    Gas station flash survey: a method for interviewing drivers

    Interviews and questionnaires are very important techniques to acquire information from the potential user. Surveys are one tool to understand users’ needs which is in particular helpful in the early phases of user interface design processes. To get meaningful information interface designers typically determine the target user group for an application. Most commonly, when designing in-car interfaces, the car drivers are the prime target group. In this paper we suggest a method to involve this group for a quick survey and we report our experience. The distinct features of this method are the location where the survey takes place (the gas station) and the length of the interview (2 to 5 minutes). This place ensures that the people actually use cars and have driven for sometime before the interview. The time is determined due to the task (filling the car) and people typically do not have plans how to spend this time and are happy to use this spare time to answer questions. (author's abstract

    Getting Around When You’re Just Getting By: The Travel Behavior and Transportation Expenditures of Low-Income Adults, MTI Report 10-02

    How much do people with limited resources pay for cars, public transit, and other means of travel? How does their transportation behavior change during periods of falling employment and rising fuel prices? This research uses in-depth interviews with 73 adults to examine how rising transportation costs impact low-income families. The interviews examine four general areas of interest: travel behavior and transportation spending patterns; the costs and benefits of alternative modes of travel; cost management strategies; and opinions about the effect of changing transportation prices on travel behavior. Key findings include: Most low-income household are concerned about their transportation costs. Low-income individuals actively and strategically manage their household resources in order to survive on very limited means and to respond to changes in income or transportation costs. In making mode-choice decisions, low-income travelers—like higher-income travelers—carefully evaluate the costs of travel (time and out-of-pocket expenses) against the benefits of each of the modes. Some low-income individuals in our sample were willing to endure higher transportation expenditures—such as the costs of auto ownership or congestion tolls—if they believed that they currently benefit or would potentially benefit from these increased expenses. Although low-income households find ways to cover their transportation expenditures, many of these strategies had negative effects on households. The report concludes with recommendations on how to increase transportation affordability, minimize the impact that new transportation taxes or fees have on low-income people, and develop new research and data collection to support the previous two efforts

    All-electric LNG a viable alternative to conventional gas turbine driven LNG plant

    The world demand for natural gas which is at an increasing trend has rekindled interest in the production and transportation of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from resource rich areas in Africa, Middle East, Far East, Australia and Russia to customers in Europe, Americas, China and India. The challenges for the future are to produce and transport gas in a cost effective manner to be competitive in the market place. Gas is beginning to play an increasingly important role in energy scenario of the world economy. The easiest ways of getting gas to the market is by pipe lines. However to reach markets far and wide across oceans, gas needs to be converted and transported in liquid form. Competitive pressure and search for economies of scale is driving up the size of LNG facilities and hence the capital requirement of each link of the value chain. Interdependent financing of the various links of the value chain, while maintaining their economic viability, is the challenge that sponsors need to address. The industry is potentially a high risk business due to uncertainty associated with the characteristics of the industry, which calls for high level of investment in an environment of volatility of the price and political and economic changes in the world market. LNG production facilities are becoming larger and larger than ever before to take advantage of economies of scale. These massive plants not only have created new challenges in design, procurement and construction and environment but will create new challenges in operation and maintenance. Innovative technologies and first of a kind equipment applications with a rigorous technology development and a stringent testing plans ensure that the facility will achieve a long term reliable operation. Conventional LNG plants use Gas Turbine as main drivers for refrigerant compressors. To this effect All-Electric LNG has a potential to provide an alternative offer a life cycle advantage over the convention. Hence it would be worthwhile to study the pros and cons and prospects offered by this new technology from an overall life cycle perspective for future of LNG projects.     Puerto Rico relies completely on imported fossil fuels for transportation fuels. This has had negative impacts on the environment and the economy. The Puerto Rico Energy Affairs Administration (PREAA) is interested in adopting an alternative fuels policy similar to the EPA\u27s Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). The alternative fuels that this project focuses on are biodiesel and ethanol. The goal of our project was to determine what federal and state policies exist in the United States and how these fuel policies could be applied to the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico in an effort to introduce biodiesel or ethanol as a transportation fuel

    Mitigating Roadway Disasters in Extreme Flooding Events: A Critical Case Study of Flood Fatalities in Harris County, Texas

    From 1959 – 2009, Texas has annually led the nation in the number of flood fatalities. On average the number of deaths in Texas was three times the amount of the second leading state (Sharif, Hossain, Jackson & Bin-Shafique, 2012). Quantitative studies have attempted to construct the definition of when, how and the likelihood that a person dies in a flood event, why they made the fatal decision to drive, and who is particularly vulnerable to making this decision. This dissertation used a qualitative approach to explore this occurrence in a deeper and more meaningful context. This dissertation includes four research questions. What factors govern drivers’ decision-making during a flood? What social norms about driving and flooding contribute to the risk factor decision? What mitigation measures has the local government implemented to prevent driver fatalities during extreme flooding? What experiences from drivers are missing in current Flood Warning Systems (FWS)? This qualitative dissertation used a historical narrative approach to provide a critical case study of fatalities in Harris County, Texas. The selected storms were Great Flood of 1994, Tropical Storm Allison of 2001, Memorial Day Flood of 2015, Tax Day Flood of 2016, Hurricane Harvey of 2017, and Tropical Storm Imelda of 2019. Data was collected from live broadcasts, online and printed media sources, 97 semi-structured interviews, public government documents and reports as well as social media posts and comments from Twitter and Facebook. Street observations were conducted at the known locations where fatalities occurred for those that either died in their car or abandoned a car and died. This research resulted in the creation of a database of the victims demographics and reasons for driving as well as a database creation of street design characteristics at the fatality locations. All fatalities that occurred in Harris County were mapped, including non-vehicle related fatalities. This dissertation concludes that both driver error and road design error contribute to fatalities. Social norms influence the lack of adequate mitigation from local governments and better Flood Warning Systems could prevent deaths from occurring

    This study systematically examines recent trends in public transit ridership in the U.S. during the 1990s. Specifically, this analysis focuses on agencies that increased ridership during the latter half of the decade. While transit ridership increased steadily by 13 percent nationwide between 1995 and 1999, not all systems experienced ridership growth equally. While some agencies increased ridership dramatically, some did so only minimally, and still others lost riders. What sets these agencies apart from each other?
