Ellipse-preserving Hermite interpolation and subdivision
We introduce a family of piecewise-exponential functions that have the
Hermite interpolation property. Our design is motivated by the search for an
effective scheme for the joint interpolation of points and associated tangents
on a curve with the ability to perfectly reproduce ellipses. We prove that the
proposed Hermite functions form a Riesz basis and that they reproduce
prescribed exponential polynomials. We present a method based on Green's
functions to unravel their multi-resolution and approximation-theoretic
properties. Finally, we derive the corresponding vector and scalar subdivision
schemes, which lend themselves to a fast implementation. The proposed vector
scheme is interpolatory and level-dependent, but its asymptotic behaviour is
the same as the classical cubic Hermite spline algorithm. The same convergence
properties---i.e., fourth order of approximation---are hence ensured
Canonical sets of best L1-approximation
In mathematics, the term approximation usually means either interpolation on a point set or approximation with respect to a given distance. There is a concept, which joins the two approaches together, and this is the concept of characterization of the best approximants via interpolation. It turns out that for some large classes of functions the best approximants with respect to a certain distance can be constructed by interpolation on a point set that does not depend on the choice of the function to be approximated. Such point sets are called canonical sets of best approximation. The present paper summarizes results on canonical sets of best L1-approximation with emphasis on multivariate interpolation and best L1-approximation by blending functions. The best L1-approximants are characterized as transfinite interpolants on canonical sets. The notion of a Haar-Chebyshev system in the multivariate case is discussed also. In this context, it is shown that some multivariate interpolation spaces share properties of univariate Haar-Chebyshev systems. We study also the problem of best one-sided multivariate L 1-approximation by sums of univariate functions. Explicit constructions of best one-sided L1-approximants give rise to well-known and new inequalities

Rational Krylov subspace methods for phi-functions in exponential integrators
Exponential integrators are a class of numerical methods for stiff systems of differential equations which require the computation of products of so-called matrix phi-functions and vectors. In this thesis, we consider the approximation of these matrix functions times some vector by rational and extended Krylov subspace methods. For arbitrary matrices with a field of values in the left complex half-plane, a uniform approximation is obtained that predicts a sublinear convergence
Grid generation for the solution of partial differential equations
A general survey of grid generators is presented with a concern for understanding why grids are necessary, how they are applied, and how they are generated. After an examination of the need for meshes, the overall applications setting is established with a categorization of the various connectivity patterns. This is split between structured grids and unstructured meshes. Altogether, the categorization establishes the foundation upon which grid generation techniques are developed. The two primary categories are algebraic techniques and partial differential equation techniques. These are each split into basic parts, and accordingly are individually examined in some detail. In the process, the interrelations between the various parts are accented. From the established background in the primary techniques, consideration is shifted to the topic of interactive grid generation and then to adaptive meshes. The setting for adaptivity is established with a suitable means to monitor severe solution behavior. Adaptive grids are considered first and are followed by adaptive triangular meshes. Then the consideration shifts to the temporal coupling between grid generators and PDE-solvers. To conclude, a reflection upon the discussion, herein, is given
