Advanced photonic and electronic systems WILGA 2018
WILGA annual symposium on advanced photonic and electronic systems has been organized by young scientist for young scientists since two decades. It traditionally gathers around 400 young researchers and their tutors. Ph.D students and graduates present their recent achievements during well attended oral sessions. Wilga is a very good digest of Ph.D. works carried out at technical universities in electronics and photonics, as well as information sciences throughout Poland and some neighboring countries. Publishing patronage over Wilga keep Elektronika technical journal by SEP, IJET and Proceedings of SPIE. The latter world editorial series publishes annually more than 200 papers from Wilga. Wilga 2018 was the XLII edition of this meeting. The following topical tracks were distinguished: photonics, electronics, information technologies and system research. MATLAB
A well-known statement says that the PID controller is the "bread and butter" of the control engineer. This is indeed true, from a scientific standpoint. However, nowadays, in the era of computer science, when the paper and pencil have been replaced by the keyboard and the display of computers, one may equally say that MATLAB is the "bread" in the above statement. AN INTELLIGENT NAVIGATION SYSTEM FOR AN AUTONOMOUS UNDERWATER VEHICLE
The work in this thesis concerns with the development of a novel multisensor data fusion
(MSDF) technique, which combines synergistically Kalman filtering, fuzzy logic
and genetic algorithm approaches, aimed to enhance the accuracy of an autonomous
underwater vehicle (AUV) navigation system, formed by an integration of global positioning
system and inertial navigation system (GPS/INS).
The Kalman filter has been a popular method for integrating the data produced
by the GPS and INS to provide optimal estimates of AUVs position and attitude. In
this thesis, a sequential use of a linear Kalman filter and extended Kalman filter is
proposed. The former is used to fuse the data from a variety of INS sensors whose
output is used as an input to the later where integration with GPS data takes place.
The use of an adaptation scheme based on fuzzy logic approaches to cope with the
divergence problem caused by the insufficiently known a priori filter statistics is also
explored. The choice of fuzzy membership functions for the adaptation scheme is first
carried out using a heuristic approach. Single objective and multiobjective genetic
algorithm techniques are then used to optimize the parameters of the membership
functions with respect to a certain performance criteria in order to improve the overall
accuracy of the integrated navigation system. Results are presented that show
that the proposed algorithms can provide a significant improvement in the overall
navigation performance of an autonomous underwater vehicle navigation.
The proposed technique is known to be the first method used in relation to AUV
navigation technology and is thus considered as a major contribution thereof.J&S Marine Ltd.,

Constant power - continuously variable transmission (CP-CVT): Optimisation and simulation
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.A novel continuously variable transmission has previously been designed that is capable of addressing a number of concerns within the automotive industry such as reduced emissions. At the commencement of this research, the design was in the early stages of development and little attempt had been previously made to optimise the design to meet specific measurable targets. This thesis utilises and modifies several design approaches to take the design from the concept stage to a usable product. Several optimisation techniques are adapted and created to analyse the CVT from both a design and tribological prospective. A specially designed optimisation algorithm has been created that is capable of quickly improving each critical component dimension in parallel to fulfil multiple objectives. This algorithm can be easily adapted for alternative applications and objectives.
The validity of the optimised design is demonstrated through a simulation-tool that has been created in order to model the behaviour of the CVT in a real automotive environment using multiple fundamental theories and models including tire friction and traction behaviour. This powerful simulation tool is capable of predicting transmission and vehicular behaviour, and demonstrates a very good correlation with real-world data. A design critique is then performed that assesses the current state of the CVT design, and looks to address some of the concerns that have been found through the various methods used. A specific prototype design is also presented, based on the optimisation techniques developed, although the actual creation of a prototype is not presented here.
Additional complementary research looks at the accuracy of the tire friction models through the use of a specially design tire friction test rig. Furthermore, a monitoring system is proposed for this particular CVT design (and similar) that is capable of continuously checking the contact film thickness between adjacent elements to ensure that there is sufficient lubricant to avoid metal-on-metal contact. The system, which is based around capacitance, requires the knowledge of the behaviour of the lubricant’s permittivity at increased pressure. Rule-Based System Architecting of Earth Observing Systems: Earth Science Decadal Survey
This paper presents a methodology to explore the architectural trade space of Earth observing satellite systems, and applies it to the Earth Science Decadal Survey. The architecting problem is formulated as a combinatorial optimization problem with three sets of architectural decisions: instrument selection, assignment of instruments to satellites, and mission scheduling. A computational tool was created to automatically synthesize architectures based on valid combinations of options for these three decisions and evaluate them according to several figures of merit, including satisfaction of program requirements, data continuity, affordability, and proxies for fairness, technical, and programmatic risk. A population-based heuristic search algorithm is used to search the trade space. The novelty of the tool is that it uses a rule-based expert system to model the knowledge-intensive components of the problem, such as scientific requirements, and to capture the nonlinear positive and negative interactions between instruments (synergies and interferences), which drive both requirement satisfaction and cost. The tool is first demonstrated on the past NASA Earth Observing System program and then applied to the Decadal Survey.
