It identifies and examines the most pressing research issues in Telecommunications and it contains chapters written by leading researchers, academics and industry professionals. Telecommunications Networks - Current Status and Future Trends covers surveys of recent publications that investigate key areas of interest such as: IMS, eTOM, 3G/4G, optimization problems, modeling, simulation, quality of service, etc. This book, that is suitable for both PhD and master students, is organized into six sections: New Generation Networks, Quality of Services, Sensor Networks, Telecommunications, Traffic Engineering and Routing

Network Traffic Measurements, Applications to Internet Services and Security

The Internet has become along the years a pervasive network interconnecting billions of users and is now playing the role of collector for a multitude of tasks, ranging from professional activities to personal interactions. From a technical standpoint, novel architectures, e.g., cloud-based services and content delivery networks, innovative devices, e.g., smartphones and connected wearables, and security threats, e.g., DDoS attacks, are posing new challenges in understanding network dynamics. In such complex scenario, network measurements play a central role to guide traffic management, improve network design, and evaluate application requirements. In addition, increasing importance is devoted to the quality of experience provided to final users, which requires thorough investigations on both the transport network and the design of Internet services. In this thesis, we stress the importance of users’ centrality by focusing on the traffic they exchange with the network. To do so, we design methodologies complementing passive and active measurements, as well as post-processing techniques belonging to the machine learning and statistics domains. Traffic exchanged by Internet users can be classified in three macro-groups: (i) Outbound, produced by users’ devices and pushed to the network; (ii) unsolicited, part of malicious attacks threatening users’ security; and (iii) inbound, directed to users’ devices and retrieved from remote servers. For each of the above categories, we address specific research topics consisting in the benchmarking of personal cloud storage services, the automatic identification of Internet threats, and the assessment of quality of experience in the Web domain, respectively. Results comprise several contributions in the scope of each research topic. In short, they shed light on (i) the interplay among design choices of cloud storage services, which severely impact the performance provided to end users; (ii) the feasibility of designing a general purpose classifier to detect malicious attacks, without chasing threat specificities; and (iii) the relevance of appropriate means to evaluate the perceived quality of Web pages delivery, strengthening the need of users’ feedbacks for a factual assessment

Tez (Yüksek Lisans) -- İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2013Thesis (M.Sc.) -- İstanbul Technical University, Institute of Science and Technology, 2013Bu çalışmada mobil veri şebekeleri için kullanıcıların yaşadıkları deneyim kalitesini ölçmek adına farklı bir metod önerilmektedir. In this study, introducing a new way of quality of experience calculation methodology is aimed. A new parameter, indicator of experience (IoE) has been introduced, which is a combination of quantised throughput and acceptability of the user for mobile internet service. Most QoE calculations use mobile client or user perception researches. Differently, network level statistics and radio network modeling is used to calculate IoE. This new approach is then compared with mobile client measurements in order to prove the usability of the approach.Yüksek LisansM.Sc

Third International Symposium on Space Mission Operations and Ground Data Systems, part 2

    Get PDF
Under the theme of 'Opportunities in Ground Data Systems for High Efficiency Operations of Space Missions,' the SpaceOps '94 symposium included presentations of more than 150 technical papers spanning five topic areas: Mission Management, Operations, Data Management, System Development, and Systems Engineering. The symposium papers focus on improvements in the efficiency, effectiveness, and quality of data acquisition, ground systems, and mission operations. New technology, methods, and human systems are discussed. Accomplishments are also reported in the application of information systems to improve data retrieval, reporting, and archiving; the management of human factors; the use of telescience and teleoperations; and the design and implementation of logistics support for mission operations. This volume covers expert systems, systems development tools and approaches, and systems engineering issues

Privatisation of public enterprises in COMESA: An exploration of approaches and strategies: the case of the privatization of Telkom Kenya

    Get PDF
This thesis investigates Kenya's approach to the privatization process through an exploration of Telkom Kenya's (TKL) unfolding privatization. The thesis research identifies outlines and documents the developments in Kenya's approach to the privatization programs in a developing economy of the COMESA region. In the process, the analysis contributes to an approach of privatizing and restructuring in Kenya. It has also helped explain new phenomena in privatizing in an environment with no institutional infrastructure and in the process has generated and contributed to new knowledge whose detail is discussed in chapter five. The research took an exploratory approach because there are few or no earlier studies in which a secondary data analysis solely was to be analyzed. The empirical data was based on observing and experiencing the real world with a focus to gain insights and familiarity on approaches to the privatization process. Although there is a variety of privatization literature and studies, these have tended to focus on developed and emerging economies and lately specific sectors of their interest. The analysis uses field primary and secondary data sources and an extensive literature review on privatization focusing on specific elements of approaches and developments in the less developing countries (LDCs) and in Kenya. The data collection and analysis focused on outlining Kenya’s actual process of choosing and implementing sectors, objectives, methods, techniques and strategies of transacting Telkom Kenya as a strategic enterprise under the GOK's privatization program. In attempting to respond to the central research question raised in chapter one (page 9) the thesis undertakes an in-depth mixed method analysis (majorly qualitative) of approaches to the privatization process. The research is driven by the central research question (s): "What are (why and how) the approaches and strategies of Kenya's privatization program in a developing economy?” The research outcome identifies and outlines a 'sketch approach' to Kenya's privatization program and process. The research analysis concludes that efforts to institutionalize (i.e. regulatory framework) the process, in order to make Kenya's approach more tangible, effective, efficient, and accountable need further attention. Evidence further shows that privatisation of Kenya’s strategic state enterprises (SSE, s) raises concerns of the socio-political dynamics of the management of the selected approaches, methods, processes, and objectives of privatization by GOK. Indeed 80 % of the respondents argued that privatization is crucial in enabling the government divest from business. However, the political control remains an impediment to independent and fair strengthening and building of privatization institutions. In this regard, this thesis' major contribution of identifying Kenya's approach provides a first attempt at a 'guide’ to the privatization process that is clear, accountable and open to checks and balances
