    Predictive LPV control of a liquid-gas separation process

    [EN] The problem of controlling a liquid-gas separation process is approached by using LPV control techniques. An LPV model is derived from a nonlinear model of the process using differential inclusion techniques. Once an LPV model is available, an LPV controller can be synthesized. The authors present a predictive LPV controller based on the GPC controller [Clarke D, Mohtadi C, Tuffs P. Generalized predictive control - Part I. Automatica 1987;23(2):137-48; Clarke D, Mohtadi C, Tuffs P. Generalized predictive control - Part II. Extensions and interpretations. Automatica 1987;23(2):149-60]. The resulting controller is denoted as GPC-LPV. This one shows the same structure as a general LPV controller [El Gahoui L, Scorletti G. Control of rational systems using linear-fractional representations and linear matrix inequalities. Automatica 1996;32(9):1273-84; Scorletti G, El Ghaoui L. Improved LMI conditions for gain scheduling and related control problems. International Journal of Robust Nonlinear Control 1998;8:845-77; Apkarian P, Tuan HD. Parametrized LMIs in control theory. In: Proceedings of the 37th IEEE conference on decision and control; 1998. p. 152-7; Scherer CW. LPV control and full block multipliers. Automatica 2001;37:361-75], which presents a linear fractional dependence on the process signal measurements. Therefore, this controller has the ability of modifying its dynamics depending on measurements leading to a possibly nonlinear controller. That controller is designed in two steps. First, for a given steady state point is obtained a linear GPC using a linear local model of the nonlinear system around that operating point. And second, using bilinear and linear matrix inequalities (BMIs/LMIs) the remaining matrices of GPC-LPV are selected in order to achieve some closed loop properties: stability in some operation zone, norm bounding of some input/output channels, maximum settling time, maximum overshoot, etc., given some LPV model for the nonlinear system. As an application, a GPC-LPV is designed for the derived LPV model of the liquid-gas separation process. This methodology can be applied to any nonlinear system which can be embedded in an LPV system using differential inclusion techniques. (C) 2006 Elsevier Ltd.     5th IFAC Conference on System Structure and Control 1998 (SSC'98), Nantes, France, 8-10 JulyThis paper shows that "optimal" controllers based on "optimal" predictor structures are not "optimal" in their closed loop behaviour and that predictors should be designed taking into account closed-loop considerations. This is first illustrated with a first order plant with delay. The ISE index is computed for two typical optimal controllers (minimum variance controller and generalized predictive controller) when a stochastic disturbance is considered. The results are compared to those obtained by the use of a non optimal PI controller that uses a non optimal Smith predictor and performs better than the optimal controllers for the illustrative example. A general structure for predictors is proposed. In order to illustrate the results, some simulation examples are shown.Ce papier montre que des lois de commandes "optimales" basees sur des structures predictives "optimales" ne sont pas "optimales" dans leur comportement en boucle fermee et que la synthese de predicteurs devrait prendre en compte des considerations de boucle fermee. Cela est d'abord illustre avec un systeme du premier ordre a retard. l'index ISE est calcule pour deux lois de commandes optimales typiques (loi de commande a variance minim ale et loi de commande predictive generalisee), quand une perturbation stochastique est consideree. Les resultats sont compares a. ceux obtenus avec un regulateur PI non optimal base sur un predicteur de Smith non optimal et sont, pour l'exemple illustratif, meilleurs que ceux obtenus avec un regulateur optimal.     Multivariable predictive controller for a test stand of air conditionning

    In this paper a Multivariable Predictive Controller has been proposed in a stochastic framework for a M-input N-output system. It has been investigated using a simulation study based on an experimental model of an industrial test stand of air conditioning. Comparisons with the existing PID regulation show a great improvement : both step response and coupling effect limitation have been improved. With a 32 ms calculation time on a PC with 486DX processor (or 8 ms with a Pentium 100 processor), this regulator is able to answer the problems raised by this industrial test stand. Compatible with the industrial regulation hardware, this control algorithm will be soon set up and tested to lead the future air conditioning tests

    Non-linear predictive control for manufacturing and robotic applications

    The paper discusses predictive control algorithms in the context of applications to robotics and manufacturing systems. Special features of such systems, as compared to traditional process control applications, require that the algorithms are capable of dealing with faster dynamics, more significant unstabilities and more significant contribution of non-linearities to the system performance. The paper presents the general framework for state-space design of predictive algorithms. Linear algorithms are introduced first, then, the attention moves to non-linear systems. Methods of predictive control are presented which are based on the state-dependent state space system description. Those are illustrated on examples of rather difficult mechanical systems

    Robust Constrained Model Predictive Control using Linear Matrix Inequalities

    The primary disadvantage of current design techniques for model predictive control (MPC) is their inability to deal explicitly with plant model uncertainty. In this paper, we present a new approach for robust MPC synthesis which allows explicit incorporation of the description of plant uncertainty in the problem formulation. The uncertainty is expressed both in the time domain and the frequency domain. The goal is to design, at each time step, a state-feedback control law which minimizes a "worst-case" infinite horizon objective function, subject to constraints on the control input and plant output. Using standard techniques, the problem of minimizing an upper bound on the "worst-case" objective function, subject to input and output constraints, is reduced to a convex optimization involving linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). It is shown that the feasible receding horizon state-feedback control design robustly stabilizes the set of uncertain plants under consideration. Several extensions, such as application to systems with time-delays and problems involving constant set-point tracking, trajectory tracking and disturbance rejection, which follow naturally from our formulation, are discussed. The controller design procedure is illustrated with two examples. Finally, conclusions are presented

    State-space approach to nonlinear predictive generalized minimum variance control

    A Nonlinear Predictive Generalized Minimum Variance (NPGMV) control algorithm is introduced for the control of nonlinear discrete-time multivariable systems. The plant model is represented by the combination of a very general nonlinear operator and also a linear subsystem which can be open-loop unstable and is represented in state-space model form. The multi-step predictive control cost index to be minimised involves both weighted error and control signal costing terms. The solution for the control law is derived in the time-domain using a general operator representation of the process. The controller includes an internal model of the nonlinear process but because of the assumed structure of the system the state observer is only required to be linear. In the asymptotic case, where the plant is linear, the controller reduces to a state-space version of the well known GPC controller

    The disturbance model in model based predictive control

    Model Based Predictive Control (MBPC) is a control methodology which uses a process model on-line in the control computer; this model is used for calculating output predictions and optimizing control actions. The importance of the system model has been generally recognized, but less attention has been paid to the role of the disturbance model. In this paper the importance of the disturbance model is indicated with respect to the EPSAC approach to MBPC. To illustrate this importance, an example of this advanced control methodology applied to a typical mechatronic system is presented, to compare the performances obtained by using different disturbance models. It clearly shows the benefits of using an "intelligent" disturbance model instead of the "default" model generally adopted in practice

    Although nonlinear inverse and predictive control techniques based on artificial neural networks have been extensively applied to nonlinear systems, their use in real time applications is generally limited. In this paper neural inverse and predictive control systems have been applied to the real-time control of the heat transfer fluid temperature in a pilot chemical reactor. The training of the inverse control system is carried out using both generalised and specialised learning. This allows the preparation of weights of the controller acting in real-time and appropriate performances of inverse neural controller can be achieved. The predictive control system makes use of a neural network to calculate the control action. Thus, the problems related to the high computational effort involved in nonlinear model-predictive control systems are reduced. The performance of the neural controllers is compared against the self-tuning PID controller currently installed in the plant. The results show that neural-based controllers improve the performance of the real plant.Publicad
