    Speech data analysis for semantic indexing of video of simulated medical crises.

    The Simulation for Pediatric Assessment, Resuscitation, and Communication (SPARC) group within the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Louisville, was established to enhance the care of children by using simulation based educational methodologies to improve patient safety and strengthen clinician-patient interactions. After each simulation session, the physician must manually review and annotate the recordings and then debrief the trainees. The physician responsible for the simulation has recorded 100s of videos, and is seeking solutions that can automate the process. This dissertation introduces our developed system for efficient segmentation and semantic indexing of videos of medical simulations using machine learning methods. It provides the physician with automated tools to review important sections of the simulation by identifying who spoke, when and what was his/her emotion. Only audio information is extracted and analyzed because the quality of the image recording is low and the visual environment is static for most parts. Our proposed system includes four main components: preprocessing, speaker segmentation, speaker identification, and emotion recognition. The preprocessing consists of first extracting the audio component from the video recording. Then, extracting various low-level audio features to detect and remove silence segments. We investigate and compare two different approaches for this task. The first one is threshold-based and the second one is classification-based. The second main component of the proposed system consists of detecting speaker changing points for the purpose of segmenting the audio stream. We propose two fusion methods for this task. The speaker identification and emotion recognition components of our system are designed to provide users the capability to browse the video and retrieve shots that identify ā€who spoke, when, and the speakerā€™s emotionā€ for further analysis. For this component, we propose two feature representation methods that map audio segments of arbitary length to a feature vector with fixed dimensions. The first one is based on soft bag-of-word (BoW) feature representations. In particular, we define three types of BoW that are based on crisp, fuzzy, and possibilistic voting. The second feature representation is a generalization of the BoW and is based on Fisher Vector (FV). FV uses the Fisher Kernel principle and combines the benefits of generative and discriminative approaches. The proposed feature representations are used within two learning frameworks. The first one is supervised learning and assumes that a large collection of labeled training data is available. Within this framework, we use standard classifiers including K-nearest neighbor (K-NN), support vector machine (SVM), and Naive Bayes. The second framework is based on semi-supervised learning where only a limited amount of labeled training samples are available. We use an approach that is based on label propagation. Our proposed algorithms were evaluated using 15 medical simulation sessions. The results were analyzed and compared to those obtained using state-of-the-art algorithms. We show that our proposed speech segmentation fusion algorithms and feature mappings outperform existing methods. We also integrated all proposed algorithms and developed a GUI prototype system for subjective evaluation. This prototype processes medical simulation video and provides the user with a visual summary of the different speech segments. It also allows the user to browse videos and retrieve scenes that provide answers to semantic queries such as: who spoke and when; who interrupted who? and what was the emotion of the speaker? The GUI prototype can also provide summary statistics of each simulation video. Examples include: for how long did each person spoke? What is the longest uninterrupted speech segment? Is there an unusual large number of pauses within the speech segment of a given speaker

    Emotion plays an important role in human beingsā€™ daily lives. Understanding emotions and recognizing how to react to othersā€™ feelings are fundamental to engaging in successful social interactions. Currently, emotion recognition is not only significant in human beingsā€™ daily lives, but also a hot topic in academic research, as new techniques such as emotion recognition from speech context inspires us as to how emotions are related to the content we are uttering. The demand and importance of emotion recognition have highly increased in many applications in recent years, such as video games, human computer interaction, cognitive computing, and affective computing. Emotion recognition can be done from many sources including text, speech, hand, and body gesture as well as facial expression. Presently, most of the emotion recognition methods only use one of these sources. The emotion of human beings changes every second and using a single way to process the emotion recognition may not reflect the emotion correctly. This research is motivated by the desire to understand and evaluate human beingsā€™ emotion from multiple ways such as speech and facial expressions. In this dissertation, multi-sensory emotion recognition has been exploited. The proposed framework can recognize emotion from speech, facial expression, and both of them. There are three important parts in the design of the system: the facial emotion recognizer, the speech emotion recognizer, and the information fusion. The information fusion part uses the results from the speech emotion recognition and facial emotion recognition. Then, a novel weighted method is used to integrate the results, and a final decision of the emotion is given after the fusion. The experiments show that with the weighted fusion methods, the accuracy can be improved to an average of 3.66% compared to fusion without adding weight. The improvement of the recognition rate can reach 18.27% and 5.66% compared to the speech emotion recognition and facial expression recognition, respectively. By improving the emotion recognition accuracy, the proposed multi-sensory emotion recognition system can help to improve the naturalness of human computer interaction

    Exploiting Spatio-Temporal Coherence for Video Object Detection in Robotics

    This paper proposes a method to enhance video object detection for indoor environments in robotics. Concretely, it exploits knowledge about the camera motion between frames to propagate previously detected objects to successive frames. The proposal is rooted in the concepts of planar homography to propose regions of interest where to find objects, and recursive Bayesian filtering to integrate observations over time. The proposal is evaluated on six virtual, indoor environments, accounting for the detection of nine object classes over a total of āˆ¼ 7k frames. Results show that our proposal improves the recall and the F1-score by a factor of 1.41 and 1.27, respectively, as well as it achieves a significant reduction of the object categorization entropy (58.8%) when compared to a two-stage video object detection method used as baseline, at the cost of small time overheads (120 ms) and precision loss (0.92).</p

    Information Theory, Developmental Psychology, and the Baldwin Effect

    As part of the extended evolutionary synthesis, there has recently been a new emphasis on the effects of biological development on genetic inheritance and variation. The exciting new directions taken by those in the community have by a pre-history filled with related ideas that were never given a rigorous foundation or combined coherently. Part of the historical background of the extended synthesis is the work of James Mark Baldwin on his so-called ā€œBaldwin Effect.ā€ Many variant re-interpretations of his work obscure the original meaning of the Baldwin Effect. This paper emphasizes a new approach to the Baldwin Effect, focusing on his work in developmental psychology and how that would impact evolution. We propose a novel population genetics model of the Baldwin Effect. First, the impact of a kind of learning process motivated by motor babbling, in the developmental psychology literature, on evolution; second, that Information-theoretic phenotype reshaping speeds up evolution compared to populations without this kind of learning. The basic idea behind the model is to allow the organism to apply abstraction to his initial phenotype to situate it within one of a few different classes of phenotypes in the local neighborhood of a fitness maximum. The reshaping of the phenotype space thereby allows the organism to reach a nearby fitness maximum. By so doing, valleys in the fitness landscape are leveled out, making a rugged fitness landscape into a set of mesas and plateaus with increasing height. Using this model we can show the first sizeable speed-up for the Baldwin Effect compared to ordinary population genetics. We also introduce an information-theoretic foundation for the Baldwin Effect, which may be of independent interest
