Use of Fuzzy Logic for Design and Control of Nonlinear MIMO Systems

    Get PDF
Standard analytical methods are often ineffective or even useless for design of nonlinear control systems with imprecisely known parameters. The use of fuzzy logic principles presents one possible way to control such systems which can be used both for modeling and design of the control. The advantage of using this method consists in its simplicity and easy way of developing the algorithm, which in the phase of designing the controllers and also for modeling the features of the designed structures, allows the use of computer technology. Simplicity of the proposed structure (usually with the PI controllers) and determination of their parameters without any need for complex mathematical description present another considerable advantage of the used method. This chapter presents two typical examples of designing the control of nonlinear multi‐input multi‐output (MIMO) systems from the field of mechatronic systems based on fuzzy logic principles

Fusion of low-cost and light-weight sensor system for mobile flexible manipulator

    Get PDF
There is a need for non-industrial robots such as in homecare and eldercare. Light-weight mobile robots preferred as compared to conventional fixed based robots as the former is safe, portable, convenient and economical to implement. Sensor system for light-weight mobile flexible manipulator is studied in this research. A mobile flexible link manipulator (MFLM) contributes to high amount of vibrations at the tip, giving rise to inaccurate position estimations. In a control system, there inevitably exists a lag between the sensor feedback and the controller. Consequently, it contributed to instable control of the MFLM. Hence, there it is a need to predict the tip trajectory of the MFLM. Fusion of low cost sensors is studied to enhance prediction accuracy at the MFLM’s tip. A digital camera and an accelerometer are used predict tip of the MFLM. The main disadvantage of camera is the delayed feedback due to the slow data rate and long processing time, while accelerometer composes cumulative errors. Wheel encoder and webcam are used for position estimation of the mobile platform. The strengths and limitations of each sensor were compared. To solve the above problem, model based predictive sensor systems have been investigated for used on the mobile flexible link manipulator using the selected sensors. Mathematical models were being developed for modeling the reaction of the mobile platform and flexible manipulator when subjected to a series of input voltages and loads. The model-based Kalman filter fusion prediction algorithm was developed, which gave reasonability good predictions of the vibrations of the tip of flexible manipulator on the mobile platform. To facilitate evaluation of the novel predictive system, a mobile platform was fabricated, where the flexible manipulator and the sensors are mounted onto the platform. Straight path motions were performed for the experimental tests. The results showed that predictive algorithm with modelled input to the Extended Kalman filter have best prediction to the tip vibration of the MFLM

REAL-TIME SIGNAL PROCESSING FOR FLYING HEIGHT MEASUREMENT AND CONTROL IN HARD DRIVES SUBJECT TO SHOCK AND VIBRATION

    Get PDF
Merged with duplicate record 10026.1/829 on 10.04.2017 by CS (TIS)Three readback signal detection methods are investigated for real-time flying height or head disk spacing variation measurement under vibration conditions. This is carried out by theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, and experimental study. The first method (amplitude detection) provides a simple way to study the head disk spacing change. The second method ( PW50 parameter estimation) can be used effectively for real-time spacing variation measurement in normally operated hard disk drives, primarily in low frequency spacing variation conditions. The third method (thermal signal detection), on the other hand, is more effective and suitable for high frequency spacing variation measurement. By combining the PW50 estimation and thermal signal detection methods, a noval spacing variation detection method for the whole frequency range is constructed. This combined signal detection method not only has been used to study the head disk spacing variation itself, but also has the potential of being used for real time flying height control. Analytical models are developed for head disk assembly and head position servo control mechanisms to analyse the operation failure of hard disk drives under vibration conditions. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulation show their good agreement with experimental results. A novel active flying height control method is proposed to suppress the flying height or head-disk spacing variation in hard disk drives under vibration conditions. Simulation results show that this active flying height control can effectively suppress the head-disk spacing variation, therefore the performance and reliability of HDDs can be well improved when working in vibration conditions: The method has a good potential to be applied to future ruggedized hard disk drives

Intelligent control of a class of nonlinear systems

    Get PDF
The objective of this study is to improve and propose new fuzzy control algorithms for a class of nonlinear systems. In order to achieve the objectives, novel stability theorems as well as modeling techniques are also investigated. Fuzzy controllers in this work are designed based on the fuzzy basis function neural networks and the type-2 Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy models. For a class of single-input single-output nonlinear systems, a new stability condition is derived to facilitate the design process of proportional-integral Mamdani fuzzy controllers. The stability conditions require a new technique to calculate the dynamic gains of nonlinear systems represented by fuzzy basis function network models. The dynamic gain of a fuzzy basis function network can be approximated by finding the maximum of norm values of the locally linearized systems or by solving a non-smooth optimal control problem. Based on the new stability theorem, a multilevel fuzzy controller with self-tuning algorithm is proposed and simulated in a tower crane control system. For a class of multi-input multi-output nonlinear systems with measurable state variables, a new method for modeling unstructured uncertainties and robust control of unknown nonlinear dynamic systems is proposed by using a novel robust Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy controller. First, a new training algorithm for an interval type-2 fuzzy basis function network is presented. Next, a novel technique is derived to convert the interval type-2 fuzzy basis function network to an interval type-2 Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model. Based on the interval type-2 Takagi-Sugeno and type-2 fuzzy basis function network models, a robust controller is presented with an adjustable convergence rate. Simulation results on an electrohydraulic actuator show that the robust Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy controller can reduce steady-state error under different conditions while maintaining better responses than the other robust sliding mode controllers can. Next, the study presents an implementation of type-2 fuzzy basis function networks and robust Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy controllers to data-driven modeling and robust control of a laser keyhole welding process. In this work, the variation of the keyhole diameter during the welding process is approximated by a type-2 fuzzy-basis-function network, while the keyhole penetration depth is modelled by a type-1 fuzzy basis function network. During the laser welding process, a CMOS camera integrated with the welding system was used to provide a feedback signal of the keyhole diameter. An observer was implemented to estimate the penetration depth in real time based on the adaptive divided difference filter and the feedback signal from the camera. A robust Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy controller was designed based on the fuzzy basis function networks representing the welding process with uncertainties to adjust the laser power to ensure that the penetration depth of the keyhole is maintained at a desired value. Experimental results demonstrated that the fuzzy models provided an accurate estimation of both the welding geometry and its variations due to uncertainties, and the robust Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy controller successfully reduced the penetration depth variation and improved the quality of the welding process

The electrical demands in several countries around the world are increasing due to the huge energy requirements of prosperous economies and the human activities of modern life. In order to economically transfer electrical powers from the generation side to the demand side, these powers need to be transferred at high-voltage levels through suitable transmission systems and power substations. To this end, high-voltage transmission systems and power substations are in demand. Actually, they are at the heart of interconnected power systems, in which any faults might lead to unsuitable consequences, abnormal operation situations, security issues, and even power cuts and blackouts. In order to cope with the ever-increasing operation and control complexity and security in interconnected high-voltage power systems, new architectures, concepts, algorithms, and procedures are essential. This book aims to encourage researchers to address the technical issues and research gaps in high-voltage transmission systems and power substations in modern energy systems
