There is considerable increase in residential solar grid connected installations with many advantages offered by solar energy. As more solar panels are connected to grid, the Solar Inverter between solar panels and grid have to perform at optimum levels. Modern Inverters consist of DC-DC Converter and DC-AC Inverter. One problem associated with Inverter design is voltage fluctuation, this defect lies in the DC-DC converter Maximum power tracking (MPPT) algorithms responsible for extracting maximum power from the solar panels. The defect is due to large sampling number required for conventional MPPT algorithm. This thesis has proposed a new MPPT algorithm based on Mamdani Fuzzy logic. In research we use 5 parameter one diode model for solar cell modelling. The P-V/I-V characteristics curve is generated. The P-V characteristics curves sectioned and input membership and output membership functions is created. And unique fuzzy rules is used to optimize fuzzy controller output. Mamdani Fuzzy logic algorithm is compared to traditional PI controller hill climbing method. When small sampling number is used hill climbing method response is slow and good at tracking. When big sampling number is used hill climbing method response is fast and not good at tracking. The voltage also fluctuates when sampling number is big. Fuzzy logic provides a compromised solution with best response time and moderate tracking accuracy compared to hill climbing method. Fuzzy Logic based DC-DC converter together with PLL and Recursive Discrete Fourier Transform (RDFT) DC-AC inverter synchronization algorithm is employed and simulated in matlab. The MPPT simulation is conducted for a realistic 2.5KW solar panels in a 8 x 2 Matrix. In addition the MPPT algorithm is analyzed to see if it performs under power quality and voltage level tolerance of utility grid requirements. The Fuzzy Logic MPPT is excellent at tracking power. When temperature is fixed and irradiance is varied, the maximum tracking error is 5.2% in all scenarios with one exception. When irradiance is fixed and temperature varied, the maximum tracking error is 1.98%. Furthermore the Fuzzy Logic MPPT meets the power quality and voltage level tolerance requirements of utility grid for irradiance over 600 W/m2. Power quality and voltage level tolerance requirements for irradiance under 600 W/m2 is not critical as this is outside twilight conditions. Out of all the Synchronization algorithm identified in this Thesis, RDFT achieves synchronization very quickly and in addition it suppresses harmonics and noise. The possibility of future study to extend MPPT is also briefly discussed. The extension of future study is using Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy logic. Takagi-Sugeno uses more sophisticated inference and rule evaluation mathematics

This dissertation presents several model predictive control (MPC) techniques and finite-position-set observers (FPSOs) for permanent-magnet synchronous generators and doubly-fed induction generators in variable-speed wind turbines. The proposed FPSOs are novel ones and based on the concept of finite-control-set MPC. Then, the problems of the MPC techniques like sensitivity to variations of the model parameters and others are investigated and solved in this work.

Linear Kalman Filter-Based Grid Synchronization Technique: An Alternative Implementation

Grid synchronization techniques play a significant role in integrating renewable energy sources to the electric power grid. In this context, estimating the phase and frequency of the grid voltage signal is an interesting problem. Out of various techniques available in the literature, Linear Kalman Filter (LKF) is one of the most popular one. In this paper, we propose an alternative implementation of the LKF for grid synchronization application. The proposed implementation uses a linear parametric model of the grid voltage signal including DC offset. It does not involve any quadrature signal generation, rather it works by estimating the phase angle. This helps to estimate the unknown grid frequency directly from the phase angle. This clearly differentiates the proposed alternative implementation with respect to the existing implementations. Performance improvement by the proposed technique is verified extensively through comparative numerical simulation and experimental studies. Comparative results demonstrate the suitability of the proposed technique with respect to other state-of-the-art techniques namely SecondOrder Generalized Integrator Phase-Locked Loop (SOGI-PLL) and Enhanced Phase-Locked Loop (EPLL)

This study presents a novel adaptive control scheme for variable-speed wind turbine (VSWT) driven permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) to ensure its operation under different operating conditions. The adaptive control scheme is based on the affine projection algorithm (APA) which provides a faster convergence and less computational complexity than the least-mean-square algorithm. The proposed adaptive controller is used to control both the generator-side converter and the grid-side inverter without giving additional tuning efforts. Each vector control scheme for the converter/inverter has four APA-based adaptive proportional-integral (PI) controllers. Detailed modelling and the control strategies of the system under study are demonstrated. Real wind speed data extracted from Hokkaido island, Japan is used in this study. The dynamic characteristics of a grid-connected VSWT-PMSG are investigated in details to ensure the proposed controller operation under different operating conditions. The effectiveness of the proposed adaptive controller is compared with that obtained using optimised PI controllers by Taguchi method. The validity of the adaptive vector control scheme is verified by the simulation results which are performed using PSCAD/EMTDC environment

Electrical power quality (EPQ) in distribution systems is a critical issue for commercial, industrial and residential applications. The new concept of advanced power electronic based Custom Power Devices (CPDs) mainly distributed static synchronous compensator (D-STATCOM), dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) and unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) have been developed due to lacking the performance of traditional compensating devices to minimize power quality disturbances. This paper presents a comprehensive review on D-STATCOM, DVR and UPQC to solve the electrical power quality problems of the distribution networks. This is intended to present a broad overview of the various possible DSTATCOM, DVR and UPQC configurations for single-phase (two wire) and three-phase (three-wire and four-wire) networks and control strategies for the compensation of various power quality disturbances. Apart from this, comprehensive explanation, comparison, and discussion on D-STATCOM, DVR, and UPQC are presented. This paper is aimed to explore a broad prospective on the status of D-STATCOMs, DVRs, and UPQCs to researchers, engineers and the community dealing with the power quality enhancement.
