Material Culture and (Forced) Migration argues that materiality is a fundamental dimension of migration. During journeys of migration, people take things with them, or they lose, find and engage things along the way. Movements themselves are framed by objects such as borders, passports, tents, camp infrastructures, boats and mobile phones. This volume brings together chapters that are based on research into a broad range of movements – from the study of forced migration and displacement to the analysis of retirement migration. What ties the chapters together is the perspective of material culture and an understanding of materiality that does not reduce objects to mere symbols. New spirituality, atheism, and authenticity in Finnish underground rap

In this dissertation, I study the discourses of new spirituality, atheism, and authenticity in Finnish underground rap in the twenty-first century. The study maps the worldviews and audiovisual aesthetics of four Finnish artists, Ameeba, Khid, Julma Henri, and RPK (the latter two forming the duo Euro Crack), while exploring larger issues such as contemporary Western religious trends and the relationship between artists, their audience, and the music industry. The study’s data consist of field research (ten interviews, observation at concerts and in social media 2013–2017), and sonic and audiovisual material (recordings, three music videos). Theoretically, the study draws from religious studies theories on Western alternative spirituality and atheism, popular musicology, hip hop studies, and theories on musical authenticity. Methodologically, the study relies on ethnographic data collection, discourse analysis, and close reading. The study indicates that while the four Finnish rappers emphasize the individuality of their worldviews, their views reflect a mixture of ideas and traditions present in contemporary Western religious landscape, including non-dualistic Eastern religions, New Age environmentalism, and scientific atheism. The artists also outline an aesthetic for their music and underground rap more generally as defying rap music, pop music, and music industry norms, as independent music making, and as drawing from alternative electronic genres and deeper philosophical content. The artists construct authenticity by claiming that their music reflects their personal worldviews and aesthetic preferences. Further, the study increases understanding about the interrelationship of rap and postmodern worldviews and advances research on the connections between popular music and religion.Uushenkisyys, ateismi ja autenttisuus suomalaisessa underground-rapissa Väitöskirjassani tutkin 2010-luvun suomenkielistä underground-rap-musiikkia ja siinä ilmeneviä autenttisuuden, uushenkisyyden ja ateismin diskursseja. Tutkimuksen kohteena on neljä suomalaista rap-artistia (Ameeba, Khid, Julma Henri, sekä RPK, joka Julma Henrin kanssa muodostaa Euro Crack -duon), ja heidän ilmaisussaan rakentuvat maailmankatsomukset ja audiovisuaalinen estetiikka. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan myös laajempia kysymyksiä liittyen länsimaiseen uskontokehitykseen sekä artistien suhteeseen yleisöön ja musiikkialaan. Tutkimuksen aineisto koostuu kenttätutkimuksesta (10 haastattelua, havainnointi konserteissa ja sosiaalisessa mediassa 2013–2017) sekä äänellisestä ja audiovisuaalisesta materiaalista (äänitteet, kolme musiikkivideota). Tutkimuksen teoreettinen viitekehys hyödyntää uskontotieteen teorioita koskien länsimaista uushenkisyyttä ja ateismia, populaarimusiikintutkimusta, hiphop-tutkimusta, sekä teorioita autenttisuudesta. Menetelmällisesti tutkimus nojaa etnografisiin aineistonkeruumetodeihin sekä diskurssianalyysiin ja lähilukuun. An aesthetic for sustainable interactions in product-service systems?

The paper investigates the barriers that affect the attractiveness and acceptation of eco-efficient PSS alternatives, and opens the debate on the aesthetic of eco-efficient PSS, and the way in which aesthetic could enhance some specific inner qualities of this kinds of innovations. Integrating insights from semiotics, the paper outlines some first research hypothesis on how the aesthetic elements of an eco-efficient PSS could facilitate user attraction, acceptation and satisfaction

Diaspora and Transnationalism: Concepts, Theories and Methods

Diaspora and transnationalism are widely used concepts in academic as well as political discourses. Although originally referring to quite different phenomena, they increasingly overlap today. Such inflation of meanings goes hand in hand with a danger of essentialising collective identities. This book therefore analyses diaspora and transnationalism as research perspectives rather than as characteristics of particular social groups. The contributions focus on conceptual uses, theoretical challenges and methodological innovations in the study of social ties that transcend nation and state boundaries. The Narrative Role of Films in Four Contemporary Novels

In my doctoral dissertation I explore the narrative function of cinema in twenty-first century fiction. In this study literary representations of films are regarded as a narrative strategy through which literary texts accentuate, reflect, and give rise to their principal themes and questions. Since filmic insertions have a noticeable impact upon the narrative construction and hence turn out to be pivotal in the reader's inferential process, I also investigate this narrative phenomenon in the context of reader's meaning-making. I have chosen four novels for my study, namely The Book of Illusions (2002) by Paul Auster, Point Omega (2010) by Don DeLillo, The Understudy (2005) by David Nicholls, and The Ice Cream Man by Katri Lipson, published in Finnish in 2012 as Jäätelökauppias and translated into English in 2014. In these works the dominant meanings are closely linked to the representations of cinema, and films appear both at the discourse level and within the fictional world. Owing to the diversity of the chosen texts in terms of style and genre, my study provides a comprehensive view of the ways in which recent fiction has utilised "moving images" in narration. In this study I draw on the theoretical concepts of intersubjectivity, framing, mise en abyme, possible worlds theory, and indexicality in order to analyse the narrative function of films in the novels and the subsequent effects in the reader's hermeneutic process. I demonstrate that the literary use of cinema greatly affects narration and the reading experience: it disturbs the conventional narrative hierarchy and the subordination between the primary level and the embedded one. Simultaneously, it violates ontological stability, which separates the fictional "real" from the filmic "unreal". My case studies testify to the importance of the reader's role as an active interpreter whose knowledge of and experiences with cinema contribute to the textual processing of the novels. By pointing out the intricate interaction between audiovisual and verbal sign systems in these texts, I show how the audiovisual upsurge in contemporary society has altered how we read literature.Viime vuosisalla käynnistynyt audiovisuaalisen median räjähdysmäinen kasvu on vaikuttanut huomattavasti kokemusmaailmaamme. Audiovisuaalinen media ja etenkin elokuva on vaikuttanut myös kaunokirjallisuuteen. Mutta miten tarkalleen ottaen "liikkuvat kuvat'' ovat muuttaneet sanataidetta? Entä mitä muutokset ovat edellyttäneet lukijalta? Toisin sanoen: millaista on elokuvan ja romaanin välinen vuoropuhelu aikana jolloin audiovisuaalinen kerronta ulottuu lähes kaikkiin inhimillisen toiminnan osa-alueisiin? Näihin kysymyksiin pureudutaan tässä tutkimuksessa. Tarkastelen väitöskirjassani neljää 2000-luvulla julkaistua romaania, jotka eri tavoin heijastelevat elokuvan ja sanataiteen suhdetta kaunokirjallisuuden näkökulmasta. Teokset ovat Paul Austerin The Book of Illusions (2002, suom. Illuusioiden kirja), David Nichollsin The Understudy (2005, suom. Varamies), Don DeLillon Point Omega (2010, suom. Omegapiste) ja Katri Lipsonin Jäätelökauppias (2012). Nämä eri genrejä edustavat romaanit esittävät kattavasti erilaisia tapoja hyödyntää elokuvaa osana kaunokirjallista kerrontaa. Elokuvat ovat eri tavoin läsnä tarkasteltavissa teoksissa: elokuvia katsotaan ja niistä kerrotaan; elokuvien kautta viestitään epäsuorasti ja henkilöhahmot peilaavat omaa itseä niitä vasten. Romaaneissa esitetyt elokuvat tarjoavat samastumispinnan niin kertojille, henkilöhahmoille kuin lukijoille. Kaikissa tutkimissani romaaneissa elokuvalla on hyvin tärkeä rooli sekä tarinamaailman rakentumisessa että juonenkulussa. Tällä on suuri vaikutus lukukokemukseen, sillä lukijan on luettava teosta elokuvien kautta. Näin ollen myös lukijan aiemmat kokemukset ja tietämys elokuvista vaikuttavat huomattavasti lukuprosessiin. Teosanalyysini osoittavat, että kaikissa teoksissa horjutetaan romaanin esittämän todellisuuden ja elokuvatodellisuuden välistä rajaa. Tämä horjuttaminen voi tapahtua leikkisästi, kuten Nichollsin The Understudyssa, jossa päähenkilö yrittää epäonnisesti hyödyntää näkemiään elokuvia arkielämässä. Sitä vastoin DeLillon pienoisromaanissa Point Omega romaanin todellisuus ja elokuvatodellisuus törmäytetään ahdistavalla tavalla, kun teoksessa esitetty videoinstallaatio alkaa hallita tarinamaailman rakentumista ja uhkaa nielaista koko fiktiivisen todellisuuden itseensä. Elokuvan avulla romaanit koettelevat ja kyseenalaistavat arkiajattelullemme ominaisia tapoja jaotella maailmaa puhtaan hierarkkisesti. Romaanit kannustavat pohtimaan käsityksiämme totuuden, elämän ja tietämisen rajoista
