Numerical modelling of soil erosion susceptibility in the Maltese Islands using geographic information systems and the Revised Uni- versal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE)
The Mediterranean region is subject to
various factors that exacerbate soil erosion pressures.
Such factors include agricultural land fragmentation and
abandonment, unsustainable agricultural practices and
rapid urbanisation. Soil erosion in the Maltese Islands
has been identi ed as a predominating land degradation
process and a major threat to the sustainability of
the agricultural sector. The small scale of the Maltese
Islands facilitates an in detail national study of soil
erosion processes and contributing socio-economic dynamics.
The research methods, erosion rate values and
controlling dynamics discussed in this work have a particular
relevance to the Mediterranean area.peer-reviewe
Deep Space Network information system architecture study
The purpose of this article is to describe an architecture for the Deep Space Network (DSN) information system in the years 2000-2010 and to provide guidelines for its evolution during the 1990s. The study scope is defined to be from the front-end areas at the antennas to the end users (spacecraft teams, principal investigators, archival storage systems, and non-NASA partners). The architectural vision provides guidance for major DSN implementation efforts during the next decade. A strong motivation for the study is an expected dramatic improvement in information-systems technologies, such as the following: computer processing, automation technology (including knowledge-based systems), networking and data transport, software and hardware engineering, and human-interface technology. The proposed Ground Information System has the following major features: unified architecture from the front-end area to the end user; open-systems standards to achieve interoperability; DSN production of level 0 data; delivery of level 0 data from the Deep Space Communications Complex, if desired; dedicated telemetry processors for each receiver; security against unauthorized access and errors; and highly automated monitor and control
Urban food strategies in Central and Eastern Europe: what's specific and what's at stake?
Integrating a larger set of instruments into
Rural Development Programmes implied an increasing
focus on monitoring and evaluation. Against the highly
diversified experience with regard to implementation
of policy instruments the Common Monitoring
and Evaluation Framework has been set up by the EU
Commission as a strategic and streamlined method of
evaluating programmesâ impacts. Its indicator-based
approach mainly reflects the concept of a linear,
measure-based intervention logic that falls short of
the true nature of RDP operation and impact capacity
on rural changes. Besides the different phases of the
policy process, i.e. policy design, delivery and evaluation,
the regional context with its specific set of challenges
and opportunities seems critical to the understanding
and improvement of programme performance.
In particular the role of local actors can hardly
be grasped by quantitative indicators alone, but has
to be addressed by assessing processes of social
innovation. This shift in the evaluation focus underpins
the need to take account of regional implementation
specificities and processes of social innovation as
decisive elements for programme performance.

Using airborne LiDAR Survey to explore historic-era archaeological landscapes of Montserrat in the eastern Caribbean
This article describes what appears to be the first archaeological application of airborne LiDAR survey to historic-era landscapes in the Caribbean archipelago, on the island of Montserrat. LiDAR is proving invaluable in extending the reach of traditional pedestrian survey into less favorable areas, such as those covered by dense neotropical forest and by ashfall from the past two decades of active eruptions by the SoufriĂšre Hills volcano, and to sites in localities that are inaccessible on account of volcanic dangers. Emphasis is placed on two aspects of the research: first, the importance of ongoing, real-time interaction between the LiDAR analyst and the archaeological team in the field; and second, the advantages of exploiting the full potential of the three-dimensional LiDAR point cloud data for purposes of the visualization of archaeological sites and features
An Integrated Assessment Framework for Water Resources Management: A DSS Tool and a Pilot Study Application
Decision making for the management of water resources is a complex and difficult task. This is due to the complex socio-economic system that involves a large number of interest groups pursuing multiple and conflicting objectives, within an often intricate legislative framework. Several Decision Support Systems have been developed but very few have indeed proved to be effective and truly operational. MULINO (Multisectoral, Integrated and Operational Decision Support System for Sustainable Use of Water Resources at the Catchment Scale) is a project funded under the Fifth Framework Programme of the European Research and the key action line dedicated to operational management schemes and decision support system for sustainable use of water resources. The MULINO DSS (mDSS) integrates hydrological models with multi-criteria decision methods and adopts the DPSIR (Driving Force â Pressure â State â Impact â Response) framework developed by the European Environment Agency. The DPSIR was converted from a static reporting scheme into a dynamic framework for integrated assessment modelling (IAM) and multi-criteria evaluation procedures.
