    An enhanced classifier system for autonomous robot navigation in dynamic environments

    In many cases, a real robot application requires the navigation in dynamic environments. The navigation problem involves two main tasks: to avoid obstacles and to reach a goal. Generally, this problem could be faced considering reactions and sequences of actions. For solving the navigation problem a complete controller, including actions and reactions, is needed. Machine learning techniques has been applied to learn these controllers. Classifier Systems (CS) have proven their ability of continuos learning in these domains. However, CS have some problems in reactive systems. In this paper, a modified CS is proposed to overcome these problems. Two special mechanisms are included in the developed CS to allow the learning of both reactions and sequences of actions. The learning process has been divided in two main tasks: first, the discrimination between a predefined set of rules and second, the discovery of new rules to obtain a successful operation in dynamic environments. Different experiments have been carried out using a mini-robot Khepera to find a generalised solution. The results show the ability of the system to continuous learning and adaptation to new situations.Publicad

    Applying classifier systems to learn the reactions in mobile robots

    The navigation problem involves how to reach a goal avoiding obstacles in dynamic environments. This problem can be faced considering reactions and sequences of actions. Classifier systems (CSs) have proven their ability of continuous learning, however, they have some problems in reactive systems. A modified CS, namely a reactive classifier system (RCS), is proposed to overcome those problems. Two special mechanisms are included in the RCS: the non-existence of internal cycles inside the CS (no internal cycles) and the fusion of environmental message with the messages posted to the message list in the previous instant (generation list through fusion). These mechanisms allow the learning of both reactions and sequences of actions. This learning process involves two main tasks: first, discriminate between rules and, second, the discovery of new rules to obtain a successful operation in dynamic environments. DiVerent experiments have been carried out using a mini-robot Khepera to find a generalized solution.     Obstacle Avoidance Based on Stereo Vision Navigation System for Omni-directional Robot

    This paper addresses the problem of obstacle avoidance in mobile robot navigation systems. The navigation system is considered very important because the robot must be able to be controlled from its initial position to its destination without experiencing a collision. The robot must be able to avoid obstacles and arrive at its destination. Several previous studies have focused more on predetermined stationary obstacles. This has resulted in research results being difficult to apply in real environmental conditions, whereas in real conditions, obstacles can be stationary or moving caused by changes in the walking environment. The objective of this study is to address the robot’s navigation behaviors to avoid obstacles. In dealing with complex problems as previously described, a control system is designed using Neuro-Fuzzy so that the robot can avoid obstacles when the robot moves toward the destination. This paper uses ANFIS for obstacle avoidance control. The learning model used is offline learning. Mapping the input and output data is used in the initial step. Then the data is trained to produce a very small error. To support the movement of the robot so that it is more flexible and smoother in avoiding obstacles and can identify objects in real-time, a three wheels omnidirectional robot is used equipped with a stereo vision sensor. The contribution is to advance state of the art in obstacle avoidance for robot navigation systems by exploiting ANFIS with target-and-obstacles detection based on stereo vision sensors. This study tested the proposed control method by using 15 experiments with different obstacle setup positions. These scenarios were chosen to test the ability to avoid moving obstacles that may come from the front, the right, or the left of the robot. The robot moved to the left or right of the obstacles depending on the given Vy speed. After several tests with different obstacle positions, the robot managed to avoid the obstacle when the obstacle distance ranged from 173 – 150 cm with an average speed of Vy 274 mm/s. In the process of avoiding obstacles, the robot still calculates the direction in which the robot is facing the target until the target angle is 0

    Navigation and Control of Automated Guided Vehicle using Fuzzy Inference System and Neural Network Technique

    Automatic motion planning and navigation is the primary task of an Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) or mobile robot. All such navigation systems consist of a data collection system, a decision making system and a hardware control system. Artificial Intelligence based decision making systems have become increasingly more successful as they are capable of handling large complex calculations and have a good performance under unpredictable and imprecise environments. This research focuses on developing Fuzzy Logic and Neural Network based implementations for the navigation of an AGV by using heading angle and obstacle distances as inputs to generate the velocity and steering angle as output. The Gaussian, Triangular and Trapezoidal membership functions for the Fuzzy Inference System and the Feed forward back propagation were developed, modelled and simulated on MATLAB. The reserach presents an evaluation of the four different decision making systems and a study has been conducted to compare their performances. The hardware control for an AGV should be robust and precise. For practical implementation a prototype, that functions via DC servo motors and a gear systems, was constructed and installed on a commercial vehicle

    Fuzzy behaviors for mobile robot navigation: design, coordination and fusion

    AbstractThe implementation of complex behavior generation for artificial systems can be overcome by decomposing the global tasks into simpler, well-specified behaviors which are easier to design and can be tuned independently of each other. Robot behavior can be implemented as a set of fuzzy rules which mimic expert knowledge in specific tasks in order to model expert knowledge. These behaviors are included in the lowest level of a hybrid deliberative–reactive architecture which is aimed at an efficient integration of planning and reactive control. In this work, we briefly present the architecture and attention is focused on the design, coordination and fusion of the elementary behaviors. The design is based on regulatory control using fuzzy logic control and the coordination is defined by fuzzy metarules which define the context of applicability for each behavior. Regarding action fusion, two combination methods for fusing the preferences from each behavior are used in the experiments. In order to validate the system, several measures are also proposed, and thus the performance of the architecture and combination/arbitration algorithms have been demonstrated in both the simulated and the real world. The robot achieves every control objective and the trajectory is smooth in spite of the interaction between several behaviors, unexpected obstacles and the presence of noisy data. When the results of the experimentation from both methods are taken into account, the influence of the combination method appears to be of prime importance when attempting to achieve the best trade-off among the preferences of every behavior
