Genuine lab experiences for students in resource constrained environments: The RealLab with integrated intelligent assessment.
Laboratory activities are indispensable for developing engineering skills. Computer Aided Learning (CAL) tools can be used to enhance laboratory learning in various ways, the latest approach being the virtual laboratory technique that emulates traditional laboratory processes. This new approach makes it possible to give students complete and genuine laboratory experiences in situations constrained by limited resources in the provision of laboratory facilities and infrastructure and/or where there is need for laboratory education, for large classes, with only one laboratory stand. This may especially be the case in countries in transition. Most existing virtual laboratories are not available for purchase. Where they are, they may not be cost friendly for resource constrained environments. Also, most do not integrate any form of assessment structure. In this paper, we present a very cost friendly virtual laboratory solution for genuine laboratory experiences in resource constrained environments, with integrated intelligent assessment
Multicriteria decision making for enhanced perception-based multimedia communication
This paper proposes an approach that integrates technical concerns with user perceptual considerations for intelligent decision making in the construction of tailor-made multimedia communication protocols. Thus, the proposed approach, based on multicriteria decision making (MDM), incorporates not only classical networking considerations, but, indeed, user preferences as well. Furthermore, in keeping with the task-dependent nature consistently identified in multimedia scenarios, the suggested communication protocols also take into account the type of multimedia application that they are transporting. Lastly, this approach also opens the possibility for such protocols to dynamically adapt based on a changing operating environment and user's preferences

Skill-based reconfiguration of industrial mobile robots
Caused by a rising mass customisation and the high variety of equipment versions, the
exibility of manufacturing systems in car productions has to be increased. In addition to
a
exible handling of production load changes or hardware breakdowns that are established
research areas in literature, this thesis presents a skill-based recon guration mechanism
for industrial mobile robots to enhance functional recon gurability.
The proposed holonic multi-agent system is able to react to functional process changes
while missing functionalities are created by self-organisation. Applied to a mobile commissioning
system that is provided by AUDI AG, the suggested mechanism is validated
in a real-world environment including the on-line veri cation of the recon gured robot
functionality in a Validity Check.
The present thesis includes an original contribution in three aspects: First, a recon -
guration mechanism is presented that reacts in a self-organised way to functional process
changes. The application layer of a hardware system converts a semantic description into
functional requirements for a new robot skill. The result of this mechanism is the on-line
integration of a new functionality into the running process.
Second, the proposed system allows maintaining the productivity of the running process
and
exibly changing the robot hardware through provision of a hardware-abstraction
layer. An encapsulated Recon guration Holon dynamically includes the actual con guration
each time a recon guration is started. This allows reacting to changed environment
settings. As the resulting agent that contains the new functionality, is identical in shape
and behaviour to the existing skills, its integration into the running process is conducted
without a considerable loss of productivity.
Third, the suggested mechanism is composed of a novel agent design that allows implementing
self-organisation during the encapsulated recon guration and dependability
for standard process executions. The selective assignment of behaviour-based and cognitive
agents is the basis for the
exibility and e ectiveness of the proposed recon guration
mechanism
Assessment of Sustainable Development Goals through Industry 4.0 and reconfigurable manufacturing system practices
Purpose: The United Nationâs Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), introduced in 2015, connect several manufacturing strategies and promote sustainable practices in an organization. Manufacturing companies are struggling to meet changing market demands while also addressing social and biological issues. The current study aims to develop a framework that can assist practitioners and managers contribute to the attainment of the SDGs through the adoption of reconfigurable manufacturing system (RMS) practices and Industry 4.0 technologies.
Design/Methodology/Approach: An extensive literature review was carried out to identify RMS-Industry 4.0 practices and their interconnection, as well as their contribution to achieving the SDGs. The Stepwise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis (SWARA) method was then used to compute the weights of the selected RMS-Industry 4.0 practices, whereas the Weighted Aggregated Sum Product Assessment (WASPAS) method was used to prioritize performance metrics. The developed framework's robustness was tested using a sensitivity analysis across five different organizations.
Results/Findings: The findings show that advanced technologies practices have the most importance, followed by customization and rapid adjustment of capacity and functionality practices. The sensitivity analysis revealed the robustness of the developed framework as well as its adaptability among the chosen organizations.
Practical Implications: This research will assist in the adoption of RMS and includes recent technologies that can help in the attainment of industrial SDGs. Managers will also be able to evaluate RMS in the context of industrial SDGs. Researchers and practitioners can now address the various RMS-Industry 4.0 practices while keeping the social and environmental aspects in mind.
Originality Value: No previous research has investigated the SDGs through the nexus effect of Industry 4.0 and RMS practices
