    An adaptive fuzzy logic controller for intelligent networking and control

    In this thesis, we present a fuzzy logic control scheme to regulate the flow of traffic approaching a set of intersections. An adaptive Fuzzy Logic Traffic Controller (FLTC) is used to adjust the green phase split of the north-south and east-west approaches of a set of traffic signals based on the actual traffic approaching the intersection. Each intersection is coordinated with its neighbouring intersections by adjusting the offset of the local intersection. The offset is adjusted by a local fuzzy logic controller loacted at each intersection. A new fuzzy control scheme, using a supervisory Fuzzy Logic Controller, is also proposed for adjusting the offset. The fuzzy knowledge base of the supervisory Fuzzy Logic Controller is automatically generated by Genetic Algorithms (GAs). The fuzzy rules generated by the integrated Fuzzy Logic and Genetic Algorithm architecture is found to be effective in optimising the traffic flow. The effectiveness of the above fuzzy control scheme is established through simulations of the traffic flow approaching an isolated intersection, two adjacent intersections, and a set of three intersections. The superiority of adjusting offset using a supervisory fuzzy logic controller is established through simulations

    Non linear control of glycaemia in type 1 diabetic patients

    A fuzzy controller for the closed loop control, by insulin infusion of glycaemia in type 1 diabetic patients is proposed. The controller uses type-2 fuzzy sets. The controller was tested in simulation using a complex nonlinear model of the glucose metabolism. Simulation results confirm the effectiveness and the robustness of the type-2 fuzzy logic controller. The design of the controller uses an optimization method based on genetic algorithms. This makes the type-2 fuzzy controller more efficient and faster than a fuzzy controller with type-1 fuzzy sets, allowing a more accurate control of the glucose in the blood

    Comparative performance of intelligent algorithms for system identification and control

    This paper presents an investigation into the comparative performance of intelligent system identification and control algorithms within the framework of an active vibration control (AVC) system. Evolutionary Genetic algorithms (GAs) and Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference system (ANFIS) algorithms are used to develop mechanisms of an AVC system, where the controller is designed based on optimal vibration suppression using the plant model. A simulation platform of a flexible beam system in transverse vibration using finite difference (FD) method is considered to demonstrate the capabilities of the AVC system using GAs and ANFIS. MATLAB GA tool box for GAs and Fuzzy Logic tool box for ANFIS function are used to design the AVC system. The system is men implemented, tested and its performance assessed for GAs and ANFIS based algorithms. Finally, a comparative performance of the algorithms in implementing system identification and corresponding AVC system using GAs and ANFIS is presented and discussed through a set of experiments

    The main objective of the present work is to develop a framework for modelling and controlling of a real world multi-input and multi-output (MIMO) continuously drifting metallurgical process, which is shown to be a complex system. A small change in the properties of the charge composition may lead to entirely different outcome of the process. The newly emerging paradigm of soft-computing or Hybrid Computational Intelligence Systems approach which is based on neural networks, fuzzy sets, genetic algorithms and chaos theory has been applied to tackle this problem In this framework first a feed-forward neuro-model has been developed based on the data collected from a working Submerged Arc Furnace (SAF). Then the process is analysed for the existence of the chaos with the chaos theory (calculating indices like embedding dimension, Lyapunov exponent etc). After that an effort is made to evolve a fuzzy logic controller for the dynamical process using combination of genetic algorithms and the neural networks based forward model to predict the system’s behaviour or conditions in advance and to further suggest modifications to be made to achieve the desired results

    On-line multiobjective automatic control system generation by evolutionary algorithms

    Evolutionary algorithms are applied to the on- line generation of servo-motor control systems. In this paper, the evolving population of controllers is evaluated at run-time via hardware in the loop, rather than on a simulated model. Disturbances are also introduced at run-time in order to pro- duce robust performance. Multiobjective optimisation of both PI and Fuzzy Logic controllers is considered. Finally an on-line implementation of Genetic Programming is presented based around the Simulink standard blockset. The on-line designed controllers are shown to be robust to both system noise and ex- ternal disturbances while still demonstrating excellent steady- state and dvnamic characteristics

Diesel engines are known reusing of the exhaust gas in order to reduce the exhaust emissions such as NOx that contribute high factors in the pollution. In this paper, we have conducted a study that EGR instalment in the vehicle can be good as it helps to prevent highly amount of toxic gas formation, which NOx level can be lowered. But applying the EGR it can lead to more cooling and more space which will affect in terms of the costing. Throughout the research, fuelling in the engine affects the EGR producing less emission. Other than that, it contributes to the less of performance efficiency when vehicle load is less

    A Review on Energy Consumption Optimization Techniques in IoT Based Smart Building Environments

    In recent years, due to the unnecessary wastage of electrical energy in residential buildings, the requirement of energy optimization and user comfort has gained vital importance. In the literature, various techniques have been proposed addressing the energy optimization problem. The goal of each technique was to maintain a balance between user comfort and energy requirements such that the user can achieve the desired comfort level with the minimum amount of energy consumption. Researchers have addressed the issue with the help of different optimization algorithms and variations in the parameters to reduce energy consumption. To the best of our knowledge, this problem is not solved yet due to its challenging nature. The gap in the literature is due to the advancements in the technology and drawbacks of the optimization algorithms and the introduction of different new optimization algorithms. Further, many newly proposed optimization algorithms which have produced better accuracy on the benchmark instances but have not been applied yet for the optimization of energy consumption in smart homes. In this paper, we have carried out a detailed literature review of the techniques used for the optimization of energy consumption and scheduling in smart homes. The detailed discussion has been carried out on different factors contributing towards thermal comfort, visual comfort, and air quality comfort. We have also reviewed the fog and edge computing techniques used in smart homes

    Assembly and Disassembly Planning by using Fuzzy Logic & Genetic Algorithms

    The authors propose the implementation of hybrid Fuzzy Logic-Genetic Algorithm (FL-GA) methodology to plan the automatic assembly and disassembly sequence of products. The GA-Fuzzy Logic approach is implemented onto two levels. The first level of hybridization consists of the development of a Fuzzy controller for the parameters of an assembly or disassembly planner based on GAs. This controller acts on mutation probability and crossover rate in order to adapt their values dynamically while the algorithm runs. The second level consists of the identification of theoptimal assembly or disassembly sequence by a Fuzzy function, in order to obtain a closer control of the technological knowledge of the assembly/disassembly process. Two case studies were analyzed in order to test the efficiency of the Fuzzy-GA methodologies
