Simulation of an Axial Vircator
An algorithm of particle-in-cell simulations is described and tested to aid
further the actual design of simple vircators working on axially symmetric
modes. The methods of correction of the numerical solution, have been chosen
and jointly tested, allow the stable simulation of the fast nonlinear multiflow
dynamics of virtual cathode formation and evolution, as well as the fields
generated by the virtual cathode. The selected combination of the correction
methods can be straightforwardly generalized to the case of axially
nonsymmetric modes, while the parameters of these correction methods can be
widely used to improve an agreement between the simulation predictions and the
experimental data.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
Level Set Methods for Stochastic Discontinuity Detection in Nonlinear Problems
Stochastic physical problems governed by nonlinear conservation laws are
challenging due to solution discontinuities in stochastic and physical space.
In this paper, we present a level set method to track discontinuities in
stochastic space by solving a Hamilton-Jacobi equation. By introducing a speed
function that vanishes at discontinuities, the iso-zero of the level set
problem coincide with the discontinuities of the conservation law. The level
set problem is solved on a sequence of successively finer grids in stochastic
space. The method is adaptive in the sense that costly evaluations of the
conservation law of interest are only performed in the vicinity of the
discontinuities during the refinement stage. In regions of stochastic space
where the solution is smooth, a surrogate method replaces expensive evaluations
of the conservation law. The proposed method is tested in conjunction with
different sets of localized orthogonal basis functions on simplex elements, as
well as frames based on piecewise polynomials conforming to the level set
function. The performance of the proposed method is compared to existing
adaptive multi-element generalized polynomial chaos methods
Spectral methods for CFD
One of the objectives of these notes is to provide a basic introduction to spectral methods with a particular emphasis on applications to computational fluid dynamics. Another objective is to summarize some of the most important developments in spectral methods in the last two years. The fundamentals of spectral methods for simple problems will be covered in depth, and the essential elements of several fluid dynamical applications will be sketched
Fractional order differentiation by integration: an application to fractional linear systems
International audienceIn this article, we propose a robust method to compute the output of a fractional linear system defined through a linear fractional differential equation (FDE) with time-varying coefficients, where the input can be noisy. We firstly introduce an estimator of the fractional derivative of an unknown signal, which is defined by an integral formula obtained by calculating the fractional derivative of a truncated Jacobi polynomial series expansion. We then approximate the FDE by applying to each fractional derivative this formal algebraic integral estimator. Consequently, the fractional derivatives of the solution are applied on the used Jacobi polynomials and then we need to identify the unknown coefficients of the truncated series expansion of the solution. Modulating functions method is used to estimate these coefficients by solving a linear system issued from the approximated FDE and some initial conditions. A numerical result is given to confirm the reliability of the proposed method
