The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the extent of use and access of emerging technology in business and different characteristics that motivate entrepreneurial women in the United States to generate business ideas and/or foam businesses. Based on a literature review, Use and Access of emerging technology was conceptualized as repeated or perceived behavior emanating from using emerging technology as well as knowledge of the technology. A new instrument Emerging Technology Entrepreneur Survey was developed and administered online to 283 entrepreneurial women who had provided usable emails in the Women in Business Program seminar event. The final response count was 40 representing a 14.13% response rate. Based on the studies interpretive scale women entrepreneurs were high users of emerging technologies. There were significant differences in the use of technology mean score based on highest level of education completed and the employment status. No significant differences in use of emerging technology mean score was observed based on gender, ethnicity, and marital status. There was also no significant differences in perceived use of emerging technology mean score based on the given demographic variables. However, differences between demographic variables based on the perceived use of technology and actual use of technology were observed. A binary logistic regression model predicted the absence of business idea generation and or business formation based on the categorical variable use of technology. Nevertheless, the model indicated that increased use of technology leads to increased odds of generating a business idea as well as creating a business when all other factors are controlled. The study concludes that women are using emerging technologies as the to go to sources for information and this in essence may lead to solving problems while at the same time positively affecting business idea generation as well as business formation

Knowledge sharing capability, absorptive capacity, and innovation capability: an empirical study of Indonesia's information and communication technology industry

    Get PDF
This research investigates the relationships between knowledge sharing capability, absorptive capacity, and innovation capability. This research proposed and tested three hypotheses. The data was collected by conducting a survey on 114 companies of Indonesia’s information and communication technology industry, including a telecommunication service provider, a support service provider, network vendors, and consumer devices vendors. This study finds that absorptive capacity is the intervening factor between knowledge sharing capability and innovation capability. It also shows that potential absorptive capacity has a positive influence on realized absorptive capacity, and realized absorptive capacity has a positive influence on product and process innovation capability

Innovation is something that is new, capable of being implemented, and has a beneficial impact. It is not an event or activity; it is a concept, process, practice, and capability that defines successful organizations. Innovation in the public sector can help create value for society

Prospect patents, data markets, and the commons in data-driven medicine : openness and the political economy of intellectual property rights

Scholars who point to political influences and the regulatory function of patent courts in the USA have long questioned the courts’ subjective interpretation of what ‘things’ can be claimed as inventions. The present article sheds light on a different but related facet: the role of the courts in regulating knowledge production. I argue that the recent cases decided by the US Supreme Court and the Federal Circuit, which made diagnostics and software very difficult to patent and which attracted criticism for a wealth of different reasons, are fine case studies of the current debate over the proper role of the state in regulating the marketplace and knowledge production in the emerging information economy. The article explains that these patents are prospect patents that may be used by a monopolist to collect data that everybody else needs in order to compete effectively. As such, they raise familiar concerns about failure of coordination emerging as a result of a monopolist controlling a resource such as datasets that others need and cannot replicate. In effect, the courts regulated the market, primarily focusing on ensuring the free flow of data in the emerging marketplace very much in the spirit of the ‘free the data’ language in various policy initiatives, yet at the same time with an eye to boost downstream innovation. In doing so, these decisions essentially endorse practices of personal information processing which constitute a new type of public domain: a source of raw materials which are there for the taking and which have become most important inputs to commercial activity. From this vantage point of view, the legal interpretation of the private and the shared legitimizes a model of data extraction from individuals, the raw material of information capitalism, that will fuel the next generation of data-intensive therapeutics in the field of data-driven medicine

Copyright @ 2011 Elsevier B.V.The presence of universities has generally been associated with technological entrepreneurship. But what is the real impact of new universities on the levels of firm creation in a region? The present paper uses policy evaluation methodologies and longitudinal data on the establishment of higher education institutions in Portuguese municipalities for the period 1992–2002 to examine its effect on entry rates of new firms in different sectors. We find that the establishment of a new university has a positive and significant effect on subsequent levels of knowledge based firm entry in municipalities, and a negative effect on the levels of entry in other sectors, such as low-tech manufacturing

Recomendation systems and crowdsourcing: a good wedding for enabling innovation? Results from technology affordances and costraints theory

Recommendation Systems have come a long way since their first appearance in the e-commerce platforms.Since then, evolved Recommendation Systems have been successfully integrated in social networks. Now its time to test their usability and replicate their success in exciting new areas of web -enabled phenomena. One of these is crowdsourcing. Research in the IS field is investigating the need, benefits and challenges of linking the two phenomena. At the moment, empirical works have only highlighted the need to implement these techniques for tasks assignment in crowdsourcing distributed work platforms and the derived benefits for contributors and firms. We review the variety of the tasks that can be crowdsourced through these platforms and theoretically evaluate the efficiency of using RS to recommend a task in creative crowdsourcing platforms. Adopting a Technology Affordances and Constraints Theory, an emerging perspective in the Information Systems (IS) literature to understand technology use and consequences, we anticipate the tensions that this implementation can generate
