    On Transmission System Design for Wireless Broadcasting

    This thesis considers aspects related to the design and standardisation of transmission systems for wireless broadcasting, comprising terrestrial and mobile reception. The purpose is to identify which factors influence the technical decisions and what issues could be better considered in the design process in order to assess different use cases, service scenarios and end-user quality. Further, the necessity of cross-layer optimisation for efficient data transmission is emphasised and means to take this into consideration are suggested. The work is mainly related terrestrial and mobile digital video broadcasting systems but many of the findings can be generalised also to other transmission systems and design processes. The work has led to three main conclusions. First, it is discovered that there are no sufficiently accurate error criteria for measuring the subjective perceived audiovisual quality that could be utilised in transmission system design. Means for designing new error criteria for mobile TV (television) services are suggested and similar work related to other services is recommended. Second, it is suggested that in addition to commercial requirements there should be technical requirements setting the frame work for the design process of a new transmission system. The technical requirements should include the assessed reception conditions, technical quality of service and service functionalities. Reception conditions comprise radio channel models, receiver types and antenna types. Technical quality of service consists of bandwidth, timeliness and reliability. Of these, the thesis focuses on radio channel models and errorcriteria (reliability) as two of the most important design challenges and provides means to optimise transmission parameters based on these. Third, the thesis argues that the most favourable development for wireless broadcasting would be a single system suitable for all scenarios of wireless broadcasting. It is claimed that there are no major technical obstacles to achieve this and that the recently published second generation digital terrestrial television broadcasting system provides a good basis.     A two-level Markov model for packet loss in UDP/IP-based real-time video applications targeting residential users

    The packet loss characteristics of Internet paths that include residential broadband links are not well understood, and there are no good models for their behaviour. This compli- cates the design of real-time video applications targeting home users, since it is difficult to choose appropriate error correction and concealment algorithms without a good model for the types of loss observed. Using measurements of residential broadband networks in the UK and Finland, we show that existing models for packet loss, such as the Gilbert model and simple hidden Markov models, do not effectively model the loss patterns seen in this environment. We present a new two-level Markov model for packet loss that can more accurately describe the characteristics of these links, and quantify the effectiveness of this model. We demonstrate that our new packet loss model allows for improved application design, by using it to model the performance of forward error correction on such links

The model is used to fit packet loss processes of backbone and DVB-H traffic traces. The results show that simple Markov models are appropriate to capture the observed loss pattern and to discuss how such models can be used to examine the quality degradations caused by packet losses

    Evaluation of unidirectional background push content download services for the delivery of television programs

    Este trabajo de tesis presenta los servicios de descarga de contenido en modo push como un mecanismo eficiente para el envío de contenido de televisión pre-producido sobre redes de difusión. Hoy en día, los operadores de red dedican una cantidad considerable de recursos de red a la entrega en vivo de contenido televisivo, tanto sobre redes de difusión como sobre conexiones unidireccionales. Esta oferta de servicios responde únicamente a requisitos comerciales: disponer de los contenidos televisivos en cualquier momento y lugar. Sin embargo, desde un punto de vista estrictamente académico, el envío en vivo es únicamente un requerimiento para el contenido en vivo, no para contenidos que ya han sido producidos con anterioridad a su emisión. Más aún, la difusión es solo eficiente cuando el contenido es suficientemente popular. Los servicios bajo estudio en esta tesis utilizan capacidad residual en redes de difusión para enviar contenido pre-producido para que se almacene en los equipos de usuario. La propuesta se justifica únicamente por su eficiencia. Por un lado, genera valor de recursos de red que no se aprovecharían de otra manera. Por otro lado, realiza la entrega de contenidos pre-producidos y populares de la manera más eficiente: sobre servicios de descarga de contenidos en difusión. Los resultados incluyen modelos para la popularidad y la duración de contenidos, valiosos para cualquier trabajo de investigación basados en la entrega de contenidos televisivos. Además, la tesis evalúa la capacidad residual disponible en redes de difusión, por medio de estudios empíricos. Después, estos resultados son utilizados en simulaciones que evalúan las prestaciones de los servicios propuestos en escenarios diferentes y para aplicaciones diferentes. La evaluación demuestra que este tipo de servicios son un recurso muy útil para la entrega de contenido televisivo.This thesis dissertation presents background push Content Download Services as an efficient mechanism to deliver pre-produced television content through existing broadcast networks. Nowadays, network operators dedicate a considerable amount of network resources to live streaming live, through both broadcast and unicast connections. This service offering responds solely to commercial requirements: Content must be available anytime and anywhere. However, from a strictly academic point of view, live streaming is only a requirement for live content and not for pre-produced content. Moreover, broadcasting is only efficient when the content is sufficiently popular. The services under study in this thesis use residual capacity in broadcast networks to push popular, pre-produced content to storage capacity in customer premises equipment. The proposal responds only to efficiency requirements. On one hand, it creates value from network resources otherwise unused. On the other hand, it delivers popular pre-produced content in the most efficient way: through broadcast download services. The results include models for the popularity and the duration of television content, valuable for any research work dealing with file-based delivery of television content. Later, the thesis evaluates the residual capacity available in broadcast networks through empirical studies. These results are used in simulations to evaluate the performance of background push content download services in different scenarios and for different applications.     Evaluation of background push content download services to mobile devices over DVB networks

The service under study is based on the FLUTE protocol. Specifically, FLUTE packets fill the spare capacity in the IP tunnels reserved for the primary streaming service (opportunistic insertion). The paper also evaluates the use of AL-FEC parity to overcome transmission errors,object multiplexing to send the most popular multimedia contents more frequently and cache management policies that consider user preferences in order to keep in storage the most useful items. The service has been evaluated through simulations and measurements performed with an application prototype based on the DVB-H standards. The results show that AL-FEC enables the use of residual capacity for background content download services. In turn, AL-FEC, as well as object multiplexing, improves the relation between the number of content items and the overall access time.     A simulation-based algorithm for solving the resource-assignment problem in satellite telecommunication networks

    Thesis (M.Sc.Eng.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2010.Satellite networks provide an alternative to terrestrial networks where cost and lack of infrastructure are driving parameters. For a satellite network to be cost effective one needs to be able to increase the efficiency of the network: this is accomplished by focusing on the parameters that affect the performance of the system and improving on them where possible. The factors affecting the network performance include the capacity, the propagation delay, the protocol used, and the channel error rate, among others. There are various ways to implement a satellite network depending on the satellite orbit, the architecture used, the access technique used, the radio interfaces used, etc. This thesis work describes the chosen satellite standard, Digital Video Broadcasting – Return Channel via Satellite (DVB-RCS) and the associated Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols. Two protocols were designed and investigated under ideal channel conditions, these being the Combined Free/Demand Assigned Multiple Access with Piggy Backing – Packet Dropping (CF/DAMA-PB-PD) protocol; and the Combined Free/Demand Assigned Multiple Access with Piggy Backing – Prioritised Earliest Deadline First (CF/DAMA-PB-PEDF) protocol, both derived from the Combined Free/Demand Assigned Multiple Access with Piggy Backing (CF/DAMA-PB) protocol. The multimedia traffic models for voice, video and web classes are described, validated through simulations and presented; these provide the heterogeneous vi traffic required for evaluating the performance of the satellite system implemented and the designed protocols. Under the multimedia traffic, CF/DAMA-PB-PD was shown to excel in average packet delay reduction while reducing the overall system throughput. The CF/DAMA-PB-PEDF does not contribute to an improvement over the CF/DAMA-PB-PD protocol. The effects of a non-ideal channel on the CF/DAMA-PB-PD protocol was investigated and presented along with the design of three MAC protocols that take the channel characteristics into account to improve on the system performance. The cross-layer interactions, more specifically the interaction between the physical and data–link layers, were used, investigated and presented. The channel state information in terms of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was used to improve the system performance. The five protocols evaluated under non-ideal channel conditions were the CF/DAMA-PB, CF/DAMA-PB-PD, CF/DAMA-PB-BSNRF, CF/DAMA-PB-DD and the CF/DAMA-PB-BSNRF+DD. The best overall performance, both in average packet delay while maintaining good QoS levels and throughput was shown to be that of the CF/DAMA-PB-DD protocol

    Application of network coding in satellite broadcast and multiple access channels

    Satellite broadcasting and relaying capabilities enable mobile broadcast systems over wide geographical areas, which opens large market possibilities for handheld, vehicular and fixed user terminals. The geostationary (GEO) satellite orbit is highly suited for such applications, as it spares the need for satellite terminals to track the movement of the spacecraft, with important savings in terms of complexity and cost. The large radius of the GEO orbit (more than 40000 km) has two main drawbacks. One is the large free space loss experienced by a signal traveling to or from the satellite, which limits the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) margins in the link budget with respect to terrestrial systems. The second drawback of the GEO orbit is the large propagation delay (about 250 msec) that limits the use of feedback in both the forward (satellite to satellite terminal) and the reverse (satellite terminal to satellite) link. The limited margin protection causes loss of service availability in environments where there is no direct line of sight to the satellite, such as urban areas. The large propagation delay on its turn, together with the large terminal population size usually served by a GEO satellite, limit the use of feedback, which is at the basis of error-control. In the reverse link, especially in the case of fixed terminals, packet losses are mainly due to collisions, that severely limit the access to satellite services in case a random access scheme is adopted. The need for improvements and further understanding of these setups lead to the development of our work. In this dissertation we study the application of network coding to counteract the above mentioned channel impairments in satellite systems. The idea of using network coding stems from the fact that it allows to efficiently exploit the diversity, either temporal or spatial, present in the system. In the following we outline the original contributions included in each of the chapters of the dissertation. Chapter 3. This chapter deals with channel impairments in the forward link, and specifically with the problem of missing coverage in Urban environments for land mobile satellite (LMS) networks. By applying the Max-flow Min-cut theorem we derive a lower bound on the maximum coverage that can be achieved through cooperation. Inspired by this result, we propose a practical scheme, keeping in mind the compatibility with the DVB-SH standard. We developed a simulator in Matlab/C++ based on the physical layer abstraction and used it to test the performance gain of our scheme with a benchmark relaying scheme that does allow coding at packet level. Chapter 4. The second chapter of contributions is devoted to the information theoretical study of real-time streaming transmissions over fading channels with channel state information at the transmitter only. We introduce this new channel model and propose several transmission schemes, one of which is proved to be asymptotically optimal in terms of throughput. We also provide an upper bound on the achievable throughput for the proposed channel model and compare it numerically with the proposed schemes over a Rayleigh fading channel. Chapter 5. Chapter 5 is devoted to the study of throughput and delay in non-real-time streaming transmission over block fading channels. We derive bounds on the throughput and the delay for this channel and propose different coding techniques based on time-sharing. For each of them we carry out an analytical study of the performance. Finally, we compare numerically the performance of the proposed schemes over a Rayleigh fading channel. Chapter 6. In the last technical chapter we propose a collision resolution method for the return link based on physical layer network coding over extended Galois field (EGF). The proposed scheme extracts information from the colliding signals and achieves important gains with respect to Slotted ALOHA systems as well as with respect to other collision resolution schemes.Una de les característiques mes importants de les plataformes de comunicacions per satèl.lit és la seva capacitat de retransmetre senyals rebuts a un gran número de terminals. Això es fonamental en contextes com la difusió a terminals mòbils o la comunicació entre màquines. Al mateix temps, la disponibilitat d’un canal de retorn permet la creació de sistemes de comunicacions per satèl.lit interactius que, en principi, poden arribar a qualsevol punt del planeta. Els satèl.lits Geoestacionaris son particularment adequats per a complir amb aquesta tasca. Aquest tipus de satèl.lits manté una posició fixa respecte a la Terra, estalviant als terminals terrestres la necessitat de seguir el seu moviment en el cel. Per altra banda, la gran distància que separa la Terra dels satèl.lits Geoestacionaris introdueix grans retrassos en les comunicacions que, afegit al gran número de terminals en servei, limita l’ús de tècniques de retransmissió basades en acknowledgments en cas de pèrdua de paquets. Per tal de sol.lucionar el problema de la pèrdua de paquets, les tècniques més utilitzades son el desplegament de repetidors terrestres, anomenats gap fillers, l’ús de codis de protecció a nivell de paquet i mecanismes proactius de resolució de col.lisions en el canal de retorn. En aquesta tesi s’analitzen i s’estudien sol.lucions a problemes en la comunicació per satèl.lit tant en el canal de baixada com el de pujada. En concret, es consideren tres escenaris diferents. El primer escenari es la transmissió a grans poblacions de terminals mòbils en enorns urbans, que es veuen particularment afectats per la pèrdua de paquets degut a l’obstrucció, per part dels edificis, de la línia de visió amb el satèl.lit. La sol.lució que considerem consisteix en la utilització de la cooperació entre terminals. Una vegada obtinguda una mesura del guany que es pot assolir mitjançant cooperació en un model bàsic de xarxa, a través del teorema Max-flow Min-cut, proposem un esquema de cooperació compatible amb estàndards de comunicació existents. El segon escenari que considerem es la transmissió de vídeo, un tipus de tràfic particularment sensible a la pèrdua de paquets i retards endògens als sistemes de comunicació per satèl.lit. Considerem els casos de transmissió en temps real i en diferit, des de la perspectiva de teoria de la informació, i estudiem diferents tècniques de codificació analítica i numèrica. Un dels resultats principals obtinguts es l’extensió del límit assolible de la capacitat ergòdica del canal en cas que el transmissor rebi les dades de manera gradual, enlloc de rebre-les totes a l’inici de la transmissió. El tercer escenari que considerem es l’accés aleatori al satèl.lit. Desenvolupem un esquema de recuperació dels paquets perduts basat en la codificació de xarxa a nivell físic i en extensions a camps de Galois, amb resultats molt prometedors en termes de rendiment. També estudiem aspectes relacionats amb la implementació pràctica d’aquest esquema
