scientists and Engineers
For decades, the use of HPC systems was limited to those in the physical
sciences who had mastered their domain in conjunction with a deep understanding
of HPC architectures and algorithms. During these same decades, consumer
computing device advances produced tablets and smartphones that allow millions
of children to interactively develop and share code projects across the globe.
As the HPC community faces the challenges associated with guiding researchers
from disciplines using high productivity interactive tools to effective use of
HPC systems, it seems appropriate to revisit the assumptions surrounding the
necessary skills required for access to large computational systems. For over a
decade, MIT Lincoln Laboratory has been supporting interactive, on-demand high
performance computing by seamlessly integrating familiar high productivity
tools to provide users with an increased number of design turns, rapid
prototyping capability, and faster time to insight. In this paper, we discuss
the lessons learned while supporting interactive, on-demand high performance
computing from the perspectives of the users and the team supporting the users
and the system. Building on these lessons, we present an overview of current
needs and the technical solutions we are building to lower the barrier to entry

MISSED: an environment for mixed-signal microsystem testing and diagnosis
A tight link between design and test data is proposed for speeding up test-pattern generation and diagnosis during mixed-signal prototype verification. Test requirements are already incorporated at the behavioral level and specified with increased detail at lower hierarchical levels. A strict distinction between generic routines and implementation data makes reuse of software possible. A testability-analysis tool and test and DFT libraries support the designer to guarantee testability. Nonprofit Performance Management: Using Data to Measure and Improve Programs
Tracking and measuring data can give nonprofits a better understanding of the populations they serve and how they serve them. It can also help them identify areas they can improve to boost the reach and effectiveness of their programs. But many organizations struggle with the idea of using data.How do successful nonprofits go about the process of implementing their data practices? What software do they use? What are the obstacles they face, and how do they overcome them? To find out, we reached out to our network of experts and consultants for examples of organizations that were successfully using data to improve and direct their work, and narrowed their list of recommendations down to 10 nonprofits of different sizes, missions, and locations.We talked to staffers at each who were involved with data and analyzed the information we gathered for common themes, best practices, and any patterns that might be useful. We also asked them for advice for other organizations looking to replicate their successes and learn from their mistakes.From those 10 organizations, we chose seven for case studies about the different ways they were using data. OULDI-JISC Project Evaluation Report: the impact of new curriculum design tools and approaches on institutional process and design cultures
This report presents research and evaluation undertaken by the OULDI-JISC Project (Open University Learning Design Initiative JISC Project) between 2008 and 2012. In particular, it considers the impact of new curriculum design tools and approaches piloted by the project on institutional processes and design cultures. These tools and approaches include tools for sharing learning design expertise (Cloudworks), visualising designs (CompendiumLD, Module Map, Activity Profile) and for supporting design and reflection in workshops (Facilitation Cards, workshop activities, etc.). The project has adopted a learning design approach so as to help foreground pedagogy and learner experience. Nine pilots have been completed across six UK universities
