Family memories in the home: contrasting physical and digital mementos
We carried out fieldwork to characterise and compare physical and digital mementos in the home. Physical mementos are highly valued, heterogeneous and support different types of recollection. Contrary to expectations, we found physical mementos are not purely representational, and can involve appropriating common objects and more idiosyncratic forms. In contrast, digital mementos were initially perceived as less valuable, although participants later reconsidered this. Digital mementos were somewhat limited in function and expression, largely involving representational photos and videos, and infrequently accessed. We explain these digital limitations and conclude with design guidelines for digital mementos, including better techniques for accessing and integrating these into everyday life, allowing them to acquire the symbolic associations and lasting value that characterise their physical counterparts
BDGS: A Scalable Big Data Generator Suite in Big Data Benchmarking
Data generation is a key issue in big data benchmarking that aims to generate
application-specific data sets to meet the 4V requirements of big data.
Specifically, big data generators need to generate scalable data (Volume) of
different types (Variety) under controllable generation rates (Velocity) while
keeping the important characteristics of raw data (Veracity). This gives rise
to various new challenges about how we design generators efficiently and
successfully. To date, most existing techniques can only generate limited types
of data and support specific big data systems such as Hadoop. Hence we develop
a tool, called Big Data Generator Suite (BDGS), to efficiently generate
scalable big data while employing data models derived from real data to
preserve data veracity. The effectiveness of BDGS is demonstrated by developing
six data generators covering three representative data types (structured,
semi-structured and unstructured) and three data sources (text, graph, and
table data)
The Impact of ICT on Adolescents' Perceptions and Consumption of Substances
This paper reports the results of a three-month randomized controlled trial to estimate the impact of an Internet and mobile telephone short message service (SMS) intervention on adolescents’ information about substances and rates of consumption. A low percentage of participants logged on to the Web platform, but most participants were reached through e-mails and SMS. It is found that the intervention was able to affect awareness that certain substances are drugs, but no significant changes in consumption habits were found.Randomized trial, Drugs, Smoking, Alcohol
