    Single- and multi-microphone speech dereverberation using spectral enhancement

    In speech communication systems, such as voice-controlled systems, hands-free mobile telephones, and hearing aids, the received microphone signals are degraded by room reverberation, background noise, and other interferences. This signal degradation may lead to total unintelligibility of the speech and decreases the performance of automatic speech recognition systems. In the context of this work reverberation is the process of multi-path propagation of an acoustic sound from its source to one or more microphones. The received microphone signal generally consists of a direct sound, reflections that arrive shortly after the direct sound (commonly called early reverberation), and reflections that arrive after the early reverberation (commonly called late reverberation). Reverberant speech can be described as sounding distant with noticeable echo and colouration. These detrimental perceptual effects are primarily caused by late reverberation, and generally increase with increasing distance between the source and microphone. Conversely, early reverberations tend to improve the intelligibility of speech. In combination with the direct sound it is sometimes referred to as the early speech component. Reduction of the detrimental effects of reflections is evidently of considerable practical importance, and is the focus of this dissertation. More specifically the dissertation deals with dereverberation techniques, i.e., signal processing techniques to reduce the detrimental effects of reflections. In the dissertation, novel single- and multimicrophone speech dereverberation algorithms are developed that aim at the suppression of late reverberation, i.e., at estimation of the early speech component. This is done via so-called spectral enhancement techniques that require a specific measure of the late reverberant signal. This measure, called spectral variance, can be estimated directly from the received (possibly noisy) reverberant signal(s) using a statistical reverberation model and a limited amount of a priori knowledge about the acoustic channel(s) between the source and the microphone(s). In our work an existing single-channel statistical reverberation model serves as a starting point. The model is characterized by one parameter that depends on the acoustic characteristics of the environment. We show that the spectral variance estimator that is based on this model, can only be used when the source-microphone distance is larger than the so-called critical distance. This is, crudely speaking, the distance where the direct sound power is equal to the total reflective power. A generalization of the statistical reverberation model in which the direct sound is incorporated is developed. This model requires one additional parameter that is related to the ratio between the direct sound energy and the sound energy of all reflections. The generalized model is used to derive a novel spectral variance estimator. When the novel estimator is used for dereverberation rather than the existing estimator, and the source-microphone distance is smaller than the critical distance, the dereverberation performance is significantly increased. Single-microphone systems only exploit the temporal and spectral diversity of the received signal. Reverberation, of course, also induces spatial diversity. To additionally exploit this diversity, multiple microphones must be used, and their outputs must be combined by a suitable spatial processor such as the so-called delay and sum beamformer. It is not a priori evident whether spectral enhancement is best done before or after the spatial processor. For this reason we investigate both possibilities, as well as a merge of the spatial processor and the spectral enhancement technique. An advantage of the latter option is that the spectral variance estimator can be further improved. Our experiments show that the use of multiple microphones affords a significant improvement of the perceptual speech quality. The applicability of the theory developed in this dissertation is demonstrated using a hands-free communication system. Since hands-free systems are often used in a noisy and reverberant environment, the received microphone signal does not only contain the desired signal but also interferences such as room reverberation that is caused by the desired source, background noise, and a far-end echo signal that results from a sound that is produced by the loudspeaker. Usually an acoustic echo canceller is used to cancel the far-end echo. Additionally a post-processor is used to suppress background noise and residual echo, i.e., echo which could not be cancelled by the echo canceller. In this work a novel structure and post-processor for an acoustic echo canceller are developed. The post-processor suppresses late reverberation caused by the desired source, residual echo, and background noise. The late reverberation and late residual echo are estimated using the generalized statistical reverberation model. Experimental results convincingly demonstrate the benefits of the proposed system for suppressing late reverberation, residual echo and background noise. The proposed structure and post-processor have a low computational complexity, a highly modular structure, can be seamlessly integrated into existing hands-free communication systems, and affords a significant increase of the listening comfort and speech intelligibility

    A compact noise covariance matrix model for MVDR beamforming

    Acoustic beamforming is routinely used to improve the SNR of the received signal in applications such as hearing aids, robot audition, augmented reality, teleconferencing, source localisation and source tracking. The beamformer can be made adaptive by using an estimate of the time-varying noise covariance matrix in the spectral domain to determine an optimised beam pattern in each frequency bin that is specific to the acoustic environment and that can respond to temporal changes in it. However, robust estimation of the noise covariance matrix remains a challenging task especially in non-stationary acoustic environments. This paper presents a compact model of the signal covariance matrix that is defined by a small number of parameters whose values can be reliably estimated. The model leads to a robust estimate of the noise covariance matrix which can, in turn, be used to construct a beamformer. The performance of beamformers designed using this approach is evaluated for a spherical microphone array under a range of conditions using both simulated and measured room impulse responses. The proposed approach demonstrates consistent gains in intelligibility and perceptual quality metrics compared to the static and adaptive beamformers used as baselines

    The use of reverberation models is required in many applications such as acoustic measurements, speech dereverberation and robust automatic speech recognition. The aim of this thesis is to investigate different models and propose a perceptually-relevant reverberation model with suitable parameter estimation techniques for different applications. Reverberation can be modelled in both the time and frequency domain. The model parameters give direct information of both physical and perceptual characteristics. These characteristics create a multidimensional parameter space of reverberation, which can be to a large extent captured by a time-frequency domain model. In this thesis, the relationship between physical and perceptual model parameters will be discussed. In the first application, an intrusive technique is proposed to measure the reverberation or reverberance, perception of reverberation and the colouration. The room decay rate parameter is of particular interest. In practical applications, a blind estimate of the decay rate of acoustic energy in a room is required. A statistical model for the distribution of the decay rate of the reverberant signal named the eagleMax distribution is proposed. The eagleMax distribution describes the reverberant speech decay rates as a random variable that is the maximum of the room decay rates and anechoic speech decay rates. Three methods were developed to estimate the mean room decay rate from the eagleMax distributions alone. The estimated room decay rates form a reverberation model that will be discussed in the context of room acoustic measurements, speech dereverberation and robust automatic speech recognition individually

    Spatial, Spectral, and Perceptual Nonlinear Noise Reduction for Hands-free Microphones in a Car

    Speech enhancement in an automobile is a challenging problem because interference can come from engine noise, fans, music, wind, road noise, reverberation, echo, and passengers engaging in other conversations. Hands-free microphones make the situation worse because the strength of the desired speech signal reduces with increased distance between the microphone and talker. Automobile safety is improved when the driver can use a hands-free interface to phones and other devices instead of taking his eyes off the road. The demand for high quality hands-free communication in the automobile requires the introduction of more powerful algorithms. This thesis shows that a unique combination of five algorithms can achieve superior speech enhancement for a hands-free system when compared to beamforming or spectral subtraction alone. Several different designs were analyzed and tested before converging on the configuration that achieved the best results. Beamforming, voice activity detection, spectral subtraction, perceptual nonlinear weighting, and talker isolation via pitch tracking all work together in a complementary iterative manner to create a speech enhancement system capable of significantly enhancing real world speech signals. The following conclusions are supported by the simulation results using data recorded in a car and are in strong agreement with theory. Adaptive beamforming, like the Generalized Side-lobe Canceller (GSC), can be effectively used if the filters only adapt during silent data frames because too much of the desired speech is cancelled otherwise. Spectral subtraction removes stationary noise while perceptual weighting prevents the introduction of offensive audible noise artifacts. Talker isolation via pitch tracking can perform better when used after beamforming and spectral subtraction because of the higher accuracy obtained after initial noise removal. Iterating the algorithm once increases the accuracy of the Voice Activity Detection (VAD), which improves the overall performance of the algorithm. Placing the microphone(s) on the ceiling above the head and slightly forward of the desired talker appears to be the best location in an automobile based on the experiments performed in this thesis. Objective speech quality measures show that the algorithm removes a majority of the stationary noise in a hands-free environment of an automobile with relatively minimal speech distortion

    Audio-Motor Integration for Robot Audition

    International audienceIn the context of robotics, audio signal processing in the wild amounts to dealing with sounds recorded by a system that moves and whose actuators produce noise. This creates additional challenges in sound source localization, signal enhancement and recognition. But the speci-ficity of such platforms also brings interesting opportunities: can information about the robot actuators' states be meaningfully integrated in the audio processing pipeline to improve performance and efficiency? While robot audition grew to become an established field, methods that explicitly use motor-state information as a complementary modality to audio are scarcer. This chapter proposes a unified view of this endeavour, referred to as audio-motor integration. A literature review and two learning-based methods for audio-motor integration in robot audition are presented, with application to single-microphone sound source localization and ego-noise reduction on real data

    Acoustic event detection and localization using distributed microphone arrays

    Automatic acoustic scene analysis is a complex task that involves several functionalities: detection (time), localization (space), separation, recognition, etc. This thesis focuses on both acoustic event detection (AED) and acoustic source localization (ASL), when several sources may be simultaneously present in a room. In particular, the experimentation work is carried out with a meeting-room scenario. Unlike previous works that either employed models of all possible sound combinations or additionally used video signals, in this thesis, the time overlapping sound problem is tackled by exploiting the signal diversity that results from the usage of multiple microphone array beamformers. The core of this thesis work is a rather computationally efficient approach that consists of three processing stages. In the first, a set of (null) steering beamformers is used to carry out diverse partial signal separations, by using multiple arbitrarily located linear microphone arrays, each of them composed of a small number of microphones. In the second stage, each of the beamformer output goes through a classification step, which uses models for all the targeted sound classes (HMM-GMM, in the experiments). Then, in a third stage, the classifier scores, either being intra- or inter-array, are combined using a probabilistic criterion (like MAP) or a machine learning fusion technique (fuzzy integral (FI), in the experiments). The above-mentioned processing scheme is applied in this thesis to a set of complexity-increasing problems, which are defined by the assumptions made regarding identities (plus time endpoints) and/or positions of sounds. In fact, the thesis report starts with the problem of unambiguously mapping the identities to the positions, continues with AED (positions assumed) and ASL (identities assumed), and ends with the integration of AED and ASL in a single system, which does not need any assumption about identities or positions. The evaluation experiments are carried out in a meeting-room scenario, where two sources are temporally overlapped; one of them is always speech and the other is an acoustic event from a pre-defined set. Two different databases are used, one that is produced by merging signals actually recorded in the UPCÂżs department smart-room, and the other consists of overlapping sound signals directly recorded in the same room and in a rather spontaneous way. From the experimental results with a single array, it can be observed that the proposed detection system performs better than either the model based system or a blind source separation based system. Moreover, the product rule based combination and the FI based fusion of the scores resulting from the multiple arrays improve the accuracies further. On the other hand, the posterior position assignment is performed with a very small error rate. Regarding ASL and assuming an accurate AED system output, the 1-source localization performance of the proposed system is slightly better than that of the widely-used SRP-PHAT system, working in an event-based mode, and it even performs significantly better than the latter one in the more complex 2-source scenario. Finally, though the joint system suffers from a slight degradation in terms of classification accuracy with respect to the case where the source positions are known, it shows the advantage of carrying out the two tasks, recognition and localization, with a single system, and it allows the inclusion of information about the prior probabilities of the source positions. It is worth noticing also that, although the acoustic scenario used for experimentation is rather limited, the approach and its formalism were developed for a general case, where the number and identities of sources are not constrained
