    Genetic Algorithm for Fuzzy Neural Networks using Locally Crossover

    Fuzzy feed-forward (FFNR) and fuzzy recurrent networks (FRNN) proved to be solutions for "real world problems". In the most cases, the learning algorithms are based on gradient techniques adapted for fuzzy logic with heuristic rules in the case of fuzzy numbers. In this paper we propose a learning mechanism based on genetic algorithms (GA) with locally crossover that can be applied to various topologies of fuzzy neural networks with fuzzy numbers. The mechanism is applied to FFNR and FRNN with L-R fuzzy numbers as inputs, outputs and weights and fuzzy arithmetic as forward signal propagation. The α-cuts and fuzzy biases are also taken into account. The effectiveness of the proposed method is proven in two applications: the mapping a vector of triangular fuzzy numbers into another vector of triangular fuzzy numbers for FFNR and the dynamic capture of fuzzy sinusoidal oscillations for FRNN

    GA-based neural fuzzy control of flexible-link manipulators

    The limitations of conventional model-based control mechanisms for flexible manipulator systems have stimulated the development of intelligent control mechanisms incorporating fuzzy logic and neural networks. Problems have been encountered in applying the traditional PD-, PI-, and PID-type fuzzy controllers to flexible-link manipulators. A PD-PI-type fuzzy controller has been developed where the membership functions are adjusted by tuning the scaling factors using a neural network. Such a network needs a sufficient number of neurons in the hidden layer to approximate the nonlinearity of the system. A simple realisable network is desirable and hence a single neuron network with a nonlinear activation function is used. It has been demonstrated that the sigmoidal function and its shape can represent the nonlinearity of the system. A genetic algorithm is used to learn the weights, biases and shape of the sigmoidal function of the neural network

    A Neural Network Realization of Fuzzy ART

    A neural network realization of the fuzzy Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) algorithm is described. Fuzzy ART is capable of rapid stable learning of recognition categories in response to arbitrary sequences of analog or binary input patterns. Fuzzy ART incorporates computations from fuzzy set theory into the ART 1 neural network, which learns to categorize only binary input patterns, thus enabling the network to learn both analog and binary input patterns. In the neural network realization of fuzzy ART, signal transduction obeys a path capacity rule. Category choice is determined by a combination of bottom-up signals and learned category biases.     Image Segmentation and Classification of Marine Organisms

    To automate the arduous task of identifying and classifying images through their domain expertise, pioneers in the field of machine learning and computer vision invented many algorithms and pre-processing techniques. The process of classification is flexible with many user and domain specific alterations. These techniques are now being used to classify marine organisms to study and monitor their populations. Despite advancements in the field of programming languages and machine learning, image segmentation and classification for unlabeled data still needs improvement.     Optimization the initial weights of artificial neural networks via genetic algorithm applied to hip bone fracture prediction

    This paper aims to find the optimal set of initial weights to enhance the accuracy of artificial neural networks (ANNs) by using genetic algorithms (GA). The sample in this study included 228 patients with first low-trauma hip fracture and 215 patients without hip fracture, both of them were interviewed with 78 questions. We used logistic regression to select 5 important factors (i.e., bone mineral density, experience of fracture, average hand grip strength, intake of coffee, and peak expiratory flow rate) for building artificial neural networks to predict the probabilities of hip fractures. Three-layer (one hidden layer) ANNs models with back-propagation training algorithms were adopted. The purpose in this paper is to find the optimal initial weights of neural networks via genetic algorithm to improve the predictability. Area under the ROC curve (AUC) was used to assess the performance of neural networks. The study results showed the genetic algorithm obtained an AUC of 0.858±0.00493 on modeling data and 0.802 ± 0.03318 on testing data. They were slightly better than the results of our previous study (0.868±0.00387 and 0.796±0.02559, resp.). Thus, the preliminary study for only using simple GA has been proved to be effective for improving the accuracy of artificial neural networks.This research was supported by the National Science Council (NSC) of Taiwan (Grant no.     Large-Scale Neural Systems for Vision and Cognition

    — Consideration of how people respond to the question What is this? has suggested new problem frontiers for pattern recognition and information fusion, as well as neural systems that embody the cognitive transformation of declarative information into relational knowledge. In contrast to traditional classification methods, which aim to find the single correct label for each exemplar (This is a car), the new approach discovers rules that embody coherent relationships among labels which would otherwise appear contradictory to a learning system (This is a car, that is a vehicle, over there is a sedan). This talk will describe how an individual who experiences exemplars in real time, with each exemplar trained on at most one category label, can autonomously discover a hierarchy of cognitive rules, thereby converting local information into global knowledge. Computational examples are based on the observation that sensors working at different times, locations, and spatial scales, and experts with different goals, languages, and situations, may produce apparently inconsistent image labels, which are reconciled by implicit underlying relationships that the network’s learning process discovers. The ARTMAP information fusion system can, moreover, integrate multiple separate knowledge hierarchies, by fusing independent domains into a unified structure. In the process, the system discovers cross-domain rules, inferring multilevel relationships among groups of output classes, without any supervised labeling of these relationships. In order to self-organize its expert system, the ARTMAP information fusion network features distributed code representations which exploit the model’s intrinsic capacity for one-to-many learning (This is a car and a vehicle and a sedan) as well as many-to-one learning (Each of those vehicles is a car).
