A Comparative study of Arabic handwritten characters invariant feature
This paper is practically interested in the unchangeable feature of Arabic
handwritten character. It presents results of comparative study achieved on
certain features extraction techniques of handwritten character, based on Hough
transform, Fourier transform, Wavelet transform and Gabor Filter. Obtained
results show that Hough Transform and Gabor filter are insensible to the
rotation and translation, Fourier Transform is sensible to the rotation but
insensible to the translation, in contrast to Hough Transform and Gabor filter,
Wavelets Transform is sensitive to the rotation as well as to the translation
Curved Gabor Filters for Fingerprint Image Enhancement
Gabor filters play an important role in many application areas for the
enhancement of various types of images and the extraction of Gabor features.
For the purpose of enhancing curved structures in noisy images, we introduce
curved Gabor filters which locally adapt their shape to the direction of flow.
These curved Gabor filters enable the choice of filter parameters which
increase the smoothing power without creating artifacts in the enhanced image.
In this paper, curved Gabor filters are applied to the curved ridge and valley
structure of low-quality fingerprint images. First, we combine two orientation
field estimation methods in order to obtain a more robust estimation for very
noisy images. Next, curved regions are constructed by following the respective
local orientation and they are used for estimating the local ridge frequency.
Lastly, curved Gabor filters are defined based on curved regions and they are
applied for the enhancement of low-quality fingerprint images. Experimental
results on the FVC2004 databases show improvements of this approach in
comparison to state-of-the-art enhancement methods
Biometrics-as-a-Service: A Framework to Promote Innovative Biometric Recognition in the Cloud
Biometric recognition, or simply biometrics, is the use of biological
attributes such as face, fingerprints or iris in order to recognize an
individual in an automated manner. A key application of biometrics is
authentication; i.e., using said biological attributes to provide access by
verifying the claimed identity of an individual. This paper presents a
framework for Biometrics-as-a-Service (BaaS) that performs biometric matching
operations in the cloud, while relying on simple and ubiquitous consumer
devices such as smartphones. Further, the framework promotes innovation by
providing interfaces for a plurality of software developers to upload their
matching algorithms to the cloud. When a biometric authentication request is
submitted, the system uses a criteria to automatically select an appropriate
matching algorithm. Every time a particular algorithm is selected, the
corresponding developer is rendered a micropayment. This creates an innovative
and competitive ecosystem that benefits both software developers and the
consumers. As a case study, we have implemented the following: (a) an ocular
recognition system using a mobile web interface providing user access to a
biometric authentication service, and (b) a Linux-based virtual machine
environment used by software developers for algorithm development and
submission
Gabor Barcodes for Medical Image Retrieval
In recent years, advances in medical imaging have led to the emergence of
massive databases, containing images from a diverse range of modalities. This
has significantly heightened the need for automated annotation of the images on
one side, and fast and memory-efficient content-based image retrieval systems
on the other side. Binary descriptors have recently gained more attention as a
potential vehicle to achieve these goals. One of the recently introduced binary
descriptors for tagging of medical images are Radon barcodes (RBCs) that are
driven from Radon transform via local thresholding. Gabor transform is also a
powerful transform to extract texture-based information. Gabor features have
exhibited robustness against rotation, scale, and also photometric
disturbances, such as illumination changes and image noise in many
applications. This paper introduces Gabor Barcodes (GBCs), as a novel framework
for the image annotation. To find the most discriminative GBC for a given query
image, the effects of employing Gabor filters with different parameters, i.e.,
different sets of scales and orientations, are investigated, resulting in
different barcode lengths and retrieval performances. The proposed method has
been evaluated on the IRMA dataset with 193 classes comprising of 12,677 x-ray
images for indexing, and 1,733 x-rays images for testing. A total error score

An Active Pattern Recognition Architecture for Mobile Robots
An active, attentionally-modulated recognition architecture is proposed for object recognition and scene analysis. The proposed architecture forms part of navigation and trajectory planning modules for mobile robots. Key characteristics of the system include movement planning and execution based on environmental factors and internal goal definitions. Real-time implementation of the system is based on space-variant representation of the visual field, as well as an optimal visual processing scheme utilizing separate and parallel channels for the extraction of boundaries and stimulus qualities. A spatial and temporal grouping module (VWM) allows for scene scanning, multi-object segmentation, and featural/object priming. VWM is used to modulate a tn~ectory formation module capable of redirecting the focus of spatial attention. Finally, an object recognition module based on adaptive resonance theory is interfaced through VWM to the visual processing module.
