    Getting real about food prices

    Get PDF
The 2008 price spike in world grain prices had serious impacts on food security and poverty but analysts have consistently described these real food prices as low in historical terms. The inconsistency between the severity of the food crisis and low real prices results from the use of advanced and global economy price indices to calculate real prices. This ignores the high share of food in poor peopleā€™s expenditures and indirect effects of income growth on expenditure patterns of rich and poor consumers. Poor consumers have not experienced the same falls in real food prices as those with growing incomes and are more vulnerable to price shocks. As high and fluctuating international grain prices appear to be a feature of the current world economy, food price and policy analysis must recognise this, and develop and use different price indices that take account of differences between consumer groups

Getting Real About Race and Prisoner Rights

This Article explores the connection between the dramatic increases in the incarceration of non-whites and the parallel decline in the legal protections for prisoners over the same period. Using the social sciences, the Article suggests that racial tensions play a role in the decisions made by both guards and prison administrators. Further, the authors argue that the communities of these non-white prisoners are the least well equipped to advocate for their well-being. Ultimately, the Article concludes that the law is not currently equipped to confront the possibility of dealing with race-based tensions and structural inequities that are present in the prison system. The authors call for the courts to reassert their role in protecting discrete and insular minorities that lack access to the political power necessary to assert their rights. The Article concludes by making five specific suggestions for reform

Getting Real About Food: ā€œFed Upā€ & Nutrition Education is a summary presentation designed to help facilitate discussion about the U.S. food industry and its impact on the American diet. The Grace Cottage Community Health team identified the 2014 documentary ā€œFed Upā€ as a critical learning tool to enhancing their community education programs for patients, providers, and staff members; this project focuses on summarizing key points and statistics as well as highlighting opportunities for pilot-testing and implementation across different community venues.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/fmclerk/1121/thumbnail.jp

    Getting Real: Interactive Fieldwork

The Getting Real: Interactive Fieldwork walking tour is one of the CCW Graduate School's Year of Resilience events. It explores what happens when research and teaching take place outside the academic institution through engaging directly with a situation, place or space. How might this direct experience engage with our understandings of embodied (physically understood) proximity, and through this allow us to empathise with diverse situations. Taking ā€˜fieldworkā€™, i.e. when we leave our (enclosed) laboratories, be they the overall college or studios/workshops as a starting point, the walking tour invites us to makes connections with each other and the world beyond Wimbledon College of Arts. The day is led by artists Heather Ackroyd and Dan Harvey - Heather also has a background in theatre and performance, so it is an opportunity to talk across the Fine Art and Theatre programmes and levels. They have innovative insights into both research techniques and making processes, which in turn connects with their resilient approach to living and engaging with space and place. They have worked on many occasions with Cape Farewell, who are currently in residence at the CCW Graduate School
