    Throughput-driven floorplanning with wire pipelining

    The size of future high-performance SoC is such that the time-of-flight of wires connecting distant pins in the layout can be much higher than the clock period. In order to keep the frequency as high as possible, the wires may be pipelined. However, the insertion of flip-flops may alter the throughput of the system due to the presence of loops in the logic netlist. In this paper, we address the problem of floorplanning a large design where long interconnects are pipelined by inserting the throughput in the cost function of a tool based on simulated annealing. The results obtained on a series of benchmarks are then validated using a simple router that breaks long interconnects by suitably placing flip-flops along the wires

    Hybrid FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays) are composed of general-purpose logic resources with different granularities, together with domain-specific coarse-grained units. This thesis proposes a novel hybrid FPGA architecture with embedded coarse-grained Floating Point Units (FPUs) to improve the floating point capability of FPGAs. Based on the proposed hybrid FPGA architecture, we examine three aspects to optimise the speed and area for domain-specific applications. First, we examine the interface between large coarse-grained embedded blocks (EBs) and fine-grained elements in hybrid FPGAs. The interface includes parameters for varying: (1) aspect ratio of EBs, (2) position of the EBs in the FPGA, (3) I/O pins arrangement of EBs, (4) interconnect flexibility of EBs, and (5) location of additional embedded elements such as memory. Second, we examine the interconnect structure for hybrid FPGAs. We investigate how large and highdensity EBs affect the routing demand for hybrid FPGAs over a set of domain-specific applications. We then propose three routing optimisation methods to meet the additional routing demand introduced by large EBs: (1) identifying the best separation distance between EBs, (2) adding routing switches on EBs to increase routing flexibility, and (3) introducing wider channel width near the edge of EBs. We study and compare the trade-offs in delay, area and routability of these three optimisation methods. Finally, we employ common subgraph extraction to determine the number of floating point adders/subtractors, multipliers and wordblocks in the FPUs. The wordblocks include registers and can implement fixed point operations. We study the area, speed and utilisation trade-offs of the selected FPU subgraphs in a set of floating point benchmark circuits. We develop an optimised coarse-grained FPU, taking into account both architectural and system-level issues. Furthermore, we investigate the trade-offs between granularities and performance by composing small FPUs into a large FPU. The results of this thesis would help design a domain-specific hybrid FPGA to meet user requirements, by optimising for speed, area or a combination of speed and area

    Efficient quadratic placement for FPGAs.

    Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are widely used in industry because they can implement any digital circuit on site simply by specifying programmable logic and their interconnections. However, this rapid prototyping advantage may be adversely affected because of the long compile time, which is dominated by placement and routing. This issue is of great importance, especially as the logic capacities of FPGAs continue to grow. This thesis focuses on the placement phase of FPGA Computer Aided Design (CAD) flow and presents a fast, high quality, wirelength-driven placement algorithm for FPGAs that is based on the quadratic placement approach. In this thesis, multiple iterations of equation solving process together with a linear wirelength reduction technique are introduced. The proposed algorithm efficiently handles the main problems with the quadratic placement algorithm and produces a fast and high quality placement. Experimental results, using twenty benchmark circuits, show that this algorithm can achieve comparable total wirelength and, on average, 5X faster run time when compared to an existing, state-of-the-art placement tool. This thesis also shows that the proposed algorithm delivers promising preliminary results in minimizing the critical path delay while maintaining high placement quality.Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering.     Modeling, Simulation and Emulation of Intelligent Domotic Environments

    Intelligent Domotic Environments are a promising approach, based on semantic models and commercially off-the-shelf domotic technologies, to realize new intelligent buildings, but such complexity requires innovative design methodologies and tools for ensuring correctness. Suitable simulation and emulation approaches and tools must be adopted to allow designers to experiment with their ideas and to incrementally verify designed policies in a scenario where the environment is partly emulated and partly composed of real devices. This paper describes a framework, which exploits UML2.0 state diagrams for automatic generation of device simulators from ontology-based descriptions of domotic environments. The DogSim simulator may simulate a complete building automation system in software, or may be integrated in the Dog Gateway, allowing partial simulation of virtual devices alongside with real devices. Experiments on a real home show that the approach is feasible and can easily address both simulation and emulation requirement

    Speeding-Up Expensive Evaluations in High-Level Synthesis Using Solution Modeling and Fitness Inheritance

    High-Level Synthesis (HLS) is the process of developing digital circuits from behavioral specifications. It involves three interdependent and NP-complete optimization problems: (i) the operation scheduling, (ii) the resource allocation, and (iii) the controller synthesis. Evolutionary Algorithms have been already effectively applied to HLS to find good solution in presence of conflicting design objectives. In this paper, we present an evolutionary approach to HLS that extends previous works in three respects: (i) we exploit the NSGA-II, a multi-objective genetic algorithm, to fully automate the design space exploration without the need of any human intervention, (ii) we replace the expensive evaluation process of candidate solutions with a quite accurate regression model, and (iii) we reduce the number of evaluations with a fitness inheritance scheme. We tested our approach on several benchmark problems. Our results suggest that all the enhancements introduced improve the overall performance of the evolutionary search
