Behavioural pattern identification and prediction in intelligent environments
In this paper, the application of soft computing techniques in prediction of an occupant's behaviour in an inhabited intelligent environment is addressed. In this research, daily activities of elderly people who live in their own homes suffering from dementia are studied. Occupancy sensors are used to extract the movement patterns of the occupant. The occupancy data is then converted into temporal sequences of activities which are eventually used to predict the occupant behaviour. To build the prediction model, different dynamic recurrent neural networks are investigated. Recurrent neural networks have shown a great ability in finding the temporal relationships of input patterns. The experimental results show that non-linear autoregressive network with exogenous inputs model correctly extracts the long term prediction patterns of the occupant and outperformed the Elman network. The results presented here are validated using data generated from a simulator and real environments
Multi-time-horizon Solar Forecasting Using Recurrent Neural Network
The non-stationarity characteristic of the solar power renders traditional
point forecasting methods to be less useful due to large prediction errors.
This results in increased uncertainties in the grid operation, thereby
negatively affecting the reliability and increased cost of operation. This
research paper proposes a unified architecture for multi-time-horizon
predictions for short and long-term solar forecasting using Recurrent Neural
Networks (RNN). The paper describes an end-to-end pipeline to implement the
architecture along with the methods to test and validate the performance of the
prediction model. The results demonstrate that the proposed method based on the
unified architecture is effective for multi-horizon solar forecasting and
achieves a lower root-mean-squared prediction error compared to the previous
best-performing methods which use one model for each time-horizon. The proposed
method enables multi-horizon forecasts with real-time inputs, which have a high
potential for practical applications in the evolving smart grid.Comment: Accepted at: IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE

Fuzzy heterogeneous neural networks for signal forecasting
Fuzzy heterogeneous neural networks are recently introduced models based on neurons accepting heterogeneous inputs (i.e. mixtures of numerical and non-numerical information possibly with missing data) with either crisp or imprecise character, which can be coupled with classical neurons. This paper compares the effectiveness of this kind of networks with time-delay and recurrent architectures that use classical neuron models and training algorithms in a signal forecasting problem, in the context of finding models of the central nervous system controllers.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Industrial process monitoring by means of recurrent neural networks and Self Organizing Maps
Industrial manufacturing plants often suffer from reliability problems during their day-to-day operations which
have the potential for causing a great impact on the effectiveness and performance of the overall process and the
sub-processes involved. Time-series forecasting of critical industrial signals presents itself as a way to reduce this
impact by extracting knowledge regarding the internal dynamics of the process and advice any process deviations
before it affects the productive process. In this paper, a novel industrial condition monitoring approach based on the
combination of Self Organizing Maps for operating point codification and Recurrent Neural Networks for critical signal
modeling is proposed. The combination of both methods presents a strong synergy, the information of the operating
condition given by the interpretation of the maps helps the model to improve generalization, one of the drawbacks of
recurrent networks, while assuring high accuracy and precision rates. Finally, the complete methodology, in terms of
performance and effectiveness is validated experimentally with real data from a copper rod industrial plant.Postprint (published version
Artificial neural networks in geospatial analysis
Artificial neural networks are computational models widely used in geospatial analysis for data classification, change detection, clustering, function approximation, and forecasting or prediction. There are many types of neural networks based on learning paradigm and network architectures. Their use is expected to grow with increasing availability of massive data from remote sensing and mobile platforms
Unsupervised Heart-rate Estimation in Wearables With Liquid States and A Probabilistic Readout
Heart-rate estimation is a fundamental feature of modern wearable devices. In
this paper we propose a machine intelligent approach for heart-rate estimation
from electrocardiogram (ECG) data collected using wearable devices. The novelty
of our approach lies in (1) encoding spatio-temporal properties of ECG signals
directly into spike train and using this to excite recurrently connected
spiking neurons in a Liquid State Machine computation model; (2) a novel
learning algorithm; and (3) an intelligently designed unsupervised readout
based on Fuzzy c-Means clustering of spike responses from a subset of neurons
(Liquid states), selected using particle swarm optimization. Our approach
differs from existing works by learning directly from ECG signals (allowing
personalization), without requiring costly data annotations. Additionally, our
approach can be easily implemented on state-of-the-art spiking-based
neuromorphic systems, offering high accuracy, yet significantly low energy
footprint, leading to an extended battery life of wearable devices. We
validated our approach with CARLsim, a GPU accelerated spiking neural network
simulator modeling Izhikevich spiking neurons with Spike Timing Dependent
Plasticity (STDP) and homeostatic scaling. A range of subjects are considered
from in-house clinical trials and public ECG databases. Results show high
accuracy and low energy footprint in heart-rate estimation across subjects with
and without cardiac irregularities, signifying the strong potential of this
approach to be integrated in future wearable devices.Comment: 51 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables, 95 references. Under submission at
