    Atlanta University Center: Neighborhood Study

    Get PDF
The following report was produced as a part of Georgia Tech’s Red Line Corridor planning studio. Initially, the goal of this studio was to explore the possibility of transit-oriented development (TOD) in underserved communities along the southern portion of MARTA’s Red Line. However, the scope of the studio was expanded to include communities on Atlanta’s Westside that have also been subject to severe disinvestment. At the end of a selection process, four areas were selected for in-depth study and planning: English Avenue, Atlanta University Center, Fort McPherson / Lee Street, and East Point, GA. While each of these areas has a unique history and set of needs, they also share common challenges. These challenges include a lack of connectivity, and low levels of both private and public investment. But these challenges are only a part of the story. The goal of this studio isn’t to simply point out what’s wrong with the studied communities --it’s to point out what’s right, and to leverage these strengths to overcome any weaknesses that may exist

Presented on December 3, 2008 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm in the Center for Quality Growth and Regional Development 2nd floor classroom.Full report: Friendship Village Exploring the Critical Economic Development and Urban Design Link for Sustainable Development, January 2009Runtime: 77:11 minutes (Presentation)Runtime: 23:27 minutes (Q & A)The Friendship Village group had the charge of advising a large-scale land developer on directions for promoting sustainability in the plans for a 210 acre multi-use project in south Fulton County, Georgia. Their work included site design recommendations modeled after traditional town centers in ten case studies but also included innovative open space and stormwater management proposals and ideas about educational and health care facilities. The diverse professional audience expressed admiration and the developer’s lead representative indicated that results exceeded her expectations.Faculty Advisors: Nancey Green Leigh, Professor of City and Regional Planning ; Richard Dagenhart, Associate Professor of Architecture ; John Skach, Adjunct Professor; Senior Associate, Urban Collag

A spatial signature of sprawl: or the proportion and distribution of linear networkcircuits

    Get PDF
This paper sets out to investigate whether the frequency distribution ofthe linear network circuits within a graph-based representation of aroad transportation system can be helpful in identifying sprawl and, inparticular, whether a 'spatial signature of sprawl' can be determined. This paper is based upon an earlier study on Peachtree City, Georgia and in particular of its dual transportation system (roads and golf cartpaths). In order to fully understand the effect that the dualtransportation system has upon Peachtree City, the frequencydistribution of its circuits are compared to three, supposed, 'suburban' areas and three, supposed, 'urban' districts. The conclusion of thispaper is that there is, unquestionably, a measurable continuum between 'suburbia' and 'urbanity' and that this is reflected in the frequency, length and distribution of the graph network circuits. The main sectionof this paper is concerned with the presentation and discussion ofalternative algorithms for calculating these circuits. This section isfollowed by an introduction of a selection of methods for interpretingthe resultant data. Finally, with respect to Peachtree City, this paperconcludes that the effect of the dual transportation system is to make it more 'urban' than it would otherwise be, although it remains adistinctly suburban environment

Civil Society and Conflict Transformation in Abkhazia, Israel/Palestine, Nagorno-Karabakh, Transnistria and Western Sahara

The paper describes and analyses the role of civil society in five conflict cases – Abkhazia, Nagorno-Karabakh, Transnistria, Western Sahara and Israel/ Palestine. It evaluates the relative effectiveness of civil society organisations (CSOs) and assesses the potential and limits of CSO involvement in conflicts. In particular it concentrates on civil society activities in the fields of peace training and education, including formal and non-formal education, as well as research and media work. The research also identifies the obstacles that local third sector is faced with, examining experiences and lessons learned. The study then presents critical assessments of local CSO contributions to conflict transformation and concludes with a set of suggestions for local and mid-level civil society actors involved in these five conflict cases and beyond. This paper is an overview study, to provide ideas and documentation to the more detailed empirical research carried out in the context of the MICROCON Work Package ‘Conflict in the European Neighbourhood’.Civil society, European Union, European Neighbourhood, Abkhazia, Nagorno-Karabakh, Transnistria, Western Sahara, Israel/Palestine, violent conflict, conflict transformation

Subantarctic and Antarctic regions remain little explored with regards to their seaweed diversity. This study is based upon collections in the early 1970s and 2007–2013. It is supported by sequencing COI (mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I) and reports new records for four species of brown algae Hincksia granulosa, Hincksia sandriana, Myriotrichia clavaeformis, Syringoderma australe), four red algae (Erythrotrichia carnea, Paraglossum salicifolium, Phycodrys antarctica, Plumariopsis eatonii), one green alga (Chaetomorpha aerea) and of the oomycete Anisolpidium ectocarpii. A further four brown algae are reported at genus level and discussed (Cladostephus sp., Colpomenia sp., Dictyota sp., Punctaria sp.). Observations of the biology of three brown algal taxa (Cladothele decaisnei, Geminocarpus geminatus, Halopteris obovata) from the region are also reported here
