    Railway Timetable Optimization

    In this cumulative dissertation, we study several aspects of railway timetable optimization. The first contributions cover Practical Applications of Automatic Railway Timetabling. In particular, for the problem of simultaneously scheduling all freight trains in Germany such that there are no conflicts between them, we propose a novel column generation approach. Each train can choose from an iteratively growing set of possible routes and times, so called slots. For the task of choosing maximally many slots without conflicts, we present and apply the heuristic algorithm Conflict Resolving (CR). With these two methods, we are able to schedule more than 5000 trains simultaneously, exceeding the scopes of other studies. A second practical application that we study is measuring the capacity increase in the railway network when equipping freight trains with electro-pneumatic brakes and middle buffer couplings. Methodically, we propose to explicitly construct as many slots as possible for such trains and measure the capacity as the number of constructed slots. Furthermore, we contribute to the field of Algorithms and Computability in Timetable Generation. We present two heuristic solution algorithms for the Maximum Satisfiability Problem (MaxSAT). In the literature, it has been proposed to encode different NP-complete problems that occur in railway timetabling in MaxSAT. In numerical experiments, we prove that our algorithms are competitive to state-of-the-art MaxSAT solvers. Moreover, we study the parameterized complexity status of periodic scheduling and give proofs that the problem is NP-complete for input graphs of bounded treewidth, branchwidth and carvingwidth. Finally, we propose a framework for analyzing Delay Propagation in Railway Networks. More precisely, we develop delay transmission rules based on different correlation measures that can be derived from historical operations data. What is more, we apply SHAP values from Explainable AI to the problem of discerning primary delays that occur stochastically in the operations, to secondary follow-up delays. Transmission rules that are derived from the secondary delays indicate where timetable adjustments are needed. In our last contribution in this field, we apply such adjustment rules for black-box optimization of timetables in a simulation environment

    On the computational tractability of a geographic clustering problem arising in redistricting

    Redistricting is the problem of dividing a state into a number kk of regions, called districts. Voters in each district elect a representative. The primary criteria are: each district is connected, district populations are equal (or nearly equal), and districts are "compact". There are multiple competing definitions of compactness, usually minimizing some quantity. One measure that has been recently promoted by Duchin and others is number of cut edges. In redistricting, one is given atomic regions out of which each district must be built. The populations of the atomic regions are given. Consider the graph with one vertex per atomic region (with weight equal to the region's population) and an edge between atomic regions that share a boundary. A districting plan is a partition of vertices into kk parts, each connnected, of nearly equal weight. The districts are considered compact to the extent that the plan minimizes the number of edges crossing between different parts. Consider two problems: find the most compact districting plan, and sample districting plans under a compactness constraint uniformly at random. Both problems are NP-hard so we restrict the input graph to have branchwidth at most ww. (A planar graph's branchwidth is bounded by its diameter.) If both kk and ww are bounded by constants, the problems are solvable in polynomial time. Assume vertices have weight~1. One would like algorithms whose running times are of the form O(f(k,w)nc)O(f(k,w) n^c) for some constant cc independent of kk and ww, in which case the problems are said to be fixed-parameter tractable with respect to kk and ww). We show that, under a complexity-theoretic assumption, no such algorithms exist. However, we do give algorithms with running time O(cwnk+1)O(c^wn^{k+1}). Thus if the diameter of the graph is moderately small and the number of districts is very small, our algorithm is useable

    The role of twins in computing planar supports of hypergraphs

    A support or realization of a hypergraph HH is a graph GG on the same vertex as HH such that for each hyperedge of HH it holds that its vertices induce a connected subgraph of GG. The NP-hard problem of finding a planar} support has applications in hypergraph drawing and network design. Previous algorithms for the problem assume that twins}---pairs of vertices that are in precisely the same hyperedges---can safely be removed from the input hypergraph. We prove that this assumption is generally wrong, yet that the number of twins necessary for a hypergraph to have a planar support only depends on its number of hyperedges. We give an explicit upper bound on the number of twins necessary for a hypergraph with mm hyperedges to have an rr-outerplanar support, which depends only on rr and mm. Since all additional twins can be safely removed, we obtain a linear-time algorithm for computing rr-outerplanar supports for hypergraphs with mm hyperedges if mm and rr are constant; in other words, the problem is fixed-parameter linear-time solvable with respect to the parameters mm and rr

    On the Computational Tractability of a Geographic Clustering Problem Arising in Redistricting

    Redistricting is the problem of dividing up a state into a given number k of regions (called districts) where the voters in each district are to elect a representative. The three primary criteria are: that each district be connected, that the populations of the districts be equal (or nearly equal), and that the districts are "compact". There are multiple competing definitions of compactness, usually minimizing some quantity. One measure that has been recently been used is number of cut edges. In this formulation of redistricting, one is given atomic regions out of which each district must be built (e.g., in the U.S., census blocks). The populations of the atomic regions are given. Consider the graph with one vertex per atomic region and an edge between atomic regions with a shared boundary of positive length. Define the weight of a vertex to be the population of the corresponding region. A districting plan is a partition of vertices into k pieces so that the parts have nearly equal weights and each part is connected. The districts are considered compact to the extent that the plan minimizes the number of edges crossing between different parts. There are two natural computational problems: find the most compact districting plan, and sample districting plans (possibly under a compactness constraint) uniformly at random. Both problems are NP-hard so we consider restricting the input graph to have branchwidth at most w. (A planar graph’s branchwidth is bounded, for example, by its diameter.) If both k and w are bounded by constants, the problems are solvable in polynomial time. In this paper, we give lower and upper bounds that characterize the complexity of these problems in terms of parameters k and w. For simplicity of notation, assume that each vertex has unit weight. We would ideally like algorithms whose running times are of the form O(f(k,w) n^c) for some constant c independent of k and w (in which case the problems are said to be fixed-parameter tractable with respect to those parameters). We show that, under standard complexity-theoretic assumptions, no such algorithms exist. However, the problems are fixed-parameter tractable with respect to each of these parameters individually: there exist algorithms with running times of the form O(f(k) n^{O(w)}) and O(f(w) n^{k+1}). The first result was previously known. The new one, however, is more relevant to the application to redistricting, at least for coarse instances. Indeed, we have implemented a version of the algorithm and have used to successfully find optimally compact solutions to all redistricting instances for France (except Paris, which operates under different rules) under various population-balance constraints. For these instances, the values for w are modest and the values for k are very small

    Integer programming models for the branchwidth problem

    We consider the problem of computing the branchwidth and an optimal branch decomposition of a graph. Branch decompositions and branchwidth were introduced in 1991 by Robertson and Seymour and were used in the proof of Graph Minors Theorem (GMT), a well known conjecture (Wagner's conjecture) in graph theory. The notions of branchwidth and branch decompositions have been proved to be useful for solving many NP-hard problems that have applications in fields such as graph theory, network design, sensor networks and biology. Branch decompositions have been utilized for problems such as the traveling salesman problem by Cook and Seymour, general minor containment and the branchwidth problem by Hicks by means of the relevant branch decomposition-based algorithms. Branch decomposition-based algorithms are fixed parameter tractable algorithms obtained by combining dynamic programming techniques with branch decompositions. The running time and space of these algorithms strongly depend on the width of the utilized branch decomposition. Thus, finding optimal or close to optimal branch decompositions is very important for the efficiency of the branch decomposition-based algorithms. Motivated by the vastness of the fields of application, we aim to increase the efficiency of the branch decomposition-based algorithms by investigating effective techniques to find optimal branch decompositions. We present three integer programming models for the branchwidth problem. Two similar formulations are based on the relationship of branchwidth problem with a special case of the Steiner tree packing problem. The third formulation is based on the notion of laminar separations. We utilize upper and lower bounds obtained by heuristic algorithms, reduction techniques and cutting planes to increase the efficiency of our models. We use all three models for the branchwidth problem on hypergraphs as well. We compare the performance of three models both on graphs and hypergraphs. Furthermore we use the third model for rank-width problem and also offer a heuristic for finding good rank decompositions. We provide computational results for this problem, which can be a basis of comparison for future formulations

    A SAT approach to branchwidth

    Branch decomposition is a prominent method for structurally decomposing a graph, a hypergraph, or a propositional formula in conjunctive normal form. The width of a branch decomposition provides a measure of how well the object is decomposed. For many applications, it is crucial to computing a branch decomposition whose width is as small as possible. We propose an approach based on Boolean Satisfiability (SAT) to finding branch decompositions of small width. The core of our approach is an efficient SAT encoding that determines with a single SAT-call whether a given hypergraph admits a branch decomposition of a certain width. For our encoding, we propose a natural partition-based characterization of branch decompositions. The encoding size imposes a limit on the size of the given hypergraph. To break through this barrier and to scale the SAT approach to larger instances, we develop a new heuristic approach where the SAT encoding is used to locally improve a given candidate decomposition until a fixed-point is reached. This new SAT-based local improvement method scales now to instances with several thousands of vertices and edges
