Geometric Planar Networks on Bichromatic Points
We study four classical graph problems – Hamiltonian path, Traveling salesman, Minimum spanning tree, and Minimum perfect matching on geometric graphs induced by bichromatic ( Open image in new window and Open image in new window ) points. These problems have been widely studied for points in the Euclidean plane, and many of them are NP -hard. In this work, we consider these problems in two restricted settings: (i) collinear points and (ii) equidistant points on a circle. We show that almost all of these problems can be solved in linear time in these constrained, yet non-trivial settings.acceptedVersio
Spanners for Geometric Intersection Graphs
Efficient algorithms are presented for constructing spanners in geometric
intersection graphs. For a unit ball graph in R^k, a (1+\epsilon)-spanner is
obtained using efficient partitioning of the space into hypercubes and solving
bichromatic closest pair problems. The spanner construction has almost
equivalent complexity to the construction of Euclidean minimum spanning trees.
The results are extended to arbitrary ball graphs with a sub-quadratic running
time.
For unit ball graphs, the spanners have a small separator decomposition which
can be used to obtain efficient algorithms for approximating proximity problems
like diameter and distance queries. The results on compressed quadtrees,
geometric graph separators, and diameter approximation might be of independent

Computing the Greedy Spanner in Linear Space
The greedy spanner is a high-quality spanner: its total weight, edge count
and maximal degree are asymptotically optimal and in practice significantly
better than for any other spanner with reasonable construction time.
Unfortunately, all known algorithms that compute the greedy spanner of n points
use Omega(n^2) space, which is impractical on large instances. To the best of
our knowledge, the largest instance for which the greedy spanner was computed
so far has about 13,000 vertices.
We present a O(n)-space algorithm that computes the same spanner for points
in R^d running in O(n^2 log^2 n) time for any fixed stretch factor and
dimension. We discuss and evaluate a number of optimizations to its running
time, which allowed us to compute the greedy spanner on a graph with a million
vertices. To our knowledge, this is also the first algorithm for the greedy
spanner with a near-quadratic running time guarantee that has actually been
implemented
Algorithms for Stable Matching and Clustering in a Grid
We study a discrete version of a geometric stable marriage problem originally
proposed in a continuous setting by Hoffman, Holroyd, and Peres, in which
points in the plane are stably matched to cluster centers, as prioritized by
their distances, so that each cluster center is apportioned a set of points of
equal area. We show that, for a discretization of the problem to an
grid of pixels with centers, the problem can be solved in time , and we experiment with two slower but more practical algorithms and
a hybrid method that switches from one of these algorithms to the other to gain
greater efficiency than either algorithm alone. We also show how to combine
geometric stable matchings with a -means clustering algorithm, so as to
provide a geometric political-districting algorithm that views distance in
economic terms, and we experiment with weighted versions of stable -means in

Reverse Nearest Neighbor Heat Maps: A Tool for Influence Exploration
We study the problem of constructing a reverse nearest neighbor (RNN) heat
map by finding the RNN set of every point in a two-dimensional space. Based on
the RNN set of a point, we obtain a quantitative influence (i.e., heat) for the
point. The heat map provides a global view on the influence distribution in the
space, and hence supports exploratory analyses in many applications such as
marketing and resource management. To construct such a heat map, we first
reduce it to a problem called Region Coloring (RC), which divides the space
into disjoint regions within which all the points have the same RNN set. We
then propose a novel algorithm named CREST that efficiently solves the RC
problem by labeling each region with the heat value of its containing points.
In CREST, we propose innovative techniques to avoid processing expensive RNN
queries and greatly reduce the number of region labeling operations. We perform
detailed analyses on the complexity of CREST and lower bounds of the RC
problem, and prove that CREST is asymptotically optimal in the worst case.
Extensive experiments with both real and synthetic data sets demonstrate that
CREST outperforms alternative algorithms by several orders of magnitude.Comment: Accepted to appear in ICDE 201
Graph Treewidth and Geometric Thickness Parameters
Consider a drawing of a graph in the plane such that crossing edges are
coloured differently. The minimum number of colours, taken over all drawings of
, is the classical graph parameter "thickness". By restricting the edges to
be straight, we obtain the "geometric thickness". By further restricting the
vertices to be in convex position, we obtain the "book thickness". This paper
studies the relationship between these parameters and treewidth.
Our first main result states that for graphs of treewidth , the maximum
thickness and the maximum geometric thickness both equal .
This says that the lower bound for thickness can be matched by an upper bound,
even in the more restrictive geometric setting. Our second main result states
that for graphs of treewidth , the maximum book thickness equals if and equals if . This refutes a conjecture of Ganley and
Heath [Discrete Appl. Math. 109(3):215-221, 2001]. Analogous results are proved
