    Quality assessment technique for ubiquitous software and middleware

    The new paradigm of computing or information systems is ubiquitous computing systems. The technology-oriented issues of ubiquitous computing systems have made researchers pay much attention to the feasibility study of the technologies rather than building quality assurance indices or guidelines. In this context, measuring quality is the key to developing high-quality ubiquitous computing products. For this reason, various quality models have been defined, adopted and enhanced over the years, for example, the need for one recognised standard quality model (ISO/IEC 9126) is the result of a consensus for a software quality model on three levels: characteristics, sub-characteristics, and metrics. However, it is very much unlikely that this scheme will be directly applicable to ubiquitous computing environments which are considerably different to conventional software, trailing a big concern which is being given to reformulate existing methods, and especially to elaborate new assessment techniques for ubiquitous computing environments. This paper selects appropriate quality characteristics for the ubiquitous computing environment, which can be used as the quality target for both ubiquitous computing product evaluation processes ad development processes. Further, each of the quality characteristics has been expanded with evaluation questions and metrics, in some cases with measures. In addition, this quality model has been applied to the industrial setting of the ubiquitous computing environment. These have revealed that while the approach was sound, there are some parts to be more developed in the future

    DIVERSE: a Software Toolkit to Integrate Distributed Simulations with Heterogeneous Virtual Environments

    We present DIVERSE (Device Independent Virtual Environments- Reconfigurable, Scalable, Extensible), which is a modular collection of complimentary software packages that we have developed to facilitate the creation of distributed operator-in-the-loop simulations. In DIVERSE we introduce a novel implementation of remote shared memory (distributed shared memory) that uses Internet Protocol (IP) networks. We also introduce a new method that automatically extends hardware drivers (not in the operating system kernel driver sense) into inter-process and Internet hardware services. Using DIVERSE, a program can display in a CAVE™, ImmersaDesk™, head mounted display (HMD), desktop or laptop without modification. We have developed a method of configuring user programs at run-time by loading dynamic shared objects (DSOs), in contrast to the more common practice of creating interpreted configuration languages. We find that by loading DSOs the development time, complexity and size of DIVERSE and DIVERSE user applications is significantly reduced. Configurations to support different I/O devices, device emulators, visual displays, and any component of a user application including interaction techniques, can be changed at run-time by loading different sets of DIVERSE DSOs. In addition, interpreted run-time configuration parsers have been implemented using DIVERSE DSOs; new ones can be created as needed. DIVERSE is free software, licensed under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL) and the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL) licenses. We describe the DIVERSE architecture and demonstrate how DIVERSE was used in the development of a specific application, an operator-in-the-loop Navy ship-board crane simulator, which runs unmodified on a desktop computer and/or in a CAVE with motion base motion queuing

    Application for managing container-based software development environments

    Abstract. Virtualizing the software development process can enhance efficiency through unified, remotely managed environments. Docker containers, a popular technology in software development, are widely used for application testing and deployment. This thesis examines the use of containers as cloud-based development environments. This study explores the history and implementation of container-based virtualization before presenting containers as a novel cloud-based software development environment. Virtual containers, like virtual machines, have been extensively used in software development for code testing but not as development environments. Containers are also prevalent in the final stages of software production, specifically in the distribution and deployment of completed applications. In the practical part of the thesis, an application is implemented to improve the usability of a container-based development environment, addressing challenges in adopting new work environments. The work was conducted for a private company, and multiple experts provided input. The management application enhanced the container-based development environment’s efficiency by improving user rights management, virtual container management, and user interface. Additionally, the new management tools reduced training time for new employees by 50%, facilitating their integration into the organization. Container-based development environments with efficient management tools provide a secure, efficient, and unified platform for large-scale software development. Virtual containers also hold potential for future improvements in energy-saving strategies and organizational work method harmonization and integration.Sovellus konttipohjaisten ohjelmistonkehitysympäristöjen hallintaan. Tässä opinnäytetyössä tarkastellaan konttien käyttöä pilvipohjaisina kehitysympäristöinä. Tämä tutkimus tutkii konttipohjaisen virtualisoinnin historiaa ja toteutusta, jonka jälkeen esitellään konttien käyttöä uudenlaisena pilvipohjaisena ohjelmistokehitysympäristönä. Virtuaalisia kontteja, kuten virtuaalikoneita, on käytetty laajasti ohjelmistokehityksessä kooditestauksessa, mutta ei kehitysympäristöinä. Kontit ovat myös yleisiä ohjelmistotuotannon loppuvaiheissa, erityisesti valmiiden sovellusten jakelussa ja käyttöönotossa. Opinnäytetyön käytännön osassa toteutetaan konttipohjaisen kehitysympäristön käytettävyyttä parantava sovellus, joka vastaa uusien työympäristöjen käyttöönoton haasteisiin. Työ suoritettiin yksityiselle yritykselle, ja sen suunnitteluun osallistui useita asiantuntijoita. Hallintasovellus lisäsi konttipohjaisen kehitysympäristön tehokkuutta parantamalla käyttäjäoikeuksien hallintaa, virtuaalisen kontin hallintaa ja käyttöliittymää. Lisäksi uudet hallintatyökalut lyhensivät uusien työntekijöiden koulutusaikaa 50%, mikä helpotti heidän integroitumistaan organisaatioon.     This thesis details the design and development of a new messaging system for use in the mobile space. This messaging system consists of one back-end server, an API, a proxy server, client components, and a website. Developing such a system for the mobile space is a challenge, however, due to the unique characteristics found in the mobile space. Solutions to overcome these challenges are derived from RESTful web services and cloud computing technologies. Furthermore, the HTTP and CoAP protocols are explored for use in this messaging system. Experiments are then conducted to derive the most optimal protocol. For the purposes of testing this messaging system, two adaptive application management features are developed and provided through the system to the mobile development community. The rst feature is GUI Menu Ordering, which allows developers to adapt their application menu's automatically depending on user usage. The second feature is Proficiency User Modeling, which allows developers to automatically con gure their applications depending on user use behavior style. Results show the successful development of an event messaging system. In terms of the protocols CoAP surpasses HTTP in terms of performance and data consumption. However, the addition of a required CoAP proxy server a ects performance and client/server data consumption. Thus CoAP becomes slower than HTTP, but consumes less data if only the client data is measured. Furthermore, results show that if encryption is used there is an a ect. CoAP with encryption remains faster than HTTPS, even with a CoAP proxy server

    Windows .NET Network Distributed Basic Local Alignment Search Toolkit (W.ND-BLAST)

    BACKGROUND: BLAST is one of the most common and useful tools for Genetic Research. This paper describes a software application we have termed Windows .NET Distributed Basic Local Alignment Search Toolkit (W.ND-BLAST), which enhances the BLAST utility by improving usability, fault recovery, and scalability in a Windows desktop environment. Our goal was to develop an easy to use, fault tolerant, high-throughput BLAST solution that incorporates a comprehensive BLAST result viewer with curation and annotation functionality. RESULTS: W.ND-BLAST is a comprehensive Windows-based software toolkit that targets researchers, including those with minimal computer skills, and provides the ability increase the performance of BLAST by distributing BLAST queries to any number of Windows based machines across local area networks (LAN). W.ND-BLAST provides intuitive Graphic User Interfaces (GUI) for BLAST database creation, BLAST execution, BLAST output evaluation and BLAST result exportation. This software also provides several layers of fault tolerance and fault recovery to prevent loss of data if nodes or master machines fail. This paper lays out the functionality of W.ND-BLAST. W.ND-BLAST displays close to 100% performance efficiency when distributing tasks to 12 remote computers of the same performance class. A high throughput BLAST job which took 662.68 minutes (11 hours) on one average machine was completed in 44.97 minutes when distributed to 17 nodes, which included lower performance class machines. Finally, there is a comprehensive high-throughput BLAST Output Viewer (BOV) and Annotation Engine components, which provides comprehensive exportation of BLAST hits to text files, annotated fasta files, tables, or association files. CONCLUSION: W.ND-BLAST provides an interactive tool that allows scientists to easily utilizing their available computing resources for high throughput and comprehensive sequence analyses.     Management, design and developement of a mesh generation environment using open source software

    In this paper we present an object oriented implementation of a general-purpose mesh generation environment for geometry-based simulations. The aim of this application is to unify available legacy code and new research algorithms in only one mesh generation suite. We focus in two aspects that can be of the general interest for managers, designers and developers of similar projects. On the one hand, we analyze the software engineering practices that we have followed in the management and development process. In addition, we detail and discuss the Open Source tools and libraries that we have used. On the other hand, we discuss the design and the data structure of the environment. In particular, we first summarize the topological and geometrical representation. Second, we detail our implementation of the hierarchical mesh generation structure. Third we present our design to mediate collaboration between classes. Finally, we present some of the mesh generation features to show the capabilities of the environment

    Web-based application developers face a dizzying array of platforms, languages, frameworks and technical artifacts to choose from. We survey, classify, and compare technologies supporting Web application development. The classification is based on (1) foundational technologies; (2)integration with other information sources; and (3) dynamic content generation. We further survey and classify software engineering techniques and tools that have been adopted from traditional programming into Web programming. We conclude that, although the infrastructure problems of the Web have largely been solved, the cacophony of technologies for Web-based applications reflects the lack of a solid model tailored for this domain.Comment: 43 page
