Social Media and the Digital Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere

    Get PDF
This article explores the question of how to understand social media following the Habermasian theory of the structural transformation of the public sphere. We argue for a return to political-economic fundamentals as the basis for analysing the public sphere and seek to establish a characteristic connection between digital-behavioural control and singularised audiences in the context of proprietary markets. In the digital constellation, it is less a matter of immobilising the citizen as a consumer but rather of their political activation – albeit in conditions under which commercial interests have primacy: privatisation without privatism.Peer Reviewe

Struktur Pesan Pada Interactive Voice Response (IVR)

    Get PDF
Interactive Voice Response (IVR) is an automated telephony system that interacts with callers, gathers information and routes calls to the appropriate recipient. An IVR system (IVRS) accepts a combination of voice telephone input and touch-tone keypad selection and provides appropriate responses in the form of voice, fax, callback, e-mail and perhaps other media. In recent years, many enterprises use IVR as their customer service media. Some problems arise as user problems, that is user have to remembering the too many choices; user does\u27nt achieve what they want (did not find the right choices); and the worst is tiring finding choices yet they have not find the human operator. This paper will observe the effect of message structuring for IVR customer satisfication. Human information processing (especially audio-based information) theory as well as menu organizing theory will be used as analysis fundamentals. Questionnaire will be distributed to IVR users to grab the real user experience

Modern industrial organization theory of media markets and competition policy implications

This paper outlines the modern industrial organization theory of media markets including competition policy implications. After recapturing fundamentals of industrial organization theory in a non-technical way, the state of the art of (i) modern platform economics, (ii) the economics of the so-called sharing economy, and (iii) the economics of data-based business models and data-driven markets is summarized in a detailed way and illustrated by modern media examples

Media and Social Responsibility: A Critical Perspective with Special Reference to Television

For healthy, meaningful, harmless, non-interfering and contributive functioning with maximized benefits, every media theory has reiterated that the intricacies of media practices should essentially be compatible with the social structure, cultural ethos and psycho-social ramifications of the land and the region. However, the practices currently adopted are more often borrowed or imitative of the extraneous, foreign and strange to be deciphered and accepted, especially in a nation like India. In such a context, mass media has constantly been lured into overstepping the fire line of informing, educating or entertaining the public. The habits and practices of media have time and again often resulted in sensationalizing, misleading, instigating or giving ulterior ideas leading to mistakes, triggering catastrophe or toppling governance established by law. The trend is also trickling down to the domestic media. The study looks into many such deviations in compatible practices, instances and case studies and their repercussions on society as well as on media itself. The study analyses and tries to provide for alternative healthy practices, at least put them into theory to begin with, with a hope that the stakeholders will introspect and imbibe the essence of a disciplined approach to the functioning of media. This study has its significance as more and more types of media are joining the train of existing media while the relationship between them and the people has got entangled and often conflicting to each other as the fundamentals of media functioning seems to have got blurred in this convergence era. The methodology is of theoretical type with Critical Study along with case studies and observations. The findings of the study reveal the relationship between the commercial aspects of media, theoretical model, ethical lines and the psycho-social aberrations resulting out of wrongly treaded paths by the media. The inferences concentrate on treating the culture of mass media with innovative penicillin. The conclusions of the study are derived purely for the intentions of bridging the gap of understanding between the common masses and the specialized sector called mass communicatio

The Potential of Service-Learning: Media Advocacy as Community Organizing with La Casa Guadalupana

    Get PDF
For 16 weeks in a course on community organizing, I applied theory in practice through service-learning to maximize the capacity of La Casa Guadalupana, a nonprofit organization located in Southwest Detroit, Michigan, United States. Throughout the course, we learned the principles and fundamentals of service-learning and its implications in community organizing to achieve public health. The class was divided into smaller groups. Each group was assigned a specific project such as developing social media platforms, media production, health care workshops, tutoring, advocacy, and fundraising. My project was focused on media production, creating an echo in the community to attract contributors, community members, and elected public officials. All groups were sharing a common interest and we all worked together toward a common goal, empowering La Casa Guadalupana and its mission in improve the conditions of life of the Hispanic community members in Southwest Detroit. Education is the key element that is embedded in the core of its mission to enhance socioeconomic opportunities for the Hispanic community members

A Theory of the Onset of Currency Attacks

The swiftness and devastating impact of recent financial crises have taken many market participants by surprise, and pose challenges for economists seeking a theory of the onset of a crisis. We propose such a theory based on two features. The actions of diverse economic actors which undermine the currency are mutually reinforcing, while the fragmented nature of the media create small disparities in their information. In such circumstances, the beliefs of market participants can be tracked in the same way as the economic fundamentals, and an attack is triggered when the economic fundamentals deteriorate sufficiently to fall below the minimum level of market confidence necessary to support the currency. We give a characterization of such a minimum level of confidence

A Consideration on Physics of Saturated-UnsaturatedGroundwater Motion

The purposes of this paper are primarily to research on behavior of groundwater flow in saturated and unsaturated zone, and to present the fundamentals of the theory of groundwater flow. This paper discusses the physics of the saturated-unsaturated groundwater motion. Evaluations confirm the early belief that Darcy's law is of the nature of statistical result giving the empirical equivalent of Navier-Stokes equations. The governing equation of saturated-unsaturated flow in porous media is derived from the law of mass conservation and from the Darcy's law and Richard's equation of motion and is compared with the Klute's diffusion equation which has been widely used in the analysis of unsaturated flow. As a result; it is concluded that the governing equation has the advantage that can be applied for the whole flow region. Typical boundary conditions are enumerated

Exegesis of Sect. III.B from “Fundamentals of the Mechanics of Continua” by E. Hellinger

This is our third and last exegetic essay on the fundamental review article DIE ALLGEMEINEN ANSÄTZE DER MECHANIK DER KONTINUA in the Encyklopädie der mathematischen Wissenschaften mit Einschluss ihrer Anwendungen, Bd. IV-4, Hft. 5 (1913) by Ernst Hellinger which contains the translation and the commentary of the remaining text starting from p. 663. The six subsections, No. 9–15, deal with the applications of the previously developed conceptual tools to formulate: an effective theory of elasticity, the dynamics of ideal fluids, models for internal friction and elastic hysteresis, a theory of capillarity, optics, the fundamental equations of electrodynamics, an introduction of the thermodynamical foundations and the relationship between the theory of continua and the theory of relativity. Hellinger refers to relevant literature while consolidating in an effective way the contemporary knowledge in 1913. Considering notational differences as being irrelevant for the characterization of the presented scientific content, Hellinger's article shows that an effective compendium of a large part of the insights given in Truesdell and Toupin and Truesdell and Noll has already been available in 1913. We include in this paper an assessment of the different roles played by pioneers, who are innovating their scientific discipline, and by erudite scholars whose role consists in re-ordering existent knowledge and advertising to a wider audience the most important technical results already obtained in a given discipline
