    Making and breaking power laws in evolutionary algorithm population dynamics

    Deepening our understanding of the characteristics and behaviors of population-based search algorithms remains an important ongoing challenge in Evolutionary Computation. To date however, most studies of Evolutionary Algorithms have only been able to take place within tightly restricted experimental conditions. For instance, many analytical methods can only be applied to canonical algorithmic forms or can only evaluate evolution over simple test functions. Analysis of EA behavior under more complex conditions is needed to broaden our understanding of this population-based search process. This paper presents an approach to analyzing EA behavior that can be applied to a diverse range of algorithm designs and environmental conditions. The approach is based on evaluating an individual’s impact on population dynamics using metrics derived from genealogical graphs.\ud From experiments conducted over a broad range of conditions, some important conclusions are drawn in this study. First, it is determined that very few individuals in an EA population have a significant influence on future population dynamics with the impact size fitting a power law distribution. The power law distribution indicates there is a non-negligible probability that single individuals will dominate the entire population, irrespective of population size. Two EA design features are however found to cause strong changes to this aspect of EA behavior: i) the population topology and ii) the introduction of completely new individuals. If the EA population topology has a long path length or if new (i.e. historically uncoupled) individuals are continually inserted into the population, then power law deviations are observed for large impact sizes. It is concluded that such EA designs can not be dominated by a small number of individuals and hence should theoretically be capable of exhibiting higher degrees of parallel search behavior

    Hierarchical Crossover and Probability Landscapes of Genetic Operators

    The time evolution of a simple model for crossover is discussed. A variant of this model with an improved exploration behavior in phase space is derived as a subset of standard one- and multi-point crossover operations. This model is solved analytically in the flat fitness case. Numerical simulations compare the way of phase space exploration of different genetic operators. In the case of a non-flat fitness landscape, numerical solutions of the evolution equations point out ways to estimate premature convergence.Comment: 11 pages, uuencoded postcript fil

    Multi-agent system for dynamic manufacturing system optimization

    This paper deals with the application of multi-agent system concept for optimization of dynamic uncertain process. These problems are known to have a computationally demanding objective function, which could turn to be infeasible when large problems are considered. Therefore, fast approximations to the objective function are required. This paper employs bundle of intelligent systems algorithms tied together in a multi-agent system. In order to demonstrate the system, a metal reheat furnace scheduling problem is adopted for highly demanded optimization problem. The proposed multi-agent approach has been evaluated for different settings of the reheat furnace scheduling problem. Particle Swarm Optimization, Genetic Algorithm with different classic and advanced versions: GA with chromosome differentiation, Age GA, and Sexual GA, and finally a Mimetic GA, which is based on combining the GA as a global optimizer and the PSO as a local optimizer.     A computational model of evolution: haploidy versus diploidy

    In this paper, the study of diploidy is introduced like and important mechanism for memory reinforcement in artificial environments where adaptation is very important. The individuals of this ecosystem are able to genetically "learn" the best behaviour for survival. Critical changes, happening in the environmental conditions, require the presence of diploidy to ensure the survival of species. By means of new gene-dominance configurations, a way to shield the individuals from erroneous selection is provided. These two concepts appear like important elements for artificial systems which have to evolve in environments with some degree of instability.Publicad
