Review on Active and Passive Remote Sensing Techniques for Road Extraction
Digital maps of road networks are a vital part of digital cities and intelligent transportation. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review on road extraction based on various remote sensing data sources, including high-resolution images, hyperspectral images, synthetic aperture radar images, and light detection and ranging. This review is divided into three parts. Part 1 provides an overview of the existing data acquisition techniques for road extraction, including data acquisition methods, typical sensors, application status, and prospects. Part 2 underlines the main road extraction methods based on four data sources. In this section, road extraction methods based on different data sources are described and analysed in detail. Part 3 presents the combined application of multisource data for road extraction. Evidently, different data acquisition techniques have unique advantages, and the combination of multiple sources can improve the accuracy of road extraction. The main aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive reference for research on existing road extraction technologies.Peer reviewe
Robust Modular Feature-Based Terrain-Aided Visual Navigation and Mapping
The visual feature-based Terrain-Aided Navigation (TAN) system presented in this thesis addresses the problem of constraining inertial drift introduced into the location estimate of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in GPS-denied environment. The presented TAN system utilises salient visual features representing semantic or human-interpretable objects (roads, forest and water boundaries) from onboard aerial imagery and associates them to a database of reference features created a-priori, through application of the same feature detection algorithms to satellite imagery. Correlation of the detected features with the reference features via a series of the robust data association steps allows a localisation solution to be achieved with a finite absolute bound precision defined by the certainty of the reference dataset. The feature-based Visual Navigation System (VNS) presented in this thesis was originally developed for a navigation application using simulated multi-year satellite image datasets. The extension of the system application into the mapping domain, in turn, has been based on the real (not simulated) flight data and imagery. In the mapping study the full potential of the system, being a versatile tool for enhancing the accuracy of the information derived from the aerial imagery has been demonstrated. Not only have the visual features, such as road networks, shorelines and water bodies, been used to obtain a position ’fix’, they have also been used in reverse for accurate mapping of vehicles detected on the roads into an inertial space with improved precision. Combined correction of the geo-coding errors and improved aircraft localisation formed a robust solution to the defense mapping application. A system of the proposed design will provide a complete independent navigation solution to an autonomous UAV and additionally give it object tracking capability

Road extraction from high resolution satellite images has been an important research topic for analysis of urban areas. In this paper road extraction based on PCNN and Chan-Vese active contour model are compared. It is difficult and computationally expensive to extract roads from the original image due to presences of other road-like features with straight edges. The image is pre-processed using median filter to reduce the noise. Then road extraction is performed using PCNN and Chan-Vese active contour model. Nonlinear segments are removed using morphological operations. Finally the accuracy for the road extracted images is evaluated based on quality measures.Izdvajanje cesta pomoću satelitskih slika visoke rezolucije je važna istraživačka tema za analizu urbanih područja. U ovom radu ekstrakcije ceste se uspoređuju na PCNN i Chan-Vese aktivnom modelu. Teško je i računalno skupo izdvojiti ceste iz originalne slike zbog prisutnosti drugih elemenata ravnih rubova sličnih cestama. Slika je prethodno obrađena korištenjem filtera za smanjenje smetnji. Zatim se ekstrakcija ceste izvodi pomoću PCNN i Chan-Vese aktivnog modela konture. Nelinearni segmenti su uklonjeni primjenom morfoloških operacija. Konačno, točnost za ceste izdvojene iz slika se ocjenjuje na temelju kvalitativnih mjera
Information Extraction and Modeling from Remote Sensing Images: Application to the Enhancement of Digital Elevation Models
To deal with high complexity data such as remote sensing images presenting metric resolution over large areas, an innovative, fast and robust image processing system is presented.
The modeling of increasing level of information is used to extract, represent and link image features to semantic content.
The potential of the proposed techniques is demonstrated with an application to enhance and regularize digital elevation models based on information collected from RS images
Automatic road network extraction from high resolution satellite imagery using spectral classification methods
Road networks play an important role in a number of geospatial applications, such as cartographic, infrastructure planning and traffic routing software. Automatic and semi-automatic road network extraction techniques have significantly increased the extraction rate of road networks. Automated processes still yield some erroneous and incomplete results and costly human intervention is still required to evaluate results and correct errors. With the aim of improving the accuracy of road extraction systems, three objectives are defined in this thesis: Firstly, the study seeks to develop a flexible semi-automated road extraction system, capable of extracting roads from QuickBird satellite imagery. The second objective is to integrate a variety of algorithms within the road network extraction system. The benefits of using each of these algorithms within the proposed road extraction system, is illustrated. Finally, a fully automated system is proposed by incorporating a number of the algorithms investigated throughout the thesis. Large-scale 3D environmental modelling and visualisation for flood hazard warning.
3D environment reconstruction has received great interest in recent years in areas such as city planning, virtual tourism and flood hazard warning. With the rapid development of computer technologies, it has become possible and necessary to develop new methodologies and techniques for real time simulation for virtual environments applications. This thesis proposes a novel dynamic simulation scheme for flood hazard warning. The work consists of three main parts: digital terrain modelling; 3D environmental reconstruction and system development; flood simulation models. The digital terrain model is constructed using real world measurement data of GIS, in terms of digital elevation data and satellite image data. An NTSP algorithm is proposed for very large data assessing, terrain modelling and visualisation. A pyramidal data arrangement structure is used for dealing with the requirements of terrain details with different resolutions. The 3D environmental reconstruction system is made up of environmental image segmentation for object identification, a new shape match method and an intelligent reconstruction system. The active contours-based multi-resolution vector-valued framework and the multi-seed region growing method are both used for extracting necessary objects from images. The shape match method is used with a template in the spatial domain for a 3D detailed small scale urban environment reconstruction. The intelligent reconstruction system is designed to recreate the whole model based on specific features of objects for large scale environment reconstruction. This study then proposes a new flood simulation scheme which is an important application of the 3D environmental reconstruction system. Two new flooding models have been developed. The first one is flood spreading model which is useful for large scale flood simulation. It consists of flooding image spatial segmentation, a water level calculation process, a standard gradient descent method for energy minimization, a flood region search and a merge process. The finite volume hydrodynamic model is built from shallow water equations which is useful for urban area flood simulation. The proposed 3D urban environment reconstruction system was tested on our simulation platform. The experiment results indicate that this method is capable of dealing with complicated and high resolution region reconstruction which is useful for many applications. When testing the 3D flood simulation system, the simulation results are very close to the real flood situation, and this method has faster speed and greater accuracy of simulating the inundation area in comparison to the conventional flood simulation model

Road network extraction has been one of the most challenging research topics in GIS. In addition to the afore-mentioned problems, special attention must be devoted to the flexibility of the heuristic system and road network extraction in urban areas. For example, there are perturbations, such as the shadows of buildings. The algorithm outlined in this thesis is merely a first step in this direction. Many further steps will have to be taken to develop the algorithm more fully. Therefore, future work will focus on the automatic road network completion methodologies. In addition, better road network descriptions can be achieved by performing more testsusing different types of imagery
Very High Resolution (VHR) Satellite Imagery: Processing and Applications
Recently, growing interest in the use of remote sensing imagery has appeared to provide synoptic maps of water quality parameters in coastal and inner water ecosystems;, monitoring of complex land ecosystems for biodiversity conservation; precision agriculture for the management of soils, crops, and pests; urban planning; disaster monitoring, etc. However, for these maps to achieve their full potential, it is important to engage in periodic monitoring and analysis of multi-temporal changes. In this context, very high resolution (VHR) satellite-based optical, infrared, and radar imaging instruments provide reliable information to implement spatially-based conservation actions. Moreover, they enable observations of parameters of our environment at greater broader spatial and finer temporal scales than those allowed through field observation alone. In this sense, recent very high resolution satellite technologies and image processing algorithms present the opportunity to develop quantitative techniques that have the potential to improve upon traditional techniques in terms of cost, mapping fidelity, and objectivity. Typical applications include multi-temporal classification, recognition and tracking of specific patterns, multisensor data fusion, analysis of land/marine ecosystem processes and environment monitoring, etc. This book aims to collect new developments, methodologies, and applications of very high resolution satellite data for remote sensing.
