    A scalable real-time processing chain for radar exploiting illuminators of opportunity

    Includes bibliographical references.This thesis details the design of a processing chain and system software for a commensal radar system, that is, a radar that makes use of illuminators of opportunity to provide the transmitted waveform. The stages of data acquisition from receiver back-end, direct path interference and clutter suppression, range/Doppler processing and target detection are described and targeted to general purpose commercial off-the-shelf computing hardware. A detailed low level design of such a processing chain for commensal radar which includes both processing stages and processing stage interactions has, to date, not been presented in the Literature. Furthermore, a novel deployment configuration for a networked multi-site FM broadcast band commensal radar system is presented in which the reference and surveillance channels are record at separate locations

    On the Use of Reciprocal Filter against WiFi Packets for Passive Radar

    This paper aims at a critical review of the signal processing scheme used in WiFi-based passive radar in order to limit its complexity and enhance its suitability for short range civilian applications. To this purpose the exploitation of a reciprocal filtering strategy is investigated as an alternative to conventional matched filtering at the range compression stage. Along with the well-known advantage of a remarkable sidelobes control capability for the resulting range-Doppler response, the use of a reciprocal filter is shown to provide additional benefits for the specific sensor subject of this study. Specifically, it allows to streamline the disturbance cancellation stage and to implement a unified signal processing architecture which is capable to handle the different modulation schemes typically adopted in WiFi transmissions. Appropriate adjustments are also proposed to the theoretical reciprocal filter in order to cope with the inherent loss in term of signal-to-noise power ratio. The effectiveness of the revised signal processing scheme encompassing the reciprocal filtering strategy is proved against both simulated and experimental datasets

    Log-Likelihood Clustering-Enabled Passive RF Sensing for Residential Activity Recognition

    Physical activity recognition is an important research area in pervasive computing because of its importance for e-healthcare, security, and human-machine interaction. Among various approaches, passive radio frequency sensing is a well-tried radar principle that has potential to provide the unique solution for non-invasive activity detection and recognition. However, this technology is still far from mature. This paper presents a novel hidden Markov model-based log-likelihood matrix for characterizing the Doppler shifts to break the fixed sliding window limitation in traditional feature extraction approaches. We prove the effectiveness of the proposed feature extraction method by K-means K-medoids clustering algorithms with experimental Doppler data gathered from a passive radar system. The results show that the time adaptive log-likelihood matrix outperforms the traditional singular value decomposition, principal component analysis, and physical feature-based approaches, and reaches 80% in recognizing rate

    SimHumalator: An Open Source End-to-End Radar Simulator For Human Activity Recognition

    Radio-frequency based non-cooperative monitor ing of humans has numerous applications ranging from law enforcement to ubiquitous sensing applications such as ambient assisted living and bio-medical applications for non-intrusively monitoring patients. Large training datasets, almost unlimited memory capacity, and ever- increasing processing speeds of computers could drive forward the data- driven deep-learning focused research in the above applications. However, generating and labeling large volumes of high-quality, diverse radar datasets is an onerous task. Furthermore, unlike the fields of vision and image processing, the radar community has limited access to databases that contain large volumes of experimental data. Therefore, in this article, we present an open-source motion capture data-driven simulation tool, SimHumalator, that can generate large volumes of human micro-Doppler radar data in passive WiFi scenarios. The simulator integrates IEEE 802.11 WiFi standard(IEEE 802.11g, n, and ad) compliant transmissions with the human animation data to generate the micro-Doppler features that incorporate the diversity of human motion characteristics and the sensor parameters. The simulated signatures have been validated with experimental data gathered using an in-house-built hardware prototype. This article describes simulation methodology in detail and provides case studies on the feasibility of using simulated micro-Doppler spectrograms for data augmentation tasks

    Convergent Communication, Sensing and Localization in 6G Systems: An Overview of Technologies, Opportunities and Challenges

    Herein, we focus on convergent 6G communication, localization and sensing systems by identifying key technology enablers, discussing their underlying challenges, implementation issues, and recommending potential solutions. Moreover, we discuss exciting new opportunities for integrated localization and sensing applications, which will disrupt traditional design principles and revolutionize the way we live, interact with our environment, and do business. Regarding potential enabling technologies, 6G will continue to develop towards even higher frequency ranges, wider bandwidths, and massive antenna arrays. In turn, this will enable sensing solutions with very fine range, Doppler, and angular resolutions, as well as localization to cm-level degree of accuracy. Besides, new materials, device types, and reconfigurable surfaces will allow network operators to reshape and control the electromagnetic response of the environment. At the same time, machine learning and artificial intelligence will leverage the unprecedented availability of data and computing resources to tackle the biggest and hardest problems in wireless communication systems. As a result, 6G will be truly intelligent wireless systems that will provide not only ubiquitous communication but also empower high accuracy localization and high-resolution sensing services. They will become the catalyst for this revolution by bringing about a unique new set of features and service capabilities, where localization and sensing will coexist with communication, continuously sharing the available resources in time, frequency, and space. This work concludes by highlighting foundational research challenges, as well as implications and opportunities related to privacy, security, and trust

    Dynamic Radar Network of UAVs: A Joint Navigation and Tracking Approach

    Nowadays there is a growing research interest on the possibility of enriching small flying robots with autonomous sensing and online navigation capabilities. This will enable a large number of applications spanning from remote surveillance to logistics, smarter cities and emergency aid in hazardous environments. In this context, an emerging problem is to track unauthorized small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) hiding behind buildings or concealing in large UAV networks. In contrast with current solutions mainly based on static and on-ground radars, this paper proposes the idea of a dynamic radar network of UAVs for real-time and high-accuracy tracking of malicious targets. To this end, we describe a solution for real-time navigation of UAVs to track a dynamic target using heterogeneously sensed information. Such information is shared by the UAVs with their neighbors via multi-hops, allowing tracking the target by a local Bayesian estimator running at each agent. Since not all the paths are equal in terms of information gathering point-of-view, the UAVs plan their own trajectory by minimizing the posterior covariance matrix of the target state under UAV kinematic and anti-collision constraints. Our results show how a dynamic network of radars attains better localization results compared to a fixed configuration and how the on-board sensor technology impacts the accuracy in tracking a target with different radar cross sections, especially in non line-of-sight (NLOS) situations

    Fundamental aspects of netted radar performance

    Netted radar employs several spatially distributed transmitters and receivers for information retrieval. This system topology offers many advantages over traditional monostatic and bistatic systems which use a single transmitter and a single receiver. For example, it provides better utilization of reflected energy, more flexible system arrangement and enhanced information retrieval capability. Therefore, the netted radar system is of emerging interests among radar researchers. This work investigates several fundamental aspects that determine netted radar performance. This includes netted radar sensitivity, the netted radar ambiguity function and the netted radar ground plane effect. Mathematical models are developed to provide a mean to examine different aspects of netted radar performance. Software simulations examine netted radar performance over a range of parameter variations. Simulation results show that netted radar can offer better performance over traditional monnostatic and bistatic radar in many cases. Some elementary field trials have been conducted using a prototype netted radar system developed within the UCL radar group to examine aspects of netted radar performance in practice. The field trials are focused on netted radar range and sensitivity which are fundamental. The field trial results show that the theoretical benefits that netted radar can offer are generally realizable in practice
