    Many-Light Real-Time Global Illumination using Sparse Voxel Octree

    Global illumination (GI) rendering simulates the propagation of light through a 3D volume and its interaction with surfaces, dramatically increasing the fidelity of computer generated images. While off-line GI algorithms such as ray tracing and radiosity can generate physically accurate images, their rendering speeds are too slow for real-time applications. The many-light method is one of many novel emerging real-time global illumination algorithms. However, it requires many shadow maps to be generated for Virtual Point Light (VPL) visibility tests, which reduces its efficiency. Prior solutions restrict either the number or accuracy of shadow map updates, which may lower the accuracy of indirect illumination or prevent the rendering of fully dynamic scenes. In this thesis, we propose a hybrid real-time GI algorithm that utilizes an efficient Sparse Voxel Octree (SVO) ray marching algorithm for visibility tests instead of the shadow map generation step of the many-light algorithm. Our technique achieves high rendering fidelity at about 50 FPS, is highly scalable and can support thousands of VPLs generated on the fly. A survey of current real-time GI techniques as well as details of our implementation using OpenGL and Shader Model 5 are also presented

    Sparse Volumetric Deformation

    Volume rendering is becoming increasingly popular as applications require realistic solid shape representations with seamless texture mapping and accurate filtering. However rendering sparse volumetric data is difficult because of the limited memory and processing capabilities of current hardware. To address these limitations, the volumetric information can be stored at progressive resolutions in the hierarchical branches of a tree structure, and sampled according to the region of interest. This means that only a partial region of the full dataset is processed, and therefore massive volumetric scenes can be rendered efficiently. The problem with this approach is that it currently only supports static scenes. This is because it is difficult to accurately deform massive amounts of volume elements and reconstruct the scene hierarchy in real-time. Another problem is that deformation operations distort the shape where more than one volume element tries to occupy the same location, and similarly gaps occur where deformation stretches the elements further than one discrete location. It is also challenging to efficiently support sophisticated deformations at hierarchical resolutions, such as character skinning or physically based animation. These types of deformation are expensive and require a control structure (for example a cage or skeleton) that maps to a set of features to accelerate the deformation process. The problems with this technique are that the varying volume hierarchy reflects different feature sizes, and manipulating the features at the original resolution is too expensive; therefore the control structure must also hierarchically capture features according to the varying volumetric resolution. This thesis investigates the area of deforming and rendering massive amounts of dynamic volumetric content. The proposed approach efficiently deforms hierarchical volume elements without introducing artifacts and supports both ray casting and rasterization renderers. This enables light transport to be modeled both accurately and efficiently with applications in the fields of real-time rendering and computer animation. Sophisticated volumetric deformation, including character animation, is also supported in real-time. This is achieved by automatically generating a control skeleton which is mapped to the varying feature resolution of the volume hierarchy.     In this thesis, we focus on approximating indirect illumination on real-time applications to visualize realistic scenes. In order to approximate indirect illumination we provide a fast sparse voxel tree structure for highly dynamic scenes. Our system tries to cover traditional real-time animation methods including dynamic non-deforming objects and objects that deform with bone transformations. The voxel scene data structure is designed for fully dynamic objects and eliminates the voxelization of the dynamic objects per frame which in turn facilitates efficient realistic rendering. We combine this new scene information structure with the widely used real-time rendering techniques and these techniques’ data structures such as shadow mapping and deferred rendering to provide an efficient cone ray-casting algorithm that achieves global illumination in real-time. M.S. - Master of Scienc

    Searching Efficient 3D Architectures with Sparse Point-Voxel Convolution

    Self-driving cars need to understand 3D scenes efficiently and accurately in order to drive safely. Given the limited hardware resources, existing 3D perception models are not able to recognize small instances (e.g., pedestrians, cyclists) very well due to the low-resolution voxelization and aggressive downsampling. To this end, we propose Sparse Point-Voxel Convolution (SPVConv), a lightweight 3D module that equips the vanilla Sparse Convolution with the high-resolution point-based branch. With negligible overhead, this point-based branch is able to preserve the fine details even from large outdoor scenes. To explore the spectrum of efficient 3D models, we first define a flexible architecture design space based on SPVConv, and we then present 3D Neural Architecture Search (3D-NAS) to search the optimal network architecture over this diverse design space efficiently and effectively. Experimental results validate that the resulting SPVNAS model is fast and accurate: it outperforms the state-of-the-art MinkowskiNet by 3.3%, ranking 1st on the competitive SemanticKITTI leaderboard. It also achieves 8x computation reduction and 3x measured speedup over MinkowskiNet with higher accuracy. Finally, we transfer our method to 3D object detection, and it achieves consistent improvements over the one-stage detection baseline on KITTI.Comment: ECCV 2020.     A Sparse Voxel Octree-Based Framework for Computing Solar Radiation Using 3D City Models

    abstract: An effective three-dimensional (3D) data representation is required to assess the spatial distribution of the photovoltaic potential over urban building roofs and facades using 3D city models. Voxels have long been used as a spatial data representation, but practical applications of the voxel representation have been limited compared with rasters in traditional two-dimensional (2D) geographic information systems (GIS). We propose to use sparse voxel octree (SVO) as a data representation to extend the GRASS GIS r.sun solar radiation model from 2D to 3D. The GRASS GIS r.sun model is nested in an SVO-based computing framework. The presented 3D solar radiation computing framework was applied to 3D building groups of different geometric complexities to demonstrate its efficiency and scalability. We presented a method to explicitly compute diffuse shading losses in r.sun, and found that diffuse shading losses can reduce up to 10% of the annual global radiation under clear sky conditions. Hence, diffuse shading losses are of significant importance especially in complex urban environments

    Automated Digital Machining for Parallel Processors

    When a process engineer creates a tool path a number of fixed decisions are made that inevitably produce sub-optimal results. This is because it is impossible to process all of the tradeoffs before generating the tool path. The research presents a methodology to support a process engineers attempt to generate optimal tool paths by performing automated digital machining and analysis. This methodology automatically generates and evaluates tool paths based on parallel processing of digital part models and generalized cutting geometry. Digital part models are created by voxelizing STL files and the resulting digital part surfaces are obtained based on casting rays into the part model. Tool paths are generated based on a general path template and updated based on generalized tool geometry and part surface information. The material removed by the generalized cutter as it follows the path is used to obtain path metrics. The paths are evaluated based on the path metrics of material removal rate, machining time, and amount of scallop. This methodology is a parallel processing accelerated framework suitable for generating tool paths in parallel enabling the process engineer to rank and select the best tool path for the job

    dissertationVisualizing surfaces is a fundamental technique in computer science and is frequently used across a wide range of fields such as computer graphics, biology, engineering, and scientific visualization. In many cases, visualizing an interface between boundaries can provide meaningful analysis or simplification of complex data. Some examples include physical simulation for animation, multimaterial mesh extraction in biophysiology, flow on airfoils in aeronautics, and integral surfaces. However, the quest for high-quality visualization, coupled with increasingly complex data, comes with a high computational cost. Therefore, new techniques are needed to solve surface visualization problems within a reasonable amount of time while also providing sophisticated visuals that are meaningful to scientists and engineers. In this dissertation, novel techniques are presented to facilitate surface visualization. First, a particle system for mesh extraction is parallelized on the graphics processing unit (GPU) with a red-black update scheme to achieve an order of magnitude speed-up over a central processing unit (CPU) implementation. Next, extending the red-black technique to multiple materials showed inefficiencies on the GPU. Therefore, we borrow the underlying data structure from the closest point method, the closest point embedding, and the particle system solver is switched to hierarchical octree-based approach on the GPU. Third, to demonstrate that the closest point embedding is a fast, flexible data structure for surface particles, it is adapted to unsteady surface flow visualization at near-interactive speeds. Finally, the closest point embedding is a three-dimensional dense structure that does not scale well. Therefore, we introduce a closest point sparse octree that allows the closest point embedding to scale to higher resolution. Further, we demonstrate unsteady line integral convolution using the closest point method
