Fuzzy image segmentation using location and intensity information
The segmentation results of any clustering algorithm are very sensitive to the features used in the similarity measure and the object types, which reduce the generalization capability of the algorithm. The previously developed algorithm called image segmentation using fuzzy clustering incorporating spatial information (FCSI) merged the independently segmented results generated by fuzzy clustering-based on pixel intensity and pixel location. The main disadvantages of this algorithm are that a perceptually selected threshold does not consider any semantic information and also produces unpredictable segmentation results for objects (regions) covering the entire image. This paper directly addresses these issues by introducing a new algorithm called fuzzy image segmentation using location and intensity (FSLI) by modifying the original FCSI algorithm. It considers the topological feature namely, connectivity and the similarity based on pixel intensity and surface variation. Qualitative and quantitative results confirm the considerable improvements achieved using the FSLI algorithm compared with FCSI and the fuzzy c-means (FCM) algorithm for all three alternatives, namely clustering using only pixel intensity, pixel location and a combination of the two, for a range of sample of images
Taming Wild High Dimensional Text Data with a Fuzzy Lash
The bag of words (BOW) represents a corpus in a matrix whose elements are the
frequency of words. However, each row in the matrix is a very high-dimensional
sparse vector. Dimension reduction (DR) is a popular method to address sparsity
and high-dimensionality issues. Among different strategies to develop DR
method, Unsupervised Feature Transformation (UFT) is a popular strategy to map
all words on a new basis to represent BOW. The recent increase of text data and
its challenges imply that DR area still needs new perspectives. Although a wide
range of methods based on the UFT strategy has been developed, the fuzzy
approach has not been considered for DR based on this strategy. This research
investigates the application of fuzzy clustering as a DR method based on the
UFT strategy to collapse BOW matrix to provide a lower-dimensional
representation of documents instead of the words in a corpus. The quantitative
evaluation shows that fuzzy clustering produces superior performance and
features to Principal Components Analysis (PCA) and Singular Value
Decomposition (SVD), two popular DR methods based on the UFT strategy
Image mining: trends and developments
[Abstract]: Advances in image acquisition and storage technology have led to tremendous growth in very large and detailed image databases. These images, if analyzed, can reveal useful information to the human users. Image mining deals with the extraction of implicit knowledge, image data relationship, or other patterns not explicitly stored in the images. Image mining is more than just an extension of data mining to image domain. It is an interdisciplinary endeavor that draws upon expertise in computer vision, image processing, image retrieval, data mining, machine learning, database, and artificial intelligence. In this paper, we will examine the research issues in image mining, current developments in image mining, particularly, image mining frameworks, state-of-the-art techniques and systems.
