    An obstruction to Delaunay triangulations in Riemannian manifolds

    Delaunay has shown that the Delaunay complex of a finite set of points PP of Euclidean space Rm\mathbb{R}^m triangulates the convex hull of PP, provided that PP satisfies a mild genericity property. Voronoi diagrams and Delaunay complexes can be defined for arbitrary Riemannian manifolds. However, Delaunay's genericity assumption no longer guarantees that the Delaunay complex will yield a triangulation; stronger assumptions on PP are required. A natural one is to assume that PP is sufficiently dense. Although results in this direction have been claimed, we show that sample density alone is insufficient to ensure that the Delaunay complex triangulates a manifold of dimension greater than 2.Comment: This is a revision and extension of a note that appeared as an appendix in the (otherwise unpublished) report arXiv:1303.649

    Constructing Intrinsic Delaunay Triangulations of Submanifolds

    We describe an algorithm to construct an intrinsic Delaunay triangulation of a smooth closed submanifold of Euclidean space. Using results established in a companion paper on the stability of Delaunay triangulations on δ\delta-generic point sets, we establish sampling criteria which ensure that the intrinsic Delaunay complex coincides with the restricted Delaunay complex and also with the recently introduced tangential Delaunay complex. The algorithm generates a point set that meets the required criteria while the tangential complex is being constructed. In this way the computation of geodesic distances is avoided, the runtime is only linearly dependent on the ambient dimension, and the Delaunay complexes are guaranteed to be triangulations of the manifold

    Only distances are required to reconstruct submanifolds

    In this paper, we give the first algorithm that outputs a faithful reconstruction of a submanifold of Euclidean space without maintaining or even constructing complicated data structures such as Voronoi diagrams or Delaunay complexes. Our algorithm uses the witness complex and relies on the stability of power protection, a notion introduced in this paper. The complexity of the algorithm depends exponentially on the intrinsic dimension of the manifold, rather than the dimension of ambient space, and linearly on the dimension of the ambient space. Another interesting feature of this work is that no explicit coordinates of the points in the point sample is needed.     Towards Persistence-Based Reconstruction in Euclidean Spaces

    Manifold reconstruction has been extensively studied for the last decade or so, especially in two and three dimensions. Recently, significant improvements were made in higher dimensions, leading to new methods to reconstruct large classes of compact subsets of Euclidean space Rd\R^d. However, the complexities of these methods scale up exponentially with d, which makes them impractical in medium or high dimensions, even for handling low-dimensional submanifolds. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach that stands in-between classical reconstruction and topological estimation, and whose complexity scales up with the intrinsic dimension of the data. Specifically, when the data points are sufficiently densely sampled from a smooth mm-submanifold of Rd\R^d, our method retrieves the homology of the submanifold in time at most c(m)n5c(m)n^5, where nn is the size of the input and c(m)c(m) is a constant depending solely on mm. It can also provably well handle a wide range of compact subsets of Rd\R^d, though with worse complexities. Along the way to proving the correctness of our algorithm, we obtain new results on \v{C}ech, Rips, and witness complex filtrations in Euclidean spaces

    Reconstructing Geometric Structures from Combinatorial and Metric Information

    In this dissertation, we address three reconstruction problems. First, we address the problem of reconstructing a Delaunay triangulation from a maximal planar graph. A maximal planar graph G is Delaunay realizable if there exists a realization of G as a Delaunay triangulation on the plane. Several classes of graphs with particular graph-theoretic properties are known to be Delaunay realizable. One such class of graphs is outerplanar graph. In this dissertation, we present a new proof that an outerplanar graph is Delaunay realizable. Given a convex polyhedron P and a point s on the surface (the source), the ridge tree or cut locus is a collection of points with multiple shortest paths from s on the surface of P. If we compute the shortest paths from s to all polyhedral vertices of P and cut the surface along these paths, we obtain a planar polygon called the shortest path star (sp-star) unfolding. It is known that for any convex polyhedron and a source point, the ridge tree is contained in the sp-star unfolding polygon [8]. Given a combinatorial structure of a ridge tree, we show how to construct the ridge tree and the sp-star unfolding in which it lies. In this process, we address several problems concerning the existence of sp-star unfoldings on specified source point sets. Finally, we introduce and study a new variant of the sp-star unfolding called (geodesic) star unfolding. In this unfolding, we cut the surface of the convex polyhedron along a set of non-crossing geodesics (not-necessarily the shortest). We study its properties and address its realization problem. Finally, we consider the following problem: given a geodesic star unfolding of some convex polyhedron and a source point, how can we derive the sp-star unfolding of the same polyhedron and the source point? We introduce a new algorithmic operation and perform experiments using that operation on a large number of geodesic star unfolding polygons. Experimental data provides strong evidence that the successive applications of this operation on geodesic star unfoldings will lead us to the sp-star unfolding

    Approximating Local Homology from Samples

    Recently, multi-scale notions of local homology (a variant of persistent homology) have been used to study the local structure of spaces around a given point from a point cloud sample. Current reconstruction guarantees rely on constructing embedded complexes which become difficult in high dimensions. We show that the persistence diagrams used for estimating local homology, can be approximated using families of Vietoris-Rips complexes, whose simple constructions are robust in any dimension. To the best of our knowledge, our results, for the first time, make applications based on local homology, such as stratification learning, feasible in high dimensions.Comment: 23 pages, 14 figure

    Persistent homology to analyse 3D faces and assess body weight gain

    In this paper, we analyse patterns in face shape variation due to weight gain. We propose the use of persistent homology descriptors to get geometric and topological information about the configuration of anthropometric 3D face landmarks. In this way, evaluating face changes boils down to comparing the descriptors computed on 3D face scans taken at different times. By applying dimensionality reduction techniques to the dissimilarity matrix of descriptors, we get a space in which each face is a point and face shape variations are encoded as trajectories in that space. Our results show that persistent homology is able to identify features which are well related to overweight and may help assessing individual weight trends. The research was carried out in the context of the European project SEMEOTICONS, which developed a multisensory platform which detects and monitors over time facial signs of cardio-metabolic risk

    Bregman Voronoi diagrams

    A preliminary version appeared in the 18th ACM-SIAM Symposium on Discrete Algorithms, pp. 746- 755, 2007International audienceThe Voronoi diagram of a finite set of objects is a fundamental geometric structure that subdivides the embedding space into regions, each region consisting of the points that are closer to a given object than to the others. We may define various variants of Voronoi diagrams depending on the class of objects, the distance function and the embedding space. In this paper, we investigate a framework for defining and building Voronoi diagrams for a broad class of distance functions called Bregman divergences. Bregman divergences include not only the traditional (squared) Euclidean distance but also various divergence measures based on entropic functions. Accordingly, Bregman Voronoi diagrams allow one to define information-theoretic Voronoi diagrams in sta- tistical parametric spaces based on the relative entropy of distributions. We define several types of Bregman diagrams, establish correspondences between those diagrams (using the Legendre transformation), and show how to compute them efficiently. We also introduce extensions of these diagrams, e.g. k-order and k-bag Bregman Voronoi diagrams, and introduce Bregman triangulations of a set of points and their connection with Bregman Voronoi diagrams. We show that these triangulations capture many of the properties of the celebrated Delaunay triangulation
