Meta-heuristic algorithms for optimized network flow wavelet-based image coding

    Get PDF
Optimal multipath selection to maximize the received multiple description coding (MDCs) in a lossy network model is proposed. Multiple description scalar quantization (MDSQ) has been applied to the wavelet coefficients of a color image to generate the MDCs which are combating transmission loss over lossy networks. In the networks, each received description raises the reconstruction quality of an MDC-coded signal (image, audio or video). In terms of maximizing the received descriptions, a greater number of optimal routings between source and destination must be obtained. The rainbow network flow (RNF) collaborated with effective meta-heuristic algorithms is a good approach to resolve it. Two meta-heuristic algorithms which are genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) have been utilized to solve the multi-objective optimization routing problem for finding optimal routings each of which is assigned as a distinct color by RNF to maximize the coded descriptions in a network model. By employing a local search based priority encoding method, each individual in GA and particle in PSO is represented as a potential solution. The proposed algorithms are compared with the multipath Dijkstra algorithm (MDA) for both finding optimal paths and providing reliable multimedia communication. The simulations run over various random network topologies and the results show that the PSO algorithm finds optimal routings effectively and maximizes the received MDCs with assistance of RNF, leading to reduce packet loss and increase throughput

Synthetic biology builds upon genetics, molecular biology, and metabolic engineering by applying engineering principles to the design of biological systems. When designing a synthetic system, synthetic biologists need to exchange information about multiple types of molecules, the intended behavior of the system, and actual experimental measurements. The Synthetic Biology Open Language (SBOL) has been developed as a standard to support the specification and exchange of biological design information in synthetic biology, following an open community process involving both wet bench scientists and dry scientific modelers and software developers, across academia, industry, and other institutions. This document describes SBOL 3.0.0, which condenses and simplifies previous versions of SBOL based on experiences in deployment across a variety of scientific and industrial settings. In particular, SBOL 3.0.0, (1) separates sequence features from part/sub-part relationships, (2) renames Component Definition/Component to Component/Sub-Component, (3) merges Component and Module classes, (4) ensures consistency between data model and ontology terms, (5) extends the means to define and reference Sub-Components, (6) refines requirements on object URIs, (7) enables graph-based serialization, (8) moves Systems Biology Ontology (SBO) for Component types, (9) makes all sequence associations explicit, (10) makes interfaces explicit, (11) generalizes Sequence Constraints into a general structural Constraint class, and (12) expands the set of allowed constraints

Overcoming Atmospheric Effects in Quantum Cryptography

Quantum Computers will have the potential to greatly assist us in problems such as searching, optimization and even drug discovery. Unfortunately, among these newfound capabilities is one which allows one to break RSA encryption in orders of magnitude less time. One promising countermeasure to secure our communication today and in the future is the one time pad, although it is very difficult to generate and distribute. Quantum Key Distribution offers a practical method for two authenticated parties to generate a key. Whereby the parties, Alice and Bob, share quantum states and use physical laws to place an upper bound on the information an eavesdropper could possibly have. QKD has matured tremendously since it was proposed in 1984, but gaps still remain between the device models used in security proofs and what can be achieved in deployments. In particular, the atmosphere presents a challenging environment for QKD, and due to the wireless nature of communications today, we cannot avoid it. QKD must be robust to atmospheric loss as well as transmittance fluctuation due to turbulence. In this dissertation, I perform an experiment to make the BB84 protocol more resilient by monitoring the transmittance of a channel and finding time periods where the transmittance is low, hence error rate is high and discard data collected during such timeframes. We conduct an experiment to test Hong Ou Mandel visibility, which is at the heart of Measurement Device Independent QKD, by varying the detector parameters and the photons\u27 level of identity. I use an observation where we find that the interference effect is highly dependent on the similarity of photon numbers at the measurer\u27s beamsplitter to develop a scheme in MDI QKD where the key rate is kept high through tethering the transmittance fluctuations of Alice and Bob\u27s channels with dynamic attenuation. The results show an improved robustness when in a turbulent atmosphere, even when accounting for nonzero minimum loss

The tremendous expansion of telecommunication services in the past decade, in part due to the growth of the Internet, has made the development of high-bandwidth optical net-works a focus of research interest. The implementation of Dense-Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) optical fiber transmission systems has the potential to meet this demand. However, crucial components of DWDM networks – add/drop multiplexers, filters, gain equalizers as well as interconnects between optical channels – are currently not implemented as dynamically reconfigurable devices. Electronic cross-connects, the traditional solution to the reconfigurable optical networks, are increasingly not feasible due to the rapidly increasing bandwidth of the optical channels. Thus, optically transparent, dynamically reconfigurable DWDM components are important for alleviating the bottleneck in telecommunication systems of the future. In this study, we develop a promising class of Opto-VLSI based devices, including a dynamic multi-function WDM processor, combining the functions of optical filter, channel equalizer and add-drop multiplexer, as well as a reconfigurable optical power splitter. We review the technological options for all optical WDM components and compare their advantages and disadvantages. We develop a model for designing Opto-VLSI based WDM devices, and demonstrate experimentally the Opto-VLSI multi-function WDM device. Finally, we discuss the feasibility of Opto-VLSI WDM components in meeting the stringent requirements of the optical communications industry

This thesis describes the approach and results of the research to create a TRIZ based computer aided innovation tools (AEGIS and Design for Wow). This research has mainly been based around two tools created under this research: called AEGIS (Accelerated Evolutionary Graphics Interface System), and Design for Wow. Both of these tools are discussed in this thesis in detail, along with the test data, design methodology, test cases, and research. Design for Wow (http://www.designforwow.com) is an attempt to summarize the successful inventions/ designs from all over the world on a web portal which has multiple capabilities. These designs/innovations are then linked to the TRIZ Principles in order to determine whether innovative aspects of these successful innovations are fully covered by the forty TRIZ principles. In Design for Wow, a framework is created which is implemented through a review tool. The Design for Wow website includes this tool which has been used by researcher and the users of the site and reviewers to analyse the uploaded data in terms of strength of TRIZ Principles linked to them. AEGIS (Accelerated Evolutionary Graphics Interface System) is a software tool developed under this research aimed to help the graphic designers to make innovative graphic designs. Again it uses the forty TRIZ Principles as a set of guiding rules in the software. AEGIS creates graphic design prototypes according to the user input and uses TRIZ Principles framework as a guide to generate innovative graphic design samples. The AEGIS tool created is based on TRIZ Principles discussed in Chapter 3 (a subset of them). In AEGIS, the TRIZ Principles are used to create innovative graphic design effects. The literature review on innovative graphic design (in chapter 3) has been analysed for links with TRIZ Principles and then the DNA of AEGIS has been built on the basis of this study. Results from various surveys/ questionnaires indicated were used to collect the innovative graphic design samples and then TRIZ was mapped to it (see section 3.2). The TRIZ effects were mapped to the basic graphic design elements and the anatomy of the graphic design letters was studied to analyse the TRIZ effects in the collected samples. This study was used to build the TRIZ based AEGIS tool. Hence, AEGIS tool applies the innovative effects using TRIZ to basic graphic design elements (as described in section 3.3). the working of AEGIS is designed based on Genetic Algorithms coded specifically to implement TRIZ Principles specialized for Graphic Design, chapter 4 discusses the process followed to apply TRIZ Principles to graphic design and coding them using Genetic Algorithms, hence resulting in AEGIS tool. Similarly, in Design for Wow, the content uploaded has been analysed for its link with TRIZ Principles (see section 3.1 for TRIZ Principles). The tool created in Design for Wow is based on the framework of analysing the TRIZ links in the uploaded content. The ‘Wow’ concept discussed in the section 5.1 and 5.2 is the basis of the concept of Design for Wow website, whereby the users upload the content they classify as ‘Wow’. This content then is further analysed for the ‘Wow factor’ and then mapped to TRIZ Principles as TRIZ tagging methodology is framed (section 5.5). From the results of the research, it appears that the TRIZ Principles are a comprehensive set of innovation basic building blocks. Some surveys suggest that amongst other tools, TRIZ Principles were the first choice and used most .They have thus the potential of being used in other innovation domains, to help in their analysis, understanding and potential development.Great Western Research and Systematic Innovation Ltd U

Predictive model for breast cancer sub-stage classification

Prediction accuracy of sub-stage classification varies with different staging methods of breast-cancer. In this Master’s thesis we investigate whether there are differences in the performance of machine learning models across different stages in two different staging systems with three different sets of RNA_Seq data for predicting the sub-stage of breast-cancer. We applied Support Vector Machine method to classify the sub-stage of Surveillance, epidemiology and End Results and Tumor, Node and Metastasis staging system. We carried out tests to see whether the model performance differs in both the staging systems. We also used three different data sets with prior feature selection and investigated the performance of the model in both staging systems with different combinations of sub-stages. To make the performance result more accurate we used cross-validation with performance metric accuracy, sensitivity and specificity. In order to ensure the classifiers` ability of prediction we used three performance metric precisions, recall and F1 score. Finally, we compared the results between the two staging systems and investigated whether protein coding or non-coding RNA gives a better performance. We applied the principle component analysis to reduce the dimensionality and investigate the performance. Our results show that micro-RNAs give a better classification in both staging systems
