    A Multicriteria Approach for the Evaluation of the Sustainability of Re-use of Historic Buildings in Venice

    The paper presents a multiple criteria model for the evaluation of the sustainability of projects for the economic re-use of historical buildings in Venice. The model utilises the relevant parameters for the appraisal of sustainability, aggregated into three macro-indicators: intrinsic sustainability, context sustainability and economic-financial feasibility. The model has been calibrated by a panel of experts and tested on two reuse hypotheses of the Old Arsenal in Venice. The tests have proven the model to be a useful support in the early stages of evaluation of re-use projects, where economic improvements are to be combined with conservation, as it supports the identification of critical points and the selection of projects, thus providing not only a check-list of variables to be considered, but an appraisal of trade-offs between economic uses and requirements of conservation.Economic Reuse, Historical Building Conservation

    Deriving consensus rankings via multicriteria decision making methodology

    Purpose - This paper seeks to take a cautionary stance to the impact of the marketing mix on customer satisfaction, via a case study deriving consensus rankings for benchmarking on selected retail stores in Malaysia. Design/methodology/approach - The ELECTRE I model is used in deriving consensus rankings via multicriteria decision making method for benchmarking base on the marketing mix model 4P's. Descriptive analysis is used to analyze best practice among the four marketing tactics. Findings - Outranking methods in consequence constitute a strong base on which to found the entire structure of the behavioral theory of benchmarking applied to development of marketing strategy. Research limitations/implications - This study looks only at a limited part of the puzzle of how consumer satisfaction translates into behavioral outcomes. Practical implications - The study provides managers with guidance on how to generate a rough outline of potential marketing activities that can be used to take advantage of capabilities and convert weaknesses and threats. Originality/value - The paper interestingly portrays the effective usage of multicriteria decision-making and ranking method to help marketing managers predict their marketing trends

    Fuzzy Logic and Its Uses in Finance: A Systematic Review Exploring Its Potential to Deal with Banking Crises

    The major success of fuzzy logic in the field of remote control opened the door to its application in many other fields, including finance. However, there has not been an updated and comprehensive literature review on the uses of fuzzy logic in the financial field. For that reason, this study attempts to critically examine fuzzy logic as an effective, useful method to be applied to financial research and, particularly, to the management of banking crises. The data sources were Web of Science and Scopus, followed by an assessment of the records according to pre-established criteria and an arrangement of the information in two main axes: financial markets and corporate finance. A major finding of this analysis is that fuzzy logic has not yet been used to address banking crises or as an alternative to ensure the resolvability of banks while minimizing the impact on the real economy. Therefore, we consider this article relevant for supervisory and regulatory bodies, as well as for banks and academic researchers, since it opens the door to several new research axes on banking crisis analyses using artificial intelligence techniques

    NPS NRP Technical ReportThis proposed research has the goal of proposing novel, reusable, extensible, adaptable, and comprehensive advanced analytical process and Integrated Risk Management to help the (DOD) with risk-based capital budgeting, Monte Carlo risk-simulation, predictive analytics, and stochastic optimization of acquisitions and programs portfolios with multiple competing stakeholders while subject to budgetary, risk, schedule, and strategic constraints. The research covers topics of traditional capital budgeting methodologies used in industry, including the market, cost, and income approaches, and explains how some of these traditional methods can be applied in the DOD by using DOD-centric non-economic, logistic, readiness, capabilities, and requirements variables. Stochastic portfolio optimization with dynamic simulations and investment efficient frontiers will be run for the purposes of selecting the best combination of programs and capabilities is also addressed, as are other alternative methods such as average ranking, risk metrics, lexicographic methods, PROMETHEE, ELECTRE, and others. The results include actionable intelligence developed from an analytically robust case study that senior leadership at the DOD may utilize to make optimal decisions. The main deliverables will be a detailed written research report and presentation brief on the approach of capturing risk and uncertainty in capital budgeting analysis.     Fuzzy Systems in Business Valuation

    This research aims to develop a model that is able to integrate and objectify information provided by the different business valuation methods, incorporating quality management in its formal approach, which to date has not been considered in the literature about business valuation or quality management. Firstly, the company is valued using the methods which best adapt to its specific characteristics. Because of the subjectivity inherent in any valuation process, the results will be expressed through Triangular Fuzzy Numbers (TFN). These Fuzzy Numbers will be aggregated and summarized by applying Basic Defuzzification Distribution Uncertain Probabilistic Ordered Weighted Averaging operator (BADD-UPOWA). The weighting factors will be: the degree of confidence in each of the business valuation methods applied, and the innovative use of the company’s position on Crosby’s Quality Administration Grid. The results from application of the model in a case study show a significant reduction in uncertainty in contrast to the initial valuations. Moreover, the proposed methodology is seen to increase the final value of the company as its advances in quality management

    A multicriteria evaluation system for large real estate investments

    As an economic engine of contemporary societies, the real estate market needs to be carefully analyzed in terms of both urban management and private or public investment. Information on this market’s behavior can facilitate the identification of turning points in societies’ economic history. Analysts should focus not only on conditioning variables and other important determinants of relevance to investment evaluations but also on the impacts of each variable or factor. Measuring these effects is a key activity in decision-making processes. Given real estate’s growing importance to sustainable economic growth, this study concentrates on creating a multicriteria model for evaluating large real estate investments. A constructivist, process-oriented approach was applied in group work sessions held with a panel of experts with experience in dealing with this issue. These specialists structured the problem of evaluating large real estate investments using value-focused thinking (VFT) and cognitive mapping. The best-worst method (BWM) was then applied to calculate trade-offs among decision criteria and calibrate the evaluation system. The results were presented to and validated by a representative of Instituto da Habitação e da Reabilitação Urbana (Institute for Housing and Urban Rehabilitation), who identified the advantages and limitations of the proposed model, and suggested possible improvements.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Proposing a new methodology for prioritising the investment strategies in the private sector of Iran

    This article proposes a systematic and organised approach for group decision-making in the presence of the uncertainty involved in expert judgments as used in multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) issues. This procedure comprises the selection of the optimum alternative with respect to the evaluation criteria under consideration, in particular to select the strategy of investing. However, the selection of the investment strategy is difficult on account of considering the numerous quantitative and qualitative parameters like benefits, opportunities, costs, and risks. However, it is possible that these parameters have a significant influence on each other. A decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL), used to define the influential network of elements, can be employed to construct a network relationship map (NRM). On the other hand, according to whether the information is incomplete or unavailable, uncertainty is an inseparable part of making decision for solving the MCDM problems. Therefore, this article proposes a new hybrid model based on analytic hierarchical process (AHP), DEMATEL, and echnique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) techniques under fuzzy environment to evaluate the problem of the selection of the investment strategy. To achieve the aim, a three-step process is presented to solve a sophisticated problem. First, the AHP method is employed to break down the investment problem into simple structure and calculate the importance weights of criteria by using a pairwise comparison process. Second, the DEMATEL technique is applied for considering interdependence and dependencies and computing the global weights of benefit, opportunities, cost, and risk (BOCR) factors. Finally, the fuzzy TOPSIS methodology is used for prioritising the possible alternatives. To demonstrate the potential application of the proposed model, a numerical example is illustrated and investigated.     A project portfolio selection method has been suggested, which is focused to systemic accounting for factors affecting the efficiency of a set of projects. In solving the task, the focus was on studying the impact of the human factor and the subjective component. The key point of the method is acquisition and assessment of information on the market, the organisation's strategy, the projects, the organisation's potential to implement the projects, and the influence of stakeholders. The set of projects selected for the portfolio is validated for admissibility in regard to the profit gained, income, financial feasibility, and the company's resource load. A model for optimising the project portfolio with algorithmic constraints has been suggested. The method can be applied for large and medium businesses
