Insertion of random spaces in time domain for frequency hopping sequences for RF systems
Improvements over the communications protocols are always a continuous research. Fast Frequency Hopping is an important method still in use and orthogonal codes used in SFH-CDMA are the special interest in several areas of technology. This research uses one coincident orthogonal code with restrictive adjacent spectral distance for the design of RF correlation detectors based on planar resonators arrays. Inclusion of uniform time delays sections between adjacent resonators is a well-known method to improve the MAI, at expenses of decrease the data rate and finally the bandwidth of protocol. Another strategy is selecting random delays between symbols in the way of adjacent peaks in cross correlation function vanishes, improving the dynamic range of asynchronous detector and accordingly the user number sharing the channel of communications
Advanced optical modulation and fast reconfigurable en/decoding techniques for OCDMA application
With the explosive growth of bandwidth requirement in optical fiber communication
networks, optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) has witnessed tremendous
achievements as one of the promising technologies for optical access networks over the
past decades. In an OCDMA system, optical code processing is one of the key
techniques. Rapid optical code reconfiguration can improve flexibility and security of
the OCDMA system. This thesis focuses on advanced optical modulations and
en/decoding techniques for applications in fast reconfigurable OCDMA systems and
secure optical communications.
A novel time domain spectral phase encoding (SPE) scheme which can rapidly
reconfigure the optical code and is compatible with conventional spectral domain phase
en/decoding by using a pair of dispersive devices and a high speed phase modulator is
proposed. Based on this scheme, a novel advanced modulation technique that can
simultaneously generate both the optical code and the differential-phase-shift-keying
(DPSK) data using a single phase modulator is experimentally demonstrated. A
symmetric time domain spectral phase encoding and decoding (SPE/SPD) scheme using
a similar setup for both the transmitter and receiver is further proposed, based on which
a bit-by-bit optical code scrambling and DPSK data modulation technique for secure
optical communications has been successfully demonstrated. By combining optical
encoding and optical steganography, a novel approach for secure transmission of time
domain spectral phase encoded on-off-keying (OOK)/DPSK-OCDMA signal over
public wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) network has also been proposed and
demonstrated.
To enable high speed operation of the time domain SPE/SPD scheme and enhance the
system security, a rapid programmable, code-length variable bit-by-bit optical code
shifting technique is proposed. Based on this technique, security improvements for
OOK/DPSK OCDMA systems at data rates of 10Gb/s and 40Gb/s using reconfigurable
optical codes of up to 1024-chip have been achieved.
Finally, a novel tunable two-dimensional coherent optical en/decoder which can
simultaneously perform wavelength hopping and spectral phase encoding based on
coupled micro-ring resonator is proposed and theoretically investigated. The techniques
included in this thesis could be potentially used for future fast reconfigurable and secure
optical code based communication systems
Applications of satellite technology to broadband ISDN networks
Two satellite architectures for delivering broadband integrated services digital network (B-ISDN) service are evaluated. The first is assumed integral to an existing terrestrial network, and provides complementary services such as interconnects to remote nodes as well as high-rate multicast and broadcast service. The interconnects are at a 155 Mbs rate and are shown as being met with a nonregenerative multibeam satellite having 10-1.5 degree spots. The second satellite architecture focuses on providing private B-ISDN networks as well as acting as a gateway to the public network. This is conceived as being provided by a regenerative multibeam satellite with on-board ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) processing payload. With up to 800 Mbs offered, higher satellite EIRP is required. This is accomplished with 12-0.4 degree hopping beams, covering a total of 110 dwell positions. It is estimated the space segment capital cost for architecture one would be about 250M. The net user cost is given for a variety of scenarios, but the cost for 155 Mbs services is shown to be about $15-22/minute for 25 percent system utilization

This is followed by a basic discussion of how information is derived from the radar echo and how the raw information can be used to increase understanding of the solar system. A moderately detailed description of the radar system is given, and the engineering performance of the radar is discussed. The operating characteristics of the Arcibo Observatory in Puerto Rico are briefly described and compared with those of the GSSR. Planned and in-process improvements to the existing radar, as well as the performance of a hypothetical 128-m diameter antenna radar station, are described. A comprehensive bibliography of referred scientific and engineering articles presenting results that depended on data gathered by the instrument is provided
Architectures and Novel Functionalities for Optical Access OFDM Networks "Arquitecturas y Nuevas Funcionalidades para Redes OFDM de Acceso Óptico"
Morant Perez, M. Digital watermark technology in security applications
With the rising emphasis on security and the number of fraud related crimes
around the world, authorities are looking for new technologies to tighten
security of identity. Among many modern electronic technologies, digital
watermarking has unique advantages to enhance the document authenticity.
At the current status of the development, digital watermarking technologies
are not as matured as other competing technologies to support identity authentication
systems. This work presents improvements in performance of
two classes of digital watermarking techniques and investigates the issue of
watermark synchronisation.
Optimal performance can be obtained if the spreading sequences are designed
to be orthogonal to the cover vector. In this thesis, two classes of
orthogonalisation methods that generate binary sequences quasi-orthogonal
to the cover vector are presented. One method, namely "Sorting and Cancelling"
generates sequences that have a high level of orthogonality to the
cover vector. The Hadamard Matrix based orthogonalisation method, namely
"Hadamard Matrix Search" is able to realise overlapped embedding, thus the
watermarking capacity and image fidelity can be improved compared to using
short watermark sequences. The results are compared with traditional
pseudo-randomly generated binary sequences. The advantages of both classes
of orthogonalisation inethods are significant.
Another watermarking method that is introduced in the thesis is based
on writing-on-dirty-paper theory. The method is presented with biorthogonal
codes that have the best robustness. The advantage and trade-offs of
using biorthogonal codes with this watermark coding methods are analysed
comprehensively. The comparisons between orthogonal and non-orthogonal
codes that are used in this watermarking method are also made. It is found
that fidelity and robustness are contradictory and it is not possible to optimise
them simultaneously.
Comparisons are also made between all proposed methods. The comparisons
are focused on three major performance criteria, fidelity, capacity and
robustness. aom two different viewpoints, conclusions are not the same. For
fidelity-centric viewpoint, the dirty-paper coding methods using biorthogonal
codes has very strong advantage to preserve image fidelity and the advantage
of capacity performance is also significant. However, from the power
ratio point of view, the orthogonalisation methods demonstrate significant
advantage on capacity and robustness. The conclusions are contradictory
but together, they summarise the performance generated by different design
considerations.
The synchronisation of watermark is firstly provided by high contrast
frames around the watermarked image. The edge detection filters are used
to detect the high contrast borders of the captured image. By scanning
the pixels from the border to the centre, the locations of detected edges
are stored. The optimal linear regression algorithm is used to estimate the
watermarked image frames. Estimation of the regression function provides
rotation angle as the slope of the rotated frames. The scaling is corrected by
re-sampling the upright image to the original size. A theoretically studied
method that is able to synchronise captured image to sub-pixel level accuracy
is also presented. By using invariant transforms and the "symmetric
phase only matched filter" the captured image can be corrected accurately
to original geometric size. The method uses repeating watermarks to form an
array in the spatial domain of the watermarked image and the the array that
the locations of its elements can reveal information of rotation, translation
and scaling with two filtering processes
Spectrum Sharing, Latency, and Security in 5G Networks with Application to IoT and Smart Grid
The surge of mobile devices, such as smartphones, and tables, demands additional capacity. On the other hand, Internet-of-Things (IoT) and smart grid, which connects numerous sensors, devices, and machines require ubiquitous connectivity and data security. Additionally, some use cases, such as automated manufacturing process, automated transportation, and smart grid, require latency as low as 1 ms, and reliability as high as 99.99\%. To enhance throughput and support massive connectivity, sharing of the unlicensed spectrum (3.5 GHz, 5GHz, and mmWave) is a potential solution. On the other hand, to address the latency, drastic changes in the network architecture is required. The fifth generation (5G) cellular networks will embrace the spectrum sharing and network architecture modifications to address the throughput enhancement, massive connectivity, and low latency.
To utilize the unlicensed spectrum, we propose a fixed duty cycle based coexistence of LTE and WiFi, in which the duty cycle of LTE transmission can be adjusted based on the amount of data. In the second approach, a multi-arm bandit learning based coexistence of LTE and WiFi has been developed. The duty cycle of transmission and downlink power are adapted through the exploration and exploitation. This approach improves the aggregated capacity by 33\%, along with cell edge and energy efficiency enhancement. We also investigate the performance of LTE and ZigBee coexistence using smart grid as a scenario.
In case of low latency, we summarize the existing works into three domains in the context of 5G networks: core, radio and caching networks. Along with this, fundamental constraints for achieving low latency are identified followed by a general overview of exemplary 5G networks. Besides that, a loop-free, low latency and local-decision based routing protocol is derived in the context of smart grid. This approach ensures low latency and reliable data communication for stationary devices.
To address data security in wireless communication, we introduce a geo-location based data encryption, along with node authentication by k-nearest neighbor algorithm. In the second approach, node authentication by the support vector machine, along with public-private key management, is proposed. Both approaches ensure data security without increasing the packet overhead compared to the existing approaches

Impact of optical transmission on multi-band OFDM ultra-wideband wireless system with fiber distribution
The performance of MB-OFDM UWB over fiber transmission system is investigated considering optical modulation and demodulation impact. Theoretical analysis of the effect of fiber dispersion, optical transmitter and optical receiver response on system performance is carried out considering amplitude and phase distortion. Experiments are conducted and verified by our theoretical analysis and good agreement is obtained. It is found that RF modulation index of {598}4% is optimum for optical transmitter with Mach-Zehnder modulator, and optical receiver with Chebyshev-II response is the best for MB-OFDM UWB over fiber. It is also found that high received optical power is required for transmission of MB-OFDM UWB signal over fiber. Theoretical analysis of the effect of fiber chromatic dispersion induced laser phase to intensity noise or relative intensity noise (RIN) on system performance is carried out. Experiments are also conducted to verify our theoretical analysis. Simulation is also carried out to show the relationship between RIN and center frequency of UWB bands. It is found that the parameters like laser output power, laser linewidth and fiber dispersion that control RIN, will critically affect the overall performance of a UWB over fiber system. The performance of MB-OFDM UWB over fiber transmission system is also studied considering the effect of in-band jammers such as WiMAX, WLAN MIMO, WLAN and marine radar. Experiments were performed to show the effect of fiber transmission under various interferer power levels. It is found that in-band interferers can cause severe degradation in system performance if certain interferer to UWB peak power ratio is not maintaine
