    Novel passive localization algorithm based on double side matrix-restricted total least squares

    AbstractIn order to solve the bearings-only passive localization problem in the presence of erroneous observer position, a novel algorithm based on double side matrix-restricted total least squares (DSMRTLS) is proposed. First, the aforementioned passive localization problem is transferred to the DSMRTLS problem by deriving a multiplicative structure for both the observation matrix and the observation vector. Second, the corresponding optimization problem of the DSMRTLS problem without constraint is derived, which can be approximated as the generalized Rayleigh quotient minimization problem. Then, the localization solution which is globally optimal and asymptotically unbiased can be got by generalized eigenvalue decomposition. Simulation results verify the rationality of the approximation and the good performance of the proposed algorithm compared with several typical algorithms

However, the algorithms analyzed are used in other current IEW systems. The underlying algorithm assumptions (including unmodeled errors) are examined along with their appropriateness for TRAILBLAZER. Coding and documentation problems are then discussed.     Direct comparison between satellite electric field measurements and the visual aurora

    Electric field data from two passes of the Injun 5 satellite, one corresponding to magnetically quiet conditions and one corresponding to substorm conditions, are compared with simultaneous all-sky-camera data from College, Alaska. In each case, a significant deviation of the electric field from the expected V x B field (where V is the satellite velocity) was evident and a distinct electric field reversal could be identified. In the region of substantial electric field equatorward of the electric field reversal a diffuse auroral arc was observed during the magnetically quiet pass and auroral patches were observed during the substorm pass. The motion of the auroral patches was consistent with the general direction and magnitude of the E x B drift computed from the satellite electric field measurements. In the substorm case the electric field reversal occurred very near a discrete auroral arc at the poleward side of the diffuse arcs and patches. Comparison of the quiet time and substorm cases suggests that the convection electric field penetrates deeper into the magnetosphere during a substorm

    It has always been an issue for an armed force, or government, to obtain complete radar coverage over an area of interest. Generally, this objective remains unaccomplished due to geographical, technical, and/or operational reasons (meaning topographic obstacles, transmitted power, extreme isolation, hierarchy of objectives, etc.) The fact of having vast areas of territory beyond radar coverage can be decisive in an armed conflict. With the recent resurgence of bistatic radar theory and applications, now in the form of Passive Coherent Location (PCL) systems, using existing signal sources (TC and Radio Stations) it is possible to decrease the blind zones of a country\u27s air defense system, in a somehow economic and effective way. The general purpose of this thesis is to develop a methodology to determine possible receiver locations needed to implement a PCL system, while emphasizing low altitude coverage, specific terrain and atmospheric information, available signal sources and the needed for coverage
