    Automated methods of real-time, unobtrusive, human ambulation, activity, and wellness monitoring and data analysis using various algorithmic techniques have been subjects of intense research. The general aim is to devise effective means of addressing the demands of assisted living, rehabilitation, and clinical observation and assessment through sensor-based monitoring. The research studies have resulted in a large amount of literature. This paper presents a holistic articulation of the research studies and offers comprehensive insights along four main axes: distribution of existing studies; monitoring device framework and sensor types; data collection, processing and analysis; and applications, limitations and challenges. The aim is to present a systematic and most complete study of literature in the area in order to identify research gaps and prioritize future research directions

    Radar High Resolution Range & Micro-Doppler Analysis of Human Motions

    In radar imaging it is well known that relative motion or deformation of parts of illuminated objects induce additional features in the Doppler frequency spectra. These features are called micro-Doppler effect and appear as sidebands around the central Doppler frequency. They can provide valuable information about the structure of the moving parts and may be used for identification purposes [1]. Previous papers have mostly focused on ID micro-Doppler analysis [2-4]. In this paper, we propose to emphasize the analysis of such "non stationary targets" using a 2D imaging space, using both the micro-Doppler and a high range resolution analysis. As in 2D-ISAR imaging, range separation enables us to better discriminate the various effects caused by the time varying reflectors. We will focus our study on human motion. We will see how micro-Doppler signature can be used to extract information on pedestrians gait. We will show examples on simulated and experimental data

    Silhouette-based gait recognition using Procrustes shape analysis and elliptic Fourier descriptors

    This paper presents a gait recognition method which combines spatio-temporal motion characteristics, statistical and physical parameters (referred to as STM-SPP) of a human subject for its classification by analysing shape of the subject's silhouette contours using Procrustes shape analysis (PSA) and elliptic Fourier descriptors (EFDs). STM-SPP uses spatio-temporal gait characteristics and physical parameters of human body to resolve similar dissimilarity scores between probe and gallery sequences obtained by PSA. A part-based shape analysis using EFDs is also introduced to achieve robustness against carrying conditions. The classification results by PSA and EFDs are combined, resolving tie in ranking using contour matching based on Hu moments. Experimental results show STM-SPP outperforms several silhouette-based gait recognition methods

    DeepWalking: Enabling Smartphone-based Walking Speed Estimation Using Deep Learning

    Walking speed estimation is an essential component of mobile apps in various fields such as fitness, transportation, navigation, and health-care. Most existing solutions are focused on specialized medical applications that utilize body-worn motion sensors. These approaches do not serve effectively the general use case of numerous apps where the user holding a smartphone tries to find his or her walking speed solely based on smartphone sensors. However, existing smartphone-based approaches fail to provide acceptable precision for walking speed estimation. This leads to a question: is it possible to achieve comparable speed estimation accuracy using a smartphone over wearable sensor based obtrusive solutions? We find the answer from advanced neural networks. In this paper, we present DeepWalking, the first deep learning-based walking speed estimation scheme for smartphone. A deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) is applied to automatically identify and extract the most effective features from the accelerometer and gyroscope data of smartphone and to train the network model for accurate speed estimation. Experiments are performed with 10 participants using a treadmill. The average root-mean-squared-error (RMSE) of estimated walking speed is 0.16m/s which is comparable to the results obtained by state-of-the-art approaches based on a number of body-worn sensors (i.e., RMSE of 0.11m/s). The results indicate that a smartphone can be a strong tool for walking speed estimation if the sensor data are effectively calibrated and supported by advanced deep learning techniques.Comment: 6 pages, 9 figures, published in IEEE Global Communications Conference (GLOBECOM

    Automated design of robust discriminant analysis classifier for foot pressure lesions using kinematic data

    In the recent years, the use of motion tracking systems for acquisition of functional biomechanical gait data, has received increasing interest due to the richness and accuracy of the measured kinematic information. However, costs frequently restrict the number of subjects employed, and this makes the dimensionality of the collected data far higher than the available samples. This paper applies discriminant analysis algorithms to the classification of patients with different types of foot lesions, in order to establish an association between foot motion and lesion formation. With primary attention to small sample size situations, we compare different types of Bayesian classifiers and evaluate their performance with various dimensionality reduction techniques for feature extraction, as well as search methods for selection of raw kinematic variables. Finally, we propose a novel integrated method which fine-tunes the classifier parameters and selects the most relevant kinematic variables simultaneously. Performance comparisons are using robust resampling techniques such as Bootstrap632+632+and k-fold cross-validation. Results from experimentations with lesion subjects suffering from pathological plantar hyperkeratosis, show that the proposed method can lead tosim96sim 96%correct classification rates with less than 10% of the original features

    Mobile Quantification and Therapy Course Tracking for Gait Rehabilitation

    This paper presents a novel autonomous quality metric to quantify the rehabilitations progress of subjects with knee/hip operations. The presented method supports digital analysis of human gait patterns using smartphones. The algorithm related to the autonomous metric utilizes calibrated acceleration, gyroscope and magnetometer signals from seven Inertial Measurement Unit attached on the lower body in order to classify and generate the grading system values. The developed Android application connects the seven Inertial Measurement Units via Bluetooth and performs the data acquisition and processing in real-time. In total nine features per acceleration direction and lower body joint angle are calculated and extracted in real-time to achieve a fast feedback to the user. We compare the classification accuracy and quantification capabilities of Linear Discriminant Analysis, Principal Component Analysis and Naive Bayes algorithms. The presented system is able to classify patients and control subjects with an accuracy of up to 100\%. The outcomes can be saved on the device or transmitted to treating physicians for later control of the subject's improvements and the efficiency of physiotherapy treatments in motor rehabilitation.     Is the timed-up and go test feasible in mobile devices? A systematic review

    The number of older adults is increasing worldwide, and it is expected that by 2050 over 2 billion individuals will be more than 60 years old. Older adults are exposed to numerous pathological problems such as Parkinson’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, post-stroke, and orthopedic disturbances. Several physiotherapy methods that involve measurement of movements, such as the Timed-Up and Go test, can be done to support efficient and effective evaluation of pathological symptoms and promotion of health and well-being. In this systematic review, the authors aim to determine how the inertial sensors embedded in mobile devices are employed for the measurement of the different parameters involved in the Timed-Up and Go test. The main contribution of this paper consists of the identification of the different studies that utilize the sensors available in mobile devices for the measurement of the results of the Timed-Up and Go test. The results show that mobile devices embedded motion sensors can be used for these types of studies and the most commonly used sensors are the magnetometer, accelerometer, and gyroscope available in off-the-shelf smartphones. The features analyzed in this paper are categorized as quantitative, quantitative + statistic, dynamic balance, gait properties, state transitions, and raw statistics.     Wearable sensors system for an improved analysis of freezing of gait in Parkinson's disease using electromyography and inertial signals

    We propose a wearable sensor system for automatic, continuous and ubiquitous analysis of Freezing of Gait (FOG), in patients affected by Parkinson's disease. FOG is an unpredictable gait disorder with different clinical manifestations, as the trembling and the shuffling-like phenotypes, whose underlying pathophysiology is not fully understood yet. Typical trembling-like subtype features are lack of postural adaptation and abrupt trunk inclination, which in general can increase the fall probability. The targets of this work are detecting the FOG episodes, distinguishing the phenotype and analyzing the muscle activity during and outside FOG, toward a deeper insight in the disorder pathophysiology and the assessment of the fall risk associated to the FOG subtype. To this aim, gyroscopes and surface electromyography integrated in wearable devices sense simultaneously movements and action potentials of antagonist leg muscles. Dedicated algorithms allow the timely detection of the FOG episode and, for the first time, the automatic distinction of the FOG phenotypes, which can enable associating a fall risk to the subtype. Thanks to the possibility of detecting muscles contractions and stretching exactly during FOG, a deeper insight into the pathophysiological underpinnings of the different phenotypes can be achieved, which is an innovative approach with respect to the state of art
