Implementing imperfect information in fuzzy databases
Information in real-world applications is often
vague, imprecise and uncertain. Ignoring the inherent imperfect
nature of real-world will undoubtedly introduce some deformation of human perception of real-world and may eliminate several
substantial information, which may be very useful in several
data-intensive applications. In database context, several fuzzy
database models have been proposed. In these works, fuzziness
is introduced at different levels. Common to all these proposals is
the support of fuzziness at the attribute level. This paper proposes
ďŹrst a rich set of data types devoted to model the different kinds
of imperfect information. The paper then proposes a formal
approach to implement these data types. The proposed approach
was implemented within a relational object database model but it
is generic enough to be incorporated into other database models.ou
COSMOS-7: Video-oriented MPEG-7 scheme for modelling and filtering of semantic content
MPEG-7 prescribes a format for semantic content models for multimedia to ensure interoperability across a multitude of platforms and application domains. However, the standard leaves it open as to how the models should be used and how their content should be filtered. Filtering is a technique used to retrieve only content relevant to user requirements, thereby reducing the necessary content-sifting effort of the user. This paper proposes an MPEG-7 scheme that can be deployed for semantic content modelling and filtering of digital video. The proposed scheme, COSMOS-7, produces rich and multi-faceted semantic content models and supports a content-based filtering approach that only analyses content relating directly to the preferred content requirements of the user
Conceptual design and implementation of the fuzzy semantic model
FSM is one of few database models that support
fuzziness, uncertainty and impreciseness of real-world at the class
deďŹnition level. FSM authorizes an entity to be partially member
of its class according to a given degree of membership that reďŹects
the level to which the entity veriďŹes the extent properties of this
class. This paper deals with the conceptual design of FSM and

Context for Ubiquitous Data Management
In response to the advance of ubiquitous computing technologies, we believe that for computer systems to be ubiquitous, they must be context-aware. In this paper, we address the impact of context-awareness on ubiquitous data management. To do this, we overview different characteristics of context in order to develop a clear understanding of context, as well as its implications and requirements for context-aware data management. References to recent research activities and applicable techniques are also provided

However, the standard does not specify how the content or the associated model may be filtered. This paper proposes an MPEG-7 scheme which can be deployed for digital video content modelling and filtering. The proposed scheme, COSMOS-7, produces rich and multi-faceted semantic content models and supports a content-based filtering approach that only analyses content relating directly to the preferred content requirements of the user. Monitoring land use changes using geo-information : possibilities, methods and adapted techniques
Monitoring land use with geographical databases is widely used in decision-making. This report presents the possibilities, methods and adapted techniques using geo-information in monitoring land use changes. The municipality of Soest was chosen as study area and three national land use databases, viz. Top10Vector, CBS land use statistics and LGN, were used. The restrictions of geo-information for monitoring land use changes are indicated. New methods and adapted techniques improve the monitoring result considerably. Providers of geo-information, however, should coordinate on update frequencies, semantic content and spatial resolution to allow better possibilities of monitoring land use by combining data sets
THE DEVELOPMENT OF A HOLISTIC EXPERT SYSTEM FOR INTEGRATED COASTAL ZONE MANAGEMENT
Coastal data and information comprise a massive and complex resource, which is vital
to the practice of Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM), an increasingly
important application. ICZM is just as complex, but uses the holistic paradigm to deal
with the sophistication. The application domain and its resource require a tool of
matching characteristics, which is facilitated by the current wide availability of high
performance computing.
An object-oriented expert system, COAMES, has been constructed to prove this
concept. The application of expert systems to ICZM in particular has been flagged as
a viable challenge and yet very few have taken it up. COAMES uses the Dempster-
Shafer theory of evidence to reason with uncertainty and importantly introduces the
power of ignorance and integration to model the holistic approach. In addition, object
orientation enables a modular approach, embodied in the inference engine -
knowledge base separation. Two case studies have been developed to test COAMES.
In both case studies, knowledge has been successfully used to drive data and actions
using metadata. Thus a holism of data, information and knowledge has been achieved.
Also, a technological holism has been proved through the effective classification of
landforms on the rapidly eroding Holderness coast. A holism across disciplines and
CZM institutions has been effected by intelligent metadata management of a Fal
Estuary dataset. Finally, the differing spatial and temporal scales that the two case
studies operate at implicitly demonstrate a holism of scale, though explicit means of
managing scale were suggested. In all cases the same knowledge structure was used to
effectively manage and disseminate coastal data, information and knowledge
A document management methodology based on similarity contents
The advent of the WWW and distributed information systems have made it possible to share documents between different users and organisations. However, this has created many problems related to the security, accessibility, right and most importantly the consistency of documents. It is important that the people involved in the documents management process have access to the most up-to-date version of documents, retrieve the correct documents and should be able to update the documents repository in such a way that his or her document are known to others. In this paper we propose a method for organising, storing and retrieving documents based on similarity contents. The method uses techniques based on information retrieval, document indexation and term extraction and indexing. This methodology is developed for the E-Cognos project which aims at developing tools for the management and sharing of documents in the construction domain
