    Energy efficiency is one of the main drivers for achieving sustainable manufacturing. Advances in machine tool design have reduced the energy consumption of such equipment, but still machine tools remain one of the most energy demanding equipment in a workshop. This study presents a novel approach aimed to improve the energy efficiency of machine tools through the online optimization of cutting conditions.     Implementation of Real-Time Machining Process Control Based on Fuzzy Logic in a New STEP-NC Compatible System

    Implementing real-time machining process control at shop floor has great significance on raising the efficiency and quality of product manufacturing. A framework and implementation methods of real-time machining process control based on STEP-NC are presented in this paper. Data model compatible with ISO 14649 standard is built to transfer high-level real-time machining process control information between CAPP systems and CNC systems, in which EXPRESS language is used to define new STEP-NC entities. Methods for implementing real-time machining process control at shop floor are studied and realized on an open STEP-NC controller, which is developed using object-oriented, multithread, and shared memory technologies conjunctively. Cutting force at specific direction of machining feature in side mill is chosen to be controlled object, and a fuzzy control algorithm with self-adjusting factor is designed and embedded in the software CNC kernel of STEP-NC controller. Experiments are carried out to verify the proposed framework, STEP-NC data model, and implementation methods for real-time machining process control. The results of experiments prove that real-time machining process control tasks can be interpreted and executed correctly by the STEP-NC controller at shop floor, in which actual cutting force is kept around ideal value, whether axial cutting depth changes suddenly or continuously

    Chatter mitigation in milling process using discrete time sliding mode control with type 2-fuzzy logic system

    In order to achieve a high-quality machining process with superior productivity, it is very important to tackle the phenomenon of chatter in an effective manner. The problems like tool wear and improper surface finish affect the milling process and are caused by self-induced vibration termed as chatter. A strategy to control chatter vibration actively in the milling process is presented. The mathematical modeling of the process is carried out initially. In this paper, an innovative technique of discrete time sliding mode control (DSMC) is blended with the type-2 fuzzy logic system. The proposed active controller results in a significantly high mitigation of vibration. The DSMC is linked to the time-varying gain which is an innovative approach to mitigate chattering. The theorem is laid down which validates that the system states are bounded in the case of DSMC-type-2 fuzzy. Stability analysis is carried out using Lyapunov candidate. The nonlinearities linked with the cutting forces and damper friction are handled effectively by using the type-2 fuzzy logic system. The performance of the DSMC-type-2 fuzzy concept is compared with the discrete time PID (D-PID) and discrete time sliding mode control for validating the effectiveness of the controller. The better performance of DSMC-type-2 fuzzy over D-PID and DSMC-T1 fuzzy in the minimization of milling chatter are validated by a numerical analysis approach

    Monitoring of Tool Wear and Surface Roughness Using ANFIS Method During CNC Turning of CFRP Composite

    Carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) is gaining wide acceptance in areas including sports, aerospace and automobile industry . Because of its superior mechanical qualities and lower weight than metals, it needs effective and efficient machining methods. In this study, the relationship between the cutting parameters (Speed, Feed, Depth of Cut) and response parameters (Vibration, Surface Finish, Cutting Force and Tool Wear) are investigated for CFRP composite. For machining of CFRP, CNC turning operation with coated carbide tool is used. An ANFIS model with two MISO system has been developed to predict the tool wear and surface finish. Speed, feed, depth of cut, vibration and cutting force have been used as input parameters and tool wear and surface finish have been used as output parameter. Three sets of cutting parameter have been used to gather the data points for continuous turning of CFRP composite. The model merged fuzzy inference modeling with artificial neural network learning abilities, and a set of rules is constructed directly from experimental data. However, Design of Experiments (DOE) confirmation of this experiment fails because of multi-collinearity problem in the dataset and insufficient experimental data points to predict the tool wear and surface roughness effectively using ANFIS methodology. Therefore, the result of this experiment do not provide a proper representation, and result in a failure to conform to a correct DOE approach

    Estimation of surface roughness on Ti-6Al-4V in high speed micro end milling by ANFIS model

    379-389Titanium and its alloys are a few of the most suitable materials in medical applications due to their biocompatibility, anticorrosion and desirable mechanical properties compared to other materials like commercially pure Nb & Ta, Cr-Co alloys and stainless steels. High speed micro end milling is one of the favorable methods for accomplishing micro features on hard metals/alloys with better quality products delivering efficiently in shorter lead and production times. In this paper, experimental investigation of machining parameters influence on surface roughness in high speed micro end milling of Ti-6Al-4V using uncoated tungsten carbide tools under dry cutting conditions and prediction of surface roughness using adaptive neuro- fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) methodology has been presented. Using MATLAB tool box - ANFIS approach four membership functions - triangular, trapezoidal, gbell, gauss has been chosen during the training process in order to evaluate the prediction accuracy of surface roughness. The model’s predictions have been compared with experimental data for verifying the approach. From the comparison of four membership functions, the prediction accuracy of ANFIS has been reached 99.96% using general bell membership function.     The main interest of this thesis consists of the study and implementation of postprocessors to adapt the toolpath generated by a Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) system to a complex robotic workcell of eight joints, devoted to the rapid prototyping of 3D CAD-defined products. It consists of a 6R industrial manipulator mounted on a linear track and synchronized with a rotary table. To accomplish this main objective, previous work is required. Each task carried out entails a methodology, objective and partial results that complement each other, namely: - It is described the architecture of the workcell in depth, at both displacement and joint-rate levels, for both direct and inverse resolutions. The conditioning of the Jacobian matrix is described as kinetostatic performance index to evaluate the vicinity to singular postures. These ones are analysed from a geometric point of view. - Prior to any machining, the additional external joints require a calibration done in situ, usually in an industrial environment. A novel Non-contact Planar Constraint Calibration method is developed to estimate the external joints configuration parameters by means of a laser displacement sensor. - A first control is originally done by means of a fuzzy inference engine at the displacement level, which is integrated within the postprocessor of the CAM software. - Several Redundancy Resolution Schemes (RRS) at the joint-rate level are compared for the configuration of the postprocessor, dealing not only with the additional joints (intrinsic redundancy) but also with the redundancy due to the symmetry on the milling tool (functional redundancy). - The use of these schemes is optimized by adjusting two performance criterion vectors related to both singularity avoidance and maintenance of a preferred reference posture, as secondary tasks to be done during the path tracking.
