    From Preface: This is the fourteen time when the conference “Dynamical Systems – Theory and Applications” gathers a numerous group of outstanding scientists and engineers, who deal with widely understood problems of theoretical and applied dynamics. Organization of the conference would not have been possible without a great effort of the staff of the Department of Automation, Biomechanics and Mechatronics. The patronage over the conference has been taken by the Committee of Mechanics of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. It is a great pleasure that our invitation has been accepted by so many people, including good colleagues and friends as well as a large group of researchers and scientists, who decided to participate in the conference for the first time. With proud and satisfaction we welcome nearly 250 persons from 38 countries all over the world. They decided to share the results of their research and many years experiences in the discipline of dynamical systems by submitting many very interesting papers.     Finite Element Modal Formulation for Panel Flutter at Hypersonic Speeds and Elevated Temperatures

    A finite element time domain modal formulation for analyzing flutter behavior of aircraft surface panels in hypersonic airflow has been developed and presented for the first time. Von Karman large deflection plate theory is used for description of the structural nonlinearity and third order piston theory is employed to account for the aerodynamic nonlinearity. The thermal loadings of uniformly distributed temperature and temperature gradients across the panel thickness are incorporated into the finite element formulation. By applying the modal reduction technique, the number of governing equations of motion is reduced dramatically so that the computational time of direct numerical integration is dropped significantly. All possible types of panel behavior, including flat, buckled but dynamically stable, limit cycle oscillation (LCO), periodic motion, and chaotic motion can be observed and analyzed. As examples of the applications of the proposed methodology, flutter responses of isotropic, specially orthotropic and laminated composite panels are investigated. Special emphasis is put on the boundary between LCO and chaos, as well as the routes to chaos. A systematic mode filtering procedure that helps mode selection without specific knowledge of the complex mode shapes is presented and illustrated. Influences of aerodynamic parameters, including aerodynamic damping and Mach number, on the panel flutter responses are studied. The importance of nonlinear aerodynamic terms is examined in detail. The supporting conditions and panel aspect ratio on the onset condition of chaos are also investigated as an illustration of optimization among different design options. Several mathematical tools, including the time history, phase plane plot, Poincaré map, and bifurcation diagram are employed in the chaos study. The largest Lyapunov exponent is also evaluated to assist in detection of chaos. It is found that at low or moderately high nondimensional dynamic pressures, the fluttering panel typically takes a period-doubling route to evolve into chaos, whereas at high nondimensional dynamic pressure, the route to chaos generally involves bursts of chaos and rejuvenations of periodic motions. Various bifurcation behaviors, such as the Hopf bifurcation, pitchfork bifurcation, and transcritical bifurcation, are observed. On the basis of the successful applications presented, the proposed finite element time domain modal formulation and the mode filtering procedure have proven to be an efficient and practical design tool for designers of hypersonic vehicle

With proud and satisfaction we welcomed over 180 persons from 31 countries all over the world. They decided to share the results of their research and many years experiences in a discipline of dynamical systems by submitting many very interesting papers. This year, the DSTA Conference Proceedings were split into three volumes entitled “Dynamical Systems” with respective subtitles: Vibration, Control and Stability of Dynamical Systems; Mathematical and Numerical Aspects of Dynamical System Analysis and Engineering Dynamics and Life Sciences. Additionally, there will be also published two volumes of Springer Proceedings in Mathematics and Statistics entitled “Dynamical Systems in Theoretical Perspective” and “Dynamical Systems in Applications”

    Shape Memory Alloy Applications on Control of Thermal Buckling, Panel Flutter and Random Vibration of Composite Panels

    Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) has a unique ability to recover large prestrain (up to 8∼10% elongation for Nitinol, a typical SMA material) completely when the alloy is heated (e.g. aerodynamic heating) above the austenite finish temperature Af. An innovative concept is to utilize the large recovery stress by embedding the prestrained SMA in a traditional fiber-reinforced laminated composite plate, which is called SMA hybrid composite (SMAHC) plate. In this research, static thermal and aerothermal deflections, dynamic panel flutter and random response are investigated for traditional composite plates and SMAHC plates under combined aerodynamic, random and thermal loads by employing nonlinear finite element method. System equations are derived and based on classical laminated plate theory, von Karman nonlinear strain-displacement relation, first-order piston theory aerodynamics and quasi-steady thermal stress theory. Newton-Raphson iterative method is adopted for solving the static thermal and aerothermal buckling deflections. Both normal modes and new proposed aeroelastic modes are employed separately in solution procedures to transform the equations of motion in structural node degree-of-freedom (DOF) into modal equations of motion. Time domain numerical integration technique is adopted for the dynamic analysis under the combined aerodynamic, random and thermal loads. Numerical results of isotropic, traditional composite plates and SMAHC plates are determined, compared and discussed. Various plate behaviors are studied in detail. It is demonstrated that SMAHC plates can greatly suppress or reduce thermal buckling and panel flutter as compared with the traditional composite plates. While the SMAHC plates exhibit better performance at low levels of acoustic excitations, however, the SMAHC plates do not effectively suppress random response at high levels of acoustic excitations

    Ultrasonically-assisted drilling of carbon fibre-reinforced plastics

    Carbon fibre-reinforced plastics (CFRP) are widely used in aerospace, automobile and other structural applications due to their superior mechanical and physical properties. CFRP outperform conventional metals in high strength-to-weight ratio. Usually, CFRP parts are manufactured near to net-shape;however,machining is unavoidable when it comes to assembly. Drilling the holes are essential to facilitate riveting and bolting of the components. However, conventional drilling (CD) induces different types of damages such as cracking, fibre pull-out, sprintling and delamination due to the abrasive nature, inhomogeneity and anisotropy of CFRP. A novel technique, ultrasonically-assisted drilling (UAD) is hybrid machining technique in which highfrequency (typically above 20 kHz) vibration are superimposed on a standard twist drill bit in axial direction using ultrasonic transducer. UAD has shown several advantages such as thrust force reduction, improving surface quality and lower bur-formation in drilling of conventional metals. UAD has also effectively been used for drilling brittle materials. [Continues.
