Inferring the function of genes from synthetic lethal mutations
Techniques for detecting synthetic lethal mutations in double gene deletion experiments are emerging as powerful tool for analysing genes in parallel or overlapping pathways with a shared function. This paper introduces a logic-based approach that uses synthetic lethal mutations for mapping genes of unknown function to enzymes in a known metabolic network. We show how such mappings can be automatically computed by a logical learning system called eXtended Hybrid Abductive Inductive Learning (XHAIL)
Dynamical generation of gauge and Higgs bosons in N=2 supersymmetric non-linear sigma-models
A four-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric non-linear sigma-model with the
Eguchi-Hanson (ALE) target space and a non-vanishing central charge is
rewritten to a classically equivalent and formally renormalizable gauged
`linear' sigma-model over a non-compact coset space in N=2 harmonic superspace
by making use of an N=2 vector gauge superfield as the Lagrange multiplier. It
is then demonstrated that the N=2 vector gauge multiplet becomes dynamical
after taking into account one-loop corrections due to quantized
hypermultiplets. This implies the appearance of a composite gauge boson, a
composite chiral spinor doublet and a composite complex Higgs particle, all
defined as the physical states associated with the propagating N=2 vector gauge
superfield. The composite N=2 vector multiplet is further identified with the
zero modes of a superstring ending on a D-6-brane. Some non-perturbative
phenomena, such as the gauge symmetry enhancement for coincident D-6-branes and
the Maldacena conjecture, turn out to be closely related to our NLSM via
M-theory. Our results support a conjecture about the composite nature of
superstrings ending on D-branes.Comment: 43 pages, LaTeX, 3 figures, macros include

Computer-aided analysis of concurrent systems
The introduction of concurrency into programs has added to the complexity of the software design process. This is most evident in the design of communications protocols where concurrency is inherent to the behavior of the system. The complexity exhibited by such software systems makes more evident the needs for computer-aided tools for automatically analyzing behavior. The Distributed Systems project at UCI has been developing a suite of tools, based on Petri nets, which support the design and evaluation of concurrent software systems. This paper focuses attention on one of the tools: the reachability graph analyzer (RGA). This tool provides mechanisms for proving general system properties (e.g., deadlock-freeness) as well as system-specific properties. The tool is sufficiently general to allow a user to apply complex user-defined analysis algorithms to reachability graphs. The alternating-bit protocol with a bounded channel is used to demonstrate the power of the tool and to point to future extensions
Combustion gas properties of various fuels of interest to gas turbine engineers
A series of computations were made using the gas property computational schemes of Gordon and McBride to compute the gas properties and species concentration of ASTM-Jet A and dry air. The computed gas thermodynamic properties in a revised graphical format which gives information which is useful to combustion engineers is presented. A series of reports covering the properties of many fuel and air combinations will be published. The graphical presentation displays on one chart of the output of hundreds of computer sheets. The reports will contain microfiche cards, from which complete tables and graphs can be obtained. The extent of the planned effort and is documented samples of the many tables and charts that will be available on the microfiche cards are presented
